Chapter 3

Arjun patel

Crossed Hearts

Arjun stared out of the small window in his room, the chaotic streets of his hometown bustling with life below him. The air was thick with the sounds of honking cars, street vendors calling out to customers, and the distant hum of everyday life. But inside his room, all was quiet. His family had gathered around him, their voices filled with excitement and concern. Today was the day he was leaving India, embarking on a new chapter of his life.

At twenty-four, Arjun had secured a job as a nurse at a hospital in the United States. It wasn’t a dream he had planned for; it was one he had fought for. His mother’s battle with a long-term illness had ignited a passion in him—a passion for helping those who didn’t have access to proper healthcare. Growing up in a small town, he had seen firsthand how medical resources were limited, how people suffered because they couldn’t afford care or access the right treatment.

That’s why Arjun had decided to pursue nursing. It wasn’t just about a career. It was about making a difference. And now, with a job offer in hand, he was about to leave everything he knew—his family, his friends, and the life he had built here—for a world that seemed as distant as the stars.

He looked over at the suitcase on his bed, packed and ready to go. The weight of it felt symbolic—he was leaving behind his comfort zone, his roots. But he was also stepping into a new world where his skills would be tested, his knowledge stretched, and his courage pushed to the limit.

“Are you sure about this, Arjun?” His father’s voice came from the doorway, filled with concern. “This is a big step. America... it’s not going to be easy.”

Arjun smiled softly, a reassuring expression he had perfected over the years. “I know, Papa. But I have to do this. For Mom. For all the people who need help.”

His father nodded, though his eyes betrayed a mix of pride and worry. Arjun was their only child, and the thought of him so far away made his heart heavy. But he had seen Arjun’s determination. He knew his son was ready, even if his heart wasn’t.

“Just... don’t forget us, son,” his mother added from the kitchen, her voice tinged with emotion.

“I won’t, Mama. I’ll make you proud.”

And with that, Arjun took one last look at his small room, the familiar smells of his home, and the life he was about to leave behind. He wasn’t sure what the future held, but he knew one thing for certain—he was going to fight for this new life, no matter what it too
