Chapter 42

McCoy (11)

Maybe not the Luna

I grabbed the letter on the way out of his office. He was worried about his mate, which was understandable since she was a human luna, so I needed to pick up the slack while he fell apart. I grabbed a suit and a sealable bag, sliding the letter into the bag before getting into the car and heading for the police station. When I walked in, one of the wolves who works here greeted me.

"what can I do for you, Beta Fields?" he asks, meeting me at the front desk.

"Yes, I have questions about the technology you can access through the department to analyze a letter." I pulled out the letter the rouges left.

"What type of analysis are you thinking?" he asked, taking the letter and reading it without breaking the seal.

"throw everything that you can at it. We believe the rouges are threatening the alphas, mate." he nodded and took the letter. I walked out and mind-linked the tracker that found the letter, wanting the exact location of its discovery. I hoped it would be the main entrance because some businesses nearby should have security cameras. Maybe I can get lucky and tidy this up neatly before Luna finds out.

I headed to the pack house to review our survey first since they left the note at the front gate. I also stopped at the local shops on the way in and asked for their tapes from yesterday. This was tedious work. I wanted to pawn it off on someone else. Still, I knew I would kick myself if someone missed something. I knew that I wouldn't. so I sat and stared at the screen, making notes with descriptions of every person who passed by our cameras and then comparing them to local store cameras. I was going to bang my head against the wall. When I needed a break from watching the silent video, I paused it. I tried matching descriptions with identities using the pack database. I figured the best way to start was to figure out who didn't belong.

But then I get a frantic mind link from my brother and Baxter saying that Esme has been attacked and that Roe was wounded. I left my post immediately and raced to the alpha's office, where he said he was taking them.

"I am fine; it was Roe who got hurt." I heard Esme's voice on the other side of the door before it opened, revealing the alpha with his arms protectively wrapped around Esme. Roe walked in with Darrel holding something to her back. Max carried papers, and my brother followed discreetly behind the group like he wasn't sure he should be there. I pulled out a chair for Roe to sit on. That way, it was easier for us to treat her wounds.

"what happened" I breathed when I saw the blood on what I now recognize as my brother's hoodie.

"That is exactly what I would like to know," Baxter growled, taking a seat at his desk and pulling Esme into his lap despite her protests.

"Taylor," I called his name, making his eyes widen in alarm. This was probably because I was doing everything possible to control my wolf. Tell us what happened."

"I heard the alert that the Luna might be in danger, so I followed them out of the building. Ms. Silverstone and Ms. Hansley were walking out, and a rouge jumped from the top of the building. Luckily, Ms. Silverstone noticed it and pushed Ms. Hansley out of the way, but she unfortunately got clipped by the blade on her shoulder. My friend and I then attacked the guy, but with only two of us and also trying to keep ourselves in between the teacher and the attacker, he ran off. We stayed with the Luna to protect her and notified the alpha immediately about the attack. Pack warriors and trackers came quickly after that to follow the trail," Taylor summarized.

"what were you doing? Let the Luna wander around without coverage," I demanded, looking at Roe. She should have understood the danger of a threat like that, and she still let her just get attacked.

"how was I supposed to know, and in case you didn't realize, I did protect her? Roe yelled back at me. "The mind link is Roe. We sent out an alert about the danger."

"I AM NOT A WOLF," she was standing in my face, completely ignoring Darrel's protest when she walked away from him.

"That is the problem," I responded.

"I am done," Roe responded. "Esme, I am glad you are okay, but I am leaving and going to my coven to be healed properly; I will see you and Darrel at work. Baxter, I will see you at our next meeting."

"wait, what does that mean?" Baxter asked

"that means I will not be here unless I am needed until the month is up, and he can go through with the rejection of the bond. I am done being bullied and judged for what I am. I am done with the mix signals, so I am removing myself from the equation." Roe walked out and slammed the door. All of the faces in the room turned to me. But I stood there and made no move to chase her. I'm not sure my legs would support me if I did move.
