Chapter 120
I Refuse to Divorce!
Mason didn't love Lilith, but he felt like he owed her. He knew he
promised Zoe that he wouldn't meet up with her again. In fact, he could
soon have a loving wife and an adorable baby if he'd just man up and
leave Lilith to Ava and the medical personnel. He didn't have to risk Zoe
finding out about this.
However, Zoe wasn't all that important to him when all was said and
done.
He wanted to conquer and own her, but he knew he didn't love her.
Should she find out about this someday, the worst thing that could
happen would be her crying and feeling disheartened. Then, their
relationship would revert to its former state.
He could live with that.
As he analyzed his feelings for her, he also weighed the pros and cons.
At last, he snuffed out this cigar and made a call to Lilith's doctor.
âI'll be right over!â
He hung up the phone, but he wasnât in a hurry to leave. He searched
for a picture in his phone's photo album. It was a picture of Zoe while
she was sleeping. He took his time, appreciating the picture in silence.
The bedroom was dark when he returned. He surmised that Zoe was
sleeping.
Mason sat by the bed and took in the view of her serene face.
Reaching out, he touched her gently and found that her face was
slightly warm. It was probably because she had been asleep for some
time.
Much time had passed when he decided to leave quietly. Zoe woke up
and said in a slightly husky voice, âAre you going out again, Mason?"
His hands were still touching her face.
âYeah,â he said tenderly, âThere's an emergency at work.â
Lying her face down on the white pillow, she stared at him quietly,
dismayed. He leaned over and gave her a peck, âIt's going to be over
soon! I'll spend more time with you after that.â
She forced a smile.
Perhaps it was her supple skin, but he couldn't resist kissing her again.
Then, he spoke sweetly to her. Under normal circumstances, she
would've been blushing and her heart would surely pound like crazy.
However, all she felt now was how pathetic it all was right now.
Zoe didnât want to do this, but she needed to give herself an answer.
She grabbed his arm when he was about to leave. Sitting on the bed,
she wrapped her arms around his waist and murmured to him that she
didnât want him to leave.
His heart softened a bit and he patted her. âWhy are you this clingy
tonight? Didn't you have enough sex earlier?â
Pressing herself against his tummy, she spoke in a hoarse voice, âIt's
our anniversary the day after tomorrow. Let's grab a meal together,
Mason.â
âIs that what it's all about?â He burst into laughter and said, âSure thing.
You call the shots, Zoe."
She raised her head and smiled sweetly, âI'm going to use the bank
card you gave me and make a reservation at the most expensive
restaurant in the city.â
At that moment, his phone rang. He knew it was a call from the
hospital. Leaning in, he pecked her on her cheeks and left in a hurry.
He marched downstairs and hopped into the car. Just as he was about
to start the engine, he stopped in his tracks all of a sudden.
The invitation was in his coatâs pocket.
Leaning over, he took the coat from the passenger seat and felt in its
pocket. The invitation was still there. Aiden had given this invitation to
Lilith for his private party and he had promised her he'd go with her.
It was a private party. That meant no reporters would be there. Zoe
probably wouldn't find out about it, he thought to himself.
Still, he took out a cigarette and lit it up, feeling irritated.
After Mason left, Zoe rose from the bed and wandered to the balcony,
feeling the gentle breeze on her face.
How pathetic.
If she was being honest with herself, she took a gamble earlier. She
gambled on him loving her for real and that he'd notice something was
amiss with her. Alas, he didn't...
He didn't notice that she was out of sorts, not even a little. All he cared
about was Lilith.
It was plain as day that she wasn't the lady he loved.
