Chapter Fifty-Six
The Alpha Princess
Celina
For the first time in weeks, I slept without any nightmares. No smoke. No fire. Just reassuring emptiness. It was nice. Itâs so quiet that I almost forgot what silence sounds like. Itâs amazing and I never know why people think itâs overrated. For the first time in weeks I can breathe, and I know the moment that anyone knows Iâm awake itâs going to be gone. Thatâs usually what happens. No wonder I rarely ever saw my father during the day. Iâve never wanted to live this life, but Iâd be damned if everyone didnât insist I was designed for this.
Predictably, a knock sounds on my bedroom door; shattering a deeply needed illusion of peace. When I open my eyes, I see Chris and I are still in the same position we fell asleep in.
Chris just squeezes me harder and kisses the top of my head. âMorning Cel.â
I smile, relieved to hear him saying that. âMorning sweetness. How are you feeling today?â
âSore,â he chuckles, âbut totally worth it.â
I glance up at him and smile at the sparkle in his eyes. âIâd say it was. You were not willing to be denied last night.â
A blush creeps up his neck. âYou did mark me again and you were in heat.â
âA lethal combination,â I agree before kissing him. âWe can chalk last night up to biology.â
âYes it was all biology,â he agrees sarcastically. âIt had nothing to do with the fact that you were missed and I spent three hellish weeks thinking you had left me.â
I roll my eyes at the dramatic note in his tone. âWell, if someone had just woken up, heâd have seen I was there with him.â I kiss him again. âBy the way, youâre not allowed to do that to me again.â
âOnly if you donât do it to me,â he tells me before giving me a long-lasting kiss.
The knock comes again, but itâs louder this time. I groan. âDo you think theyâll go away if we donât answer it?â
âNot likely,â Ruben calls from the other side of the door. âAre you decent or not?â
âMeeting?â I ask him; sitting up after giving Chris one last kiss.
âMore like we have a furious councilman. I thought we agreed it was my job to piss them off?â
âAron?â I ask him while I walk to the closet. âYou can come in now,â I tell him while I close the closet door.
âYou have two meetings today,â he tells me when I hear the door open. âWhat the hell did you say to him? He woke me up at six screaming something about his colon and his opinion.â
I pull on a sage green dress with a peasant bodice and floral hand-stitching to soften it. I grab a pair of white flats and step out of the closet. âHe had it coming,â I tell Ruben simply while I step into the bathroom.
âHow?â Ruben demands while I run a brush through my hair. âWhat did he say to you that was so bad that you told him to eat his own opinions?
I give a hard sigh and fix my make-up. âIâd rather not talk about it right now,â I hint; thinking of Chris. I just got him back and Iâd rather not broach this subject with him in the room. He stays silent while I pull my hair half up. After adjusting the dress I go back out to the bedroom.
âYou called him a twat. I think it warrants a conversation.â
I fold my arms and look at Ruben. Heâs dressed in a suit and rather seems amused. Heâs relaxing on the couch with his feet propped up on it. âI didnât say opinion. I only told him that if he had any disputes with my choices that he should write it on a piece of paper and then eat it, because when the note passes through his colon thatâs the only acknowledgment itâs going to get.â
He raises his eyebrow while Chris laughs, âAnd why was that?â
I glance at Chris to try to convey Iâd rather discuss this later, but he doesnât get it. âCelina, why would you say that to a member of the council?
How thick can this man be? âHe wanted to know what would happen if I were to suddenly find myself without a mate. I told him you get to be king, and I would step down. That didnât sit well with the prick and he basically told me itâs my job to move on and continue on the royal line.â
Ruben stiffens and Chris gives off an audible growl. âIâm sorry, what was that?â Itâs always been weird to me when those two speak at the same time in the same menacing voice.
âHis exact words were: âit is your duty to preserve our kingdom and do whatâs best for it. Even if that means living after the death of a mate. That also includes securing a future line.â He pissed me off so instead of killing him, I was a little rough with him verbally.â
Ruben gets up off the couch. âIâll take your breakfast meeting with the council today. Iâd like to have a little chat with Aron. Get Chris back to the hospital ward before his nursing staff has a coronary.â
âGive Aron my best,â I call after Ruben after he stalks out of the room. He wasnât going to give me the option to say no on this one.
âThis Aron,â Chris starts when I head back to the closet, âheâs a council member?â
âYep,â I tell him while I pull out a pair of grey sweats and a white shirt for him.
