Chapter 40

Monroe (10)

Maybe not the Luna

"Miss Silverstone," Taylor said, stopping me on my way out the door. "are you okay?"

"I'm good." I opened the door, ready to run to my car. "see you at school tomorrow."

I was so stupid. I thought that we were moving towards getting along, but no, he still has the same predisposition as before. I worked all night on the potions for Esme since I walked out before confirming that she would need them. I just wanted to be prepared for the next morning if she was planning on becoming a wolf.

"Esme," I knocked on her office door. She was working hard on the computer, filling out forms.

"that was an interesting conversation last night," she said without looking up.

"What did you decide," I asked back

"Why do I need to change?" Her hands were placed on her desk, and her eyes slid to me. They were a beautiful brown, and when they were tearing up, the green in them was brighter.

"It seems to be the duty of humans to change to be with members of the fae. I don't know why, but you are the only one who can change. The rest of us are stuck as we are, unmoving, while humans can mold themselves into whatever they need to be." I closed the door and pulled the chair around to her side.

"I have been walking around all day looking at people and wondering if this person is human or, or..." A grunt left her mouth before her head fell to the table. "something else."

"This town has a large population of something else." I placed my hand on her arm, rubbing small circles in what I hoped was comfort.

"Why can't we just stay as we are—him, a wolf, and me, a human?" She looked at me with wide eyes, and a spike of her fear hit my heart.

"There are wolves that respect their mate and think they can leave them as human forever."

"Think"

"Correct, think," I said with a small smile. I have seen it go three ways with that decision. One is that they eventually reject the bond, and it becomes too hard to resist the urge or give up on having children.

"no children." her head was shaking in disbelieve

"They are always stillborn because their parents are different species." My gaze left her eyes. "Two, the wolf snaps and marks the human against their will. Forcing a change is dangerous and normally results in the human dying unprepared during the transition. The final one is that the wolf normally loses their mind."

"All of those options don't seem good," she mumbled as her head fell on her arm.

"no, they really aren't." I stood up to leave, assuming she needed time to think, but paused by the door. "if you want my advice, which you didn't ask for, I'm offering anyway. Call up Baxter and say you will start training, but you want your own room instead of moving in with him. Go to the omega training and meet people besides the high-ranking members of the pack. Don't tell anyone who you are mated to so you can decide if you want to be a part of this pack. At the month's end, decide whether you want to go through the change."

"why not tell anyone who I am mated to?"

"so you can figure out how you fit with the pack instead of everyone treating you like a queen."

"Will you do it with me?" I grumbled, wishing I had thought she would ask me so I could have come up with an excuse not to.

"Yes," I relented. I will stay with you through this month and, if you choose, through the shift. But after that, you are on your own."

I taught through the day in a bit of a blur, and on my way to the car, I was stealing myself for a hit to my ego that I would get when I came to the pack with a bag to stay. He would think I was trying to get closer to him, the foolish dog. I was comparing McCoy's behaviors to those of a dog and found him losing the comparison when I slammed into a wall of flesh.

"whoa there," it was Sean.
