Chapter 173
Isaac
Isaacâs sudden arrogance to talk down to him like a subordinate struck Mazelan like a lightning bolt. Isaac continued as he lit his cigarette.
âIâll take control from here. You can go back and work at your old job. Iâm sure there are plenty of pretty ladies lined up to meet you, now that youâve been on broadcast. Why donât you take one and get married?â
âWhat do you mean go back?!â
âThe Emperor gave me the honour of resolving this incident, so youâll be referring to me as your superior. Iâll take care of this place. You should go, since youâll just get in the way.â
Just when Mazelan was about to let hell loose, Colins stepped in.
âAh. I apologise, but we canât have that. You must stay until the job is done.â
âWho is this?â
Mazelan glared at Colins, annoyed.
âI am Colins from Central. I have been ordered by the Emperor to assist Lord Isaac.â
ââ¦â
Mazelan almost began berating Colins for his insolence, but he remained silent because of the line of cameras ahead of him. Isaac took a breath of his cigarette and spoke to Colins.
âOi.â
âYes?â
âWho is the highest authority here?â
â⦠Thatâll be you, Lord Isaac.â
âSo why is someone who knows that telling me otherwise?â
â⦠Itâll be troublesome if you continue acting like that.â
âTroublesome? Haha. So youâve grown a spine since then, have you?â
âYou canât treat me like you did in the past.â
Colins didnât hide his disdain as he glared back.
âAh. Is that so? Whoâs more important between you and me? Huh? Whose side do you think theyâll take if I declare youâre the reason I donât want to cooperate anymore?â
ââ¦â
âStand up straight!â
Isaac kicked Colins in the stomach, but he stood back up straight immediately.
âHave you lost your senses just because youâre doing some bigshot job?â
âNo sir.â
âYour answer doesnât seem to match your face. You think the hierarchy will disappear just because youâve joined Central? Oi, you thereâturn off the camera. Children arenât allowed to see whatâs coming.â
The broadcast staff were confused when Isaac gave them the order. Just what was Central? It was an organisation with absolute power, standing at the pinnacle of all government bodies.
Even the lowest members of Central were treated like VIPs when deployed elsewhere, yet Isaac didnât hesitate to assault one, even demanding them to turn off the broadcast.
âIâm sorry!â
âLet me go. Now!â
Remembering the old days, Colins grabbed Isaacâs waist in a panic. He was closest to Isaac, and thus the witness most familiar with how he cared for nothing when he went mad. And he dared to stand up against Isaac when he was already furious.
âHng⦠Why donât you stop now?â
Mazelan spoke as he rubbed his temples, watching Isaac smack the back of Colinsâ head repeatedly.
âWhat do you mean stop? In fact, you should be busy packing to go home.â
âWhat do you mean, go home! The Emperor may have designated you as the highest authority, but I too was ordered by the Emperor to stabilise the prices of goods in Milros County!â
Isaac let out a deep sigh and smacked Colins one more time.
âLet me go, dumbass.â
âYes!â
Colins dodged Isaac nimbly and withdrew.
âTsk. Watch where you stand.â
âI will.â
Cold sweat dripped down Colinâs back as he replied, avoiding Isaacâs cold stare.
âJust because youâre a part of Central doesnât mean those days where you followed me around back in Campus never happened, idiot.â
âIâll remember.â
â⦠Is that the setting?â
Mazelan whispered to Isaac to avoid the cameras from hearing him. Isaac smirked and nodded ever so slightly.
âSo. Are you really not leaving?â
âOf course!â
Mazelan gave no impression of changing his mind. Isaac sighed.
âHa, I put so much thought into giving you a way out, and you do thisâ¦â
âWhat are you on about?â
âYouâll find out soon. We should head to somewhere quiet.â
â⦠Sure. Follow me. Thereâs a room we use for meetings.â
âAh. You guys arenât allowed. Only officials are allowed in this meeting. You guys stand by and wait for the result.â
Isaac prevented the broadcast staff. The staff remembered vividly of how Isaac assaulted a Central agent just moments ago and obeyed him.
â⦠What bullshit is this!â
A table sat in the middle of the briefing room Mazelan led him too. Isaac, Mazelan, Rivelia, Kunette, Reisha, and Rizzly sat, surrounded by a circle of Strategy agents.
Just as Mazelan was questioning the strange behaviour of the Strategy agents, Colins revealed the Queenâs plan. Mazelan naturally exploded.
âDonât shout at me. I only found out moments ago too.â
Isaac raised both his hands in innocence. Mazelan turned to Colins and the Strategy agents instead.
â⦠They are all Invaders?â
âYeap. I see the Emperor didnât tell you anything.â
âOf course! How dare the Invaders take over the bodies of Strategy agents! What about those who had their bodies taken?!â
âWho knows?â
ââYouâve practically killed them! No, itâs much worse than that!â
Mazelan slammed the table. The Strategy agents silently pulled out their guns from under their clothes. Rivelia, Reisha, and Rizzly readied themselves, ready to pounce at a momentâs notice.
