Chapter 122

I Refuse to Divorce!

There was a hint of exhaustion on his dashing face and a subtle

impatience in his tone.

“I thought Ava told you that I might not be able to come tonight because

I've got a lot of meetings at work! What are you still doing here?”

He was probably hungry too because he sat down and started to eat.

Zoe stared at him quietly. It had been almost two minutes since he had

come to the restaurant, but he hadn't looked her in the eye once even

though he was talking to her. That told her just how irritated he was.

Perhaps he was angry that she was behaving immaturely.

He had a lot on his plate, as it were, and yet she was pestering him

with something as trivial as an anniversary.

Zoe lowered her head and touched her ear with her delicate fingers.

She proceeded to grumble the way an ordinary elegant lady would to

her husband. There wasn't even a trace of sadness in her tone. She

could even put on a faint smile while she spoke, “Come on, it's a

celebration of our anniversary! I was thinking about leaving you if you

hadn't shown up.”

Then, she said gently, “I'm sorry to have disturbed your busy schedule,

Mason.”

He raised his eyes and looked at her. She looked so beautiful and

graceful underneath the crystal chandelier.

What a refreshing sight.

Then, his mind traveled to the moments he spent in the hospital. The

stinging smell of disinfectant and the depressing odor of various

medicines filled the air. Carly would cry and grumble at him every single

day. On top of that, Lilith would look deathly sick and try to gain his

favor meticulously.

Then, he relaxed a little and soothed Zoe. “Why would you say that?

I'm the one who didn’t keep my promise because of work!”

Realizing that his mood was getting better, she smiled sweetly and said

something she had been wanting the say the whole night.

“I want to introduce someone important to you this Saturday, Mason.

Can you spare some time for it? I know Saturday is your day off. Take a

break with me.” Her tone was both demure and mischievous.

Holding a glass of wine, he went over his options. This Saturday was

special. He promised Lilith he'd attend the party with her. It was Aiden’s

private party and it meant the world to her. The fact was Lilith didn’t

have long to live and he wanted to do everything he could to fulfill her

wishes.

Time wasn't on his side and yet he had to soothe his wife.

So, he leaned over, pinched her perky cheeks, and said, “What are the

odds? There's a shareholder meeting this Saturday. As the CEO, I have

to attend it. Can we do it some other day?”

Zoe wanted to maintain a graceful attitude, but it was very challenging.

Gripping the hem of her skirt underneath the table, it took her immense

willpower to keep a lid on her emotions.

Eventually, she flashed him a faint smile. “That friend of mine is only

going to come here once. There won't be another chance in the future!

Seriously. What are the odds?"

Leaning closer, he kissed her and spoke tenderly, “I'm sorry about it,

Zoe. What can I do to make it up to you?"

She let him kiss her and wore a smile on her face, but she couldn't

control her cheeks, which were trembling slightly.

This was it. She had truly given up on him. There was no coming back

from this.

Fighting back her tears, she raised her hand and touched his dashing

face. Her fingers lingered as if this was the last time she would touch

him. Then, she murmured, “I don’t need anything, Mason. Being your

wife is the best thing that has happened to me.”

Mason was a perceptive man. He could feel that there was something

off with Zoe. It was likely that she had found out something, but she

wasn't going to confront him about it. Instead, she chose to feign

ignorance.

He decided to just go along with it.

He had confessed a lot to her a few days ago. Those words, akin to

vows, had gone with the wind.

After that, he left the restaurant in a hurry.

Zoe sat there quietly for a long time. Then, she smiled bitterly and

became lost in thought.

From the very beginning, she was the only one who thought they'd

learn to love each other. It turned out he didn’t mean it at all when he

said he wanted to start over. She was the only one foolish enough to

take it seriously.

It was a good thing that she hadn't given in to him completely.

That was the end of it tonight. She spoke softly, “Bill, please!”
