Nanny He sighed quietly and continued, âThere was a time when Master was in a worrying state. He seldom went to work and rarely spoke. Sometimes, he never ate anything and cooped himself up in his room for most of the day.â
Shen Manting listened without saying a word. She shifted her glance to the infant.
The infant was fast asleep. Although his facial features were not yet fully formed, his nose and mouth bore an uncanny resemblance to Shen Luoâanâs.
âIâll be going out, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Shen will be home soon,â said Nanny He.
Shen Manting nodded and began to tidy up the infantâs belongings.
True enough, Shen Longyue and Mrs. Shen returned home not long after.
The couple asked Nanny He about the infant as soon as they stepped into the house.
Mrs. Shen walked into Shen Luoâanâs room with a sympathetic expression on her face. She was taken aback when she saw Shen Manting inside.
Shen Manting smiled awkwardly and greeted her, âHello, Mrs. Shen. Itâs been a while since we last met.â
Mrs. Shen gradually regained her composure and stared at her in disbelief, before turning around to exclaim, âLongyue! Manting is back!â
Shen Longyue was setting down his briefcase outside when he heard his wife calling out to him.
He strode over to her. He, too, was shocked at the sight of Shen Manting.
Then, a smile spread across his serene face. He uttered tentatively, âManting?â
Shen Manting nodded awkwardly. She smiled and replied, âYes, Sir.â
The smile on Shen Longyueâs face froze when he heard her greet him with such a formal, impersonal salutation.
He turned to glance at Mrs. Shen and noticed that she looked sad as well.
Mrs. Shen approached Shen Manting and observed her up close, saying, âLook at you, youâve become so thin. Weâre your parents. Why donât you address us like you used to?â
Shen Manting bit her lip without saying anything.
Shen Longyue sighed and walked over to the crib.
He reached out to touch the infant and declared, âThank goodness his fever has subsided.â
Shen Manting looked at them and said, âYou should take a rest. Just leave him to me. From now on... Iâm the babyâs nanny.â
Shen Longyue looked appalled. âWhat did you say? Why would you deserve to be a nanny?â
On the other hand, Mrs. Shen looked pleased and said, âDo you mean that youâll be staying here to take care of the baby?ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Truth be told, Shen Manting hadnât thought of a definite answer to this question.
Without nodding or shaking her head, she simply affirmed, âIâll look after the baby.â
As for how long sheâll be staying, she wasnât sure yet.
Perhaps half a year, a year, or only a few months.
She was not a rightful member of the Shen family, after all. She couldnât take the child away with her. She wouldnât take away anything else from the house either.
Mrs. Shen was delighted. She looked at Shen Manting and said, âThis is great news! Iâll ask Nanny He to prepare more delectable dishes for a celebratory spread.â
âSir, Madam, thereâs no need for that.â Shen Manting looked at them. âShen Luoâan enlisted my help to be a nanny, so Iâll fulfill my role as a nanny, nothing else. The nannyâs room has been tidied up for my stay. Iâve moved in today.â
Mrs. Shenâs heart ached for her. She stomped her feet in frustration and said, âHow could this happen to you? Please donât talk like this, Manting. It upsets me to hear you say that.â
Shen Longyue felt the same. He frowned and shook his head. âYou donât deserve to be a nanny. Now that youâre back home, you should stay in your own room!â
âYes, Manting.â Mrs. Shen grasped her hands in hers. âYouâre the childâs mother. Indeed, Luoâan made a mistake before. He has been waiting for a chance to make it up to you. How about... you give the baby a proper home with Luoâan?â
