Maybe not the Luna
I was still fuming, but I was not sure who I was mad atâmyself, Baxter, or that good-for-nothing mate of mine. Luckily, the wound wasn't so bad; the coven had me fixed up in minutes. I was muttering to myself as I left when I bumped into Sean.
"Hey Silverstone, remember me? I'm the guy you got a milkshake with," he said with an excited grin.
"oh hey Sean, sorry I just bumped into you. I was super distracted."
"what happened"
"Remember that guy I said beat you to the punch? We had a huge blow-up fight, and he blames me for everything."
"There is always one way to get back at him."
"And what is that"
"moving on with a nice guy like me. Don't worry; you are not taking advantage of my good nature. I am just that nice of a guy." I laughed. He was silly in a way that I really needed at the moment.
"I will not be taking advantage of you."
"Are you sure there are some versions that may be fun"
"There will be no fun, but you can accompany me to my pity party if you choose."
"I'm all in for a party," he wrapped an arm around my shoulders and led the way out. "now, is this an in our pjs eating ice cream pity party."
"no, I'm more of a burger and fries pity party kind of girl."
"To the diner." He led the way to his car, and we both got in. I can always come back from my car later. Esme kept calling me, but I ignored it. I figured she wanted McCoy and me to hold hands and discuss working through our issues, but I need time to get my head straight before joining the cumbias.
"so what kind of burger are you thinking about," Sean asked, pulling up to the diner. "the grosser, the better."
"gross as in messy or as in weird ingredients because I don't know if we can be friends if you put something weird like peanut butter on a cheeseburger," I gaged and laughed
"I meant greasy," and we entered the diner. All eyes were on us as we sat down. I felt uncomfortable at first, but I figured they knew at least who I was. Sean ignored it completely. At least, I assumed he did since he carried on as if no one was watching. The conversation was easy with Sean. He was a teacher, and I was a teacher. He was a witch, and I was a witch. He even understood the pressure from my family when I decided I didn't want to use my power to convict the bad guys the hunter brought in. I was at ease with him in a way I hadn't felt since I was at Mardovo's. Maybe I was the problem of not working as closely with the other witches.
"I think I might be a fool," I said, laughing at his recent reference to my favorite witch, Sara, from the council meeting. I think he said that her puffy poodle hair was actually a tupay."and why on earth are you a fool."
"Because I was drawing into the wolves of the community, I thought that they were my friends because since I didn't become an interrogator, the witch community hasn't been kind to me, but maybe I wasn't looking deep enough. I let the loud descent cloud my judgment."
"wow, English teacher, much," I laughed again. "I get it, but the thing is that anger is always louder than love, but love lasts longer. Your community loves you because the goddess loves all her children."
"quoting the goddess at me low blow."
Excuse me," the waitress said to me
"yes." I turned to her, seeing the fear in her gaze
"I need to speak with you quickly if I can in private." The waitress glanced at Sean
"He is a witch. He knows about wolves," I said, thinking that would be the end of it
"I understand, and I don't want to disrespect him, but the alpha wanted this conveyed to you privately." I nodded and started to rise
" I will be right back. This is just pack business." he nodded and ate another fry. I followed the girl to the kitchen and out the back door.
"I'm sorry, humans are working in the kitchen, and they can't hear stuff like this," she said with a glance at the woods.
"I get it, so what is the message" I demanded, glancing at the woods to her shifty looks were freaking me out.
"Alpha wanted someone to warn you that the beta lost control of his wolf tonight, and they believe he is coming for you." I took a step back and glanced at the woods again.
"What!"
"Alpha said that the Luna tried to call you."
"she did, but I..." There was a step in the woods behind me, and I knew it wasn't natural. "Run," I gasped, and the girl did not hesitate. She sprinted to the door with me on her tail, but it was locked. We slammed into the door, banging on it, hoping to be let in. but I knew it would be too late. I knew even before I felt the sharp pain of teeth clamping down on my hip, pulling me to the ground. I knew I was dead before I felt those same teeth clamp down on my neck.