Watching the mood turn south so quickly, Isaac spoke with an annoyed look.
âCalm down. Nothing will change no matter how mad you get.â
âDo you think this is something I can be calm about?! Rivelia, why are you staying so silent?!â
Mazelan shouted. Rivelia spoke with a pained look.
âThey invoked the First Contract.â
â⦠Shit. Your despicable nature puts demons to shame! It wonât go as you planned. Iâm going to report this immediately! Where are the Inspectors? I received a report saying that they came here too! Did you kill them already?â
Mazelanâs furious belching reminded Isaac.
âOh yeah, where are those three?â
âI donât know, but Three-eyed despises locations filled with humans. Iâm sure he locked himself somewhere quiet and is enjoying the scene.â
Colins replied as he dug into his ears, annoyed. Mazelan was left in shock, standing in the room with despair on his face.
âThe head of Inspectors is a Three-eyed?â
Mazelan knew well just how much the Three-eyed hated humans. No amount of begging would be able to enlist their help. No, the chance to even meet them was non-existent.
âWhat, was the Inspectors your final ray of hope? Should I prepare you a Communicator if youâre so sad?â
Mazelan was just about to lose himself and attack Colins himself when Isaac stopped him.
âStop. Donât taunt him needlessly. And you calm down too, sunbaenim. The Queen has already taken full control of the communications. There is no way to reveal this news to the outside.â
Mazelan was left silent for a moment. His expression then changed to one of scheming. Isaac sighed and spoke.
âIf youâre planning on using the media, I suggest you give up. Do you plan on revealing the existence of Invaders?â
ââ¦â
Mazelan glared at Isaac, his teeth clenched. He then collapsed into his seat weakly, wrapping his head with his hands.
âWhat are you planning? Just what are you scheming, killing all of Strategyâs combat agents and taking over their bodies?â
âFiguring that out wonât help your headache. Iâm still pondering how far-fetched this was.â
Both Colins and Strategy agents were noticeably shaken by Isaacâs words.
âWhat do you mean, pondering?â
Colins argued, and Isaac shrugged as he answered.
âIâm pondering if thereâs a peaceful way to resolve this issue.â
Not only Colins and the Strategy agentsâbut even Mazelan, Rivelia, and the three non-humans frowned like they had heard
âHey now, you guys of all people shouldnât react like that.â
Isaac spoke out begrudgingly, seemingly almost hurt. Everyone coughed dryly and avoided Isaacâs gaze.
âEveryone has actions and words that fit them. But what you just said before gave me goosebumps.â
Isaac grumbled at Mazelanâs criticism.
âThatâs harsh. Iâm actually trying pretty hard here.â
Colins spoke his dissatisfaction to Isaac.
âI donât understand. Why are you taking their side?â
Isaac turned to see the faces of the other Strategy agents. They all seemed to share Colinsâ exact thoughts. Isaac took a puff of his cigarette and spoke.
âItâs me who doesnât understand you. Just why are you guys in such a hurry? Time is on your side anyway.â
Colinsâ face twisted as he spoke.
âHow long have you been in this world?â
âMe? Letâs see⦠Is it short of 10 years? Iâve been here for a long time.â
âKuk! Youâre talking about time when youâve only been here for 10 years? Our youngest member has been in this world for almost 40 years. For me, Iâve been here for a hundred. We donât plan on waiting anymore.â
Isaac apathetically exhaled through his mouth and commented.
âYouâre going to complain after living for that amount of time after telling me how nice itâll be to live forever?â
ââ¦â
Neither Colins nor the agents had an answer to Isaacâs comment.
âBut I now understand why you have to put everything on the line for this job.â
Their youngest member was 40 years. As the saying went, mountains and rivers change after 10 years. Multiples of that were more than enough to change a manâs thoughts and beliefs. Other voices must have been speaking up within the Independence Army at this point.
How long could an organisation stay devoted to a single goal? Even 10 years was too many. At this point, other opinions would diverge so far that they couldnât just be ignored.
That was why they were pushing this so hard. If more time passed, their original goal would be left in the dust, and everyone would move for their own profit. That was human instinctâselfishness.
But they were too rushed. You couldnât even call this a plan since its success or failure hinged on the non-humansâ decisions. Letâs say, it did work out. How long would that last? From the non-humanâs perspective, both humans from this world and the other were the same.
â⦠Do you think we will fail?â
âWhether you succeed or not is none of my business.â
Colins bit his lip, deep in thought. Isaac watched him apathetically as he continued to smoke. Colins sighed, as if heâd come to a decision.
âI guess thereâs no choice. Lord Isaacâ¦â
Suddenly, there was a ruckus outside. Colins frowned and looked at one of the agents. The agent immediately rushed to open the door to find out whatâs happening. But as soon as the door opened, the employees of the Department of Supplies whoâd come with Mazelan rushed in.
âThereâs been a case of infection!â
