Chapter 842
The Unfaithful Mr. Scott
Henry glanced at the door. Melanie said, âI was worried she would disturb your rest, so I asked Yvonne to take her out to play.â
Henry was disappointed. âI see. Whatâs her name?â
After chatting with Henry in the ward for a while, Melanie got up to leave. She noticed that Henry had glanced at Eugene several times as he spoke, but Melanie pretended not to notice.
Before she left, Henry handed her an envelope with some money and said, âThis is a little allowance for your daughter. As I said before, even if the baby isnât Eugeneâs, sheâs still my granddaughter.â
Melanie did not refuse. She thanked him on Merryâs behalf and left.
Eugene followed her out. Melanie did not stop until she was almost at the elevator, then she turned around and told him flatly, âDonât follow me.â
Eugeneâs eyes narrowed. He looked at Melanie. âIs Merry your daughterâs name?â
Melanie had mentioned that name when she was chatting with Henry.
Melanie kept her face expressionless. âYes. Itâs her nickname.â
Eugeneâs face stiffened, but then quickly relaxed. There was a glint in his dark eyes as he said, âAnd her full name is Meredith Smith?â
Melanie did not answer. Her grandfather had suggested the name back then for any future daughters Melanie might have. That was why she had registered her baby under that name without hesitation.
Thinking back now, however, she remembered that she had discussed baby names with Eugene too at one point, and they had both fantasized about having a daughter named Meredith. It had not hit her before, but now Melanie realized the name felt like she was still insinuating something about their past.
That was never her intention. She frowned slightly and turned to look at the elevator, unwilling to say anything more to Eugene.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Yvonne, her voice urgent. âTimothyâs downstairs now. He got into a fight and now heâs swearing up a storm. Iâm going to take Merry out of here for now. Weâll wait for you outside the hospital.â
At the mention of Timothy, Melanie instantly went pale. As soon as the elevator door opened, she walked in with a hardened expression. This time, she did not care if Eugene followed her.
âWhatâs wrong?â Eugeneâs cool pine scent wafted into her nostrils. The elevator was quite crowded, so he stayed close to Melanie.
âTimothy Harmon is at the hospital. Yvonne saw him She did not know if Timothy would run into Merry or recognize her, but she could not help worrying.
Her concern was not unfounded. When they arrived downstairs, she saw Timothy forcing Yvonne into a corner.
The last time Merry had been injured, Yvonne had been by his side. Naturally, Timothy remembered her.
He had just returned from a street race where he lost and even got rather seriously hurt, so he was in a very bad mood. That was when he saw Merry in Yvonneâs arms.
Timothy always thought that Merry was quite pretty, with her big, innocent, naiveâlooking eyes.
She looked like a porcelain doll â and he had the urge to smash it.
When he stood in Yvonneâs way, she jumped in shock. âWho are you?â
Timothyâs teasing voice came from above her head. âWerenât you the one who called the police on me last time? Have you forgotten about me already?â
Yvonne looked up sharply. âTimothy Harmon!â
Timothy looked down at the fair little Merry and tutted. âWhereâs her mother?â
