Neighbors With Benefits: Chapter 57
Neighbors With Benefits: A Reverse Harem Romance
We made some awkward introductions with Karen and Howard. Then I led my three neighbors back across the street and into their home.
âA knife, I can understand,â I said. âBut a metal ladle? You thought you could fight someone with that?â
âDante took the good weapon,â Aiden complained.
âWe have six other knives,â Dante said bluntly.
âI donât want to use my Japanese paring knife to stab someone!â
âI appreciate your enthusiasm to rush to my defense,â I told them. âEven if your execution was a little silly.â
âI canât believe Voldemort helped you,â Bash said.
âHis name is Howard!â I snapped.
All three of them frowned at me.
âSorry,â I said. âIâm projecting my own guilt onto you. He was upset when he learned we call him that.â
âWhy did you tell him? Aiden asked.
âBecause Iâm an idiot,â I said with a sigh. âMy emotions are all over the place tonight.â
âYou seemed off while we were playing Pickleball,â Bash observed. âAnd I donât think itâs your stomach.â
Aiden nodded in agreement.
âKaren and Howard were so nice to me,â I said. âBut they are kind of snoops. They have a parabolic microphone they use to listen to conversations in the neighborhood. Thatâs how they knew I was going to break up with you guys.â
All three of them tensed at the same time.
âYou⦠what?â Aiden asked.
I touched my head. âUgh. I canât think straight. Let me start over.â
âDonât start over,â Dante growled. âIf youâre breaking up with us, then thatâs what weâre talking about first.â
âIâm not,â I said, rubbing his arm. He remained tense though, like a coiled spring.
âThey overheard a conversation I had with Cat the other day. I told her I needed to break up with you guys becauseâ¦â I hesitated. Admitting this part was hard, but seeing the confused pain on their faces was worse. âBecause Iâve developed feelings for you. All of you.â
Dante gave a little snort. Bash furrowed his brow. Aiden just said, âOh.â
âWait a minute. Theyâve been spying on us with a parabolic mic?â Bash asked.
âAnd binoculars. We can circle back to that later,â I said. âI have feelings for each of you, feelings that are growing every single day. I canât deny it any more. That terrified me, and itâs the opposite of the agreement we all had to keep things casualâ¦â
âSo you thought the way out was to dump us?â Aiden demanded, clutching the ladle to his chest.
âLet me finish! I thought that at first, yeah. I was panicking. But Karen and Howard talked me out of it. They told me that theyâve never seen you guys so happy before.â
âHow do they know how happy we are?â Aiden wondered.
âThe microphone. And binoculars. Come on dude, keep up,â Dante scolded.
âKaren said the three of you used to be angsty, always bickering with each other. Sheâs seen all your relationships come and go. Howard even counted all your individual girlfriends.â I pointed to each man in turn. âSeven, four, and three.â
Danteâs brow tightened. âSeven?â
âThey must not be counting that Australian girl you hooked up with,â Bash said.
âErin.â Dante smirked. âThat was a fun three days.â
âYouâre seriously bringing down the vibe of my big speech,â I said.
Danteâs smile disappeared. âSorry.â
âKaren and Howard both said that since I moved in, the three of you are happier than theyâve ever seen before,â I continued. âThey insisted that we should stay together.â
âSo⦠they know about our situation? How the three of us are sharing you?â Bash asked.
Dante grunted. âForget about knowing. They actually approve?â
âThatâs the part that shocked me the most,â I said. âTheyâre accepting of our weird polyamorous relationship.â
Aiden tossed his ladle across the room. âJazz, I donât care about the rules we set up when we started having sex. I tried keeping it casual, but I just canât. I love you, Jazz.â
The words were like a shock to my system. I might have gasped.
He loves me?
âOr at least, Iâm falling in love with you,â he quickly added. âI donât know. Iâve been thinking about my feelings a lot lately, and all that matters is theyâre strong.â
Aiden crossed the room and knelt in front of me. âI canât just be your friend with benefits. I want more, Jazz. I need more. Deep down, Iâve known that since we were first intimate. Maybe even before that, when we were still having innocent game nights.â
Everything he said was a validation of my own emotions. It was like he knew exactly what I needed to hear. Except these were his genuine feelings, not just a man saying whatever he needed to say to make me happy. I could see the love in his eyes.
Bash sat on the couch next to me and took both of my hands in his. âI donât think Iâm ready to drop an L-bomb, but I care deeply about you, Jazz. Since the moment I met you, when you walked in on me in the bathroom at your housewarming party, Iâve had a big fat crush on you. Iâve tried pretending like itâs casual, but it hasnât been. Not since we first started hanging out on game nights, not since we began hooking up, and definitely not now.â
âI canât take these confessions of love seriously,â Dante said. âYouâre all wearing dumb neon workout clothes.â
Aiden turned and cleared his throat. âYou donât have anything you want to say to her?â
âShe knows how I feel about her.â
âDoes she?â Bash asked.
âIâm not sure I do,â I said, eager to hear what Dante had to say.
âTell her what you told us earlier,â Aiden insisted. âWhen we were standing in front of Voldemortâs door.â
âHowardâs door,â I corrected. âBut yes! What did you say then?â
Dante leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. âI said youâre a cool neighbor, and a great fuck.â
âAfter that,â Aiden insisted.
Danteâs gaze collided with mine. He stared at me for three long seconds, and I wondered if he was going to say anything else at all.
âI enjoy your company,â he finally said. âThatâs why I came home early. Because I canât stand to be away from you another minute longer. Because I feel like Iâll fucking die when weâre apart.â
His confession meant the most to me, I realized. He wasnât the kind of guy who shared his emotions, so this was a huge admission.
âI am a great fuck though, right?â I asked.
His lip curled in a smirk. âThe best.â
I looked at each of my neighbors, my lovers, and smiled. I felt so much love from them right now. It washed over me like a warm shower, cleansing away all of my doubts.
My doubts.
âThank you for sharing how you feel,â I said. âBut Iâm still worried about the future. How all of this would work.â
âWhatâs confusing about it?â Bash asked.
âBig things. I want children. A family. How would that work?â
âWe all want kids,â Aiden replied simply.
âTwo, maybe three,â Bash added.
Still leaning against the wall, Dante only nodded.
âWhat about how society will treat us?â I continued. âWill our friends accept this situation? What about our family? And then there are other people, neighbors and colleagues, our kidsâ teachers and the other parents. What if they judge us?â
Dante snorted. âWho gives a fuck?â
âI donât care if people judge us,â Bash said. âDante and Aiden are the best friends I have, so no problem there. And if other people are weird about it, I can shrug it off.â
âI do have concerns about family,â Aiden admitted. âMy grandparents will never understand, but I only have to see them maybe once a year. My mom, thoughâ¦â He stared off. âI hope she would accept this. I donât know. But ultimately, thatâs not as important as the feelings I have for you, Jazz. And itâs certainly not a reason to self-destruct our entire relationship.â
âFuck everyone else,â Dante said bluntly. âIf people wonât accept us? Then I donât want them in our lives.â
All of them had clearly given this a lot of thought. Because of course they hadâtheyâd been considering a relationship like this since before they even met me. That was oddly reassuring. They had the same concerns I did, but werenât going to let it stop them.
Their confidence, their certainty, quickly bled into my own emotions. If they were fine with it, then I could be too.
We would strengthen each other. Lean on each other. In that regard, this relationship would be stronger than a so-called normal relationship.
âI think weâve convinced her,â Bash said with a grin.
Aiden was still kneeling on the ground. He sighed, then leaned forward to kiss me. âHave we convinced you?â
Slowly, I nodded. âI just have one question. What now?â
