Lorenzo pointed to the empty seat at the back of the classroom. âElysia, thatâs the only seat available. I know itâs a bit far back, but it shouldnât affect your learning too much. How about you give it a shot? We can rearrange the seats after midterms.â
The class was shocked. What the hell of this kind of tone? Lorenzo, the head of the STEM track, is known for being distant. How could he greet a young girl like that and go out of his way to make her feel welcome âCould it be that she has some sort of connection? Someone powerful enough to make Lorenzo bend his own rules? If thatâs true, then everything starts to make sense.
âRumor has it she barely graduated from elementary school and struggles with reading. Sheâs supposed to be in Grade 7 Class 6, but here she is in Grade 12, Class 1. It would be impossible without some kind of support.
After some thought, the class reached a surprising, unanimous conclusionâElysia must know someone important. Believing they had uncovered her secret, they now looked at her with a hint of disdain.
Milton School might be prestigious, but it strictly enforced discipline and placed a high value on academic achievement. From middle school to high school, each grade had only six classes, numbered 1 to 6, with academic performance generally decreasing as the class number increased.
As top performers from the entrance exams, they carried an air of superiority. From their perspective, the lowerâranked classes were beneath them, especially Class 6, which was filled with underachievers.
After all, they worked incredibly hard to earn their spot in Class But now, Elysia seemed to just waltze in without any effort, and they were not happy about it.
But they didnât have the guts to voice their discontent openly, so they could only express their anger and disdain through sideways glances.
Elysia noticed their stares but didnât care at all. She walked straight to her seat. Once she sat down, Walden collected himself and got back to the lesson.
Looking at the textbook in front of her, Elysia felt a twinge of regret about coming to schoolâit was so boring. If she had known, she wouldnât have gone just to spite Emma.
Emmaâs heart was filled with joy. âEver since Elysia came back, Ive been pushed around. But today, I finally scored a big win Oh Elysia, so what if youâre pretty? So what if Dad spoils you? A Milton School, what really counts is your grades. Youâre in Grade 7 Class 8 now, and trust me, people are only going to look down on you more.
Whoâs even going to remember that youâre a Rosewood And if they do, itâll likely be with a touch of contt mpt.
When the bell rang. Emma and Natalie planned to sneak over the middle school section to see Elysin, hot to check on her, burtoâkickher while she was down.

âYou said your sister doesnât care about her studies, didnât finish elementary school, and only got into Grade 7, Class 6. because of family connections, right?â Cindy said.
âYeah, she didnât finish elementary school, and she definitely got in through family connections. If she had taken the entrance exam, she probably wouldnât have gotten into our school,â Emma replied, raising her voice as if worried the others wouldnât hear her.
Cindy pushed further. âThen why is she in Grade 12, Class 1 now Emmaâs smile froze. âWhat did you say?â she asked, barely believing it.
âI said, why is she in Grade 12, Class 1?â
âAre you sure the person you saw is my sister?â
âYour sisterâs name is Elysia, right?â
Emma nodded.
âThen itâs true. Everyoneâs talking about a new transfer student in Class I who was personally brought in by Lorenzo, and her name is Elysia. I just went to see her, and sheâs... Cindy looked Emma up and down before finishing, âprettier than you.â
Instantly, Ernma was speechlessâthat was a hard hit.
Natalie fumed and snapped, âAnd how attractive are you, Cindy What gives you the right to talk about our Emma? Honestly, youâre not even worthy of carrying her shoes.â
âIâm not, but I guess you are,â Cindy rolled her eyes and pushed past Natalie.
Natalie was about to say more, but then Emmaâs soft voice interrupted. âJust let it go, Natalie. Donât waste your time on her.â
âYouâre too nice, Emma. She talked down about you, and you just let it slide. If I were in your shoes, I couldnât handle that Natalie said with a hint of frustration.
WHE Emma wore faint smile, but it quickly faded, replaced by worry âI want to go to Class 1 and check on Elysia. She didnât tell us she transferred to senior year. Can she handle the pressure? Besides, how can she just transfer to senior year like that?â
Emmaâs words were smooth, as if she was saying everything and nothing at once. That last line, in particular, left a lot of room for interpretation.
Elysiaâs transfer to senior year could only happen in two ways: by taking an exam or pulling some strings. The exam option was unlikely, because it was impossible that someone who barely finished elementary school could pass the exams needed to jump to senior year and get into Class 1.
So that only left one optionâconnections. Elysia glanced over but couldnât be bothered to respond.
Natalie was fuming. âWhatâs with her attitude? She totally ignores us. Emma, you care about her this much. Does she even know how to act like a sister? Maybe we should just forget about ber.â
Emma shook her head, putting on a fake hurt expression. âNatalie, please donât be upset. No matter what, sheâs still my sister. I canât just stand by and watch her make more bad choices.
Natalie got more resentful toward Elysia. Just as she was about to comfort Emma, a cold male voice came from behind them.
âEmma, what are you doing here?â