After grabbing him a pair of slippers and underwear, I continued the conversation. âOne of the few of the original that hadnât sworn themselves to Damian. Heâs also a grade âAâ pain in my ass.â
I walk out of the closet to hand him a change of clothes. âGet dressed and I can take you back to your room.â
âDoes he approach you with questions like that often?â Chris asks, grabbing his underwear.
I think about it. âKind of. Heâs one of those tools who are desperate to get ahead. I think he wanted to take your place as king instead of Ruben.â
âI think he has a crush on you,â Chris tells me, getting to his feet to pull on his sweats.
I scoff, âThat little bastard hates me, and I him. Iâd rather touch Wolfsbane than be near that jerk off.âI shake my head at that ridiculous thought. âEither way, I canât wait to see his face when I tell him Emma Bordaga is taking over Randaulâs role.â
âMiaâs mother,â Chris asks when I help him put on his shirt.
I shrug. âItâs the most logical. Sheâs been acting in his stead since Randaul fled. The day after the attack, both of the Bordagaâs presented themselves to me, bared their necks, and swore absolute fealty to me. Emma has been the most supportive and sheâs by far the most knowledgeable regarding the Grand Chancellor role.â
âAnd it doesnât bother you that her daughter is my ex-girlfriend?â
I point to my marks. âShould it?â
He laughs and kisses the top of my head. âNot in the slightest.â
âGood,â I tell him before retrieving his cane for him. âAlright old man, itâs time to go see your doctor.â
He glowers at me while I put on my shoes. âYouâre going to enjoy this, arenât you?â
âJust the jokes,â I assure him when I touch his back to get him moving.
âSounds about right,â he tells me while he shuffles out of the room.
âSo turtle speed it is,â I sigh.
He smirks, âI can make jokes too.â He picks up the pace while I roll my eyes. I catch up with him quickly and grab his free hand. âSo whatâs on the agenda for today?â
I think about it. âWell, since Ruben took my breakfast meeting, I just have one with Leroy. It doesnât start until one, so I have some time to hang out with you.â
âWhy are you meeting with Leroy?â
âTo go over battle strategy,â I tell him before flashing him a smile. âWell, thatâs what Iâm changing the meeting to. The original one was to go over guard shifts and training strategies. He is also going to help me practice fighting in my human body since I still canât shift. Iâve gained enough strength to hurt a lycan, but most of them are still significantly stronger than me. I gave Mia a black eye the other day,â I tell him proudly. âAnd I knocked Leroy on his butt. I still think he was taking it easy on me though.â
Chris chuckles. âMia seems like sheâs becoming a good friend of yours.â
I shrug. âWe hang out and her mate is my friend. Weâre friends but not friend friends.â
He flashes me a confused look. âThat makes zero sense.â
âIn your world it does, but not mine,â I tell him while we turn the corner.
âWhat battle are you talking about?â
I hesitate before answering. âDamianâ¦reached out to me yesterday.â
âWhat do you mean he reached out to you?â Chris demands, stopping to look at me.
I grimace. âI donât really want to talk about it here,â I tell him; motioning around the very active hallway.
âCelina,â Chris says with a growl.
âTell you what,â I start. âYou go to your hospital bed and, after youâre sedated, Iâll tell you.â
âCelina,â he warns.
I sigh and hand my phone over to him. âItâs easier for you to look at it yourself, instead of explaining it to you. You might want to wait until weâre in a room before you do.â
He raises his eyebrow but nods. Once I have him in his hospital room, I close the door and let him watch the video.
âThereâs a note,â I tell him when I hear him nearing the end of the video. I steer him away from the door and have him sit on the bed. I go back to lean against the door in case anyone tries to come in.
âA note,â he choked out when Damian reiterated heâll be seeing me in three weeks. He swipes to it and reads it. I know when heâs finished because he accidentally crushes my phone in his hand.
I groan. âGreat, now I need another one.â
âSorry,â Chris mumbles; staring at the parts of the destroyed phone in his hand.
I wave him off. âYouâre good. Ruben and Xander bought a large bulk for a joke after I accidentally dropped my phone into one of the garden ponds two weeks ago.â
I move to sit next to him. âDonât,â Chris growls at me. âItâs not safe to be near me right now.â
I take a step back and fold my arms. I know better than to test that boundary. He may not fully be able to shift, but he can still grow the sharp things I need to worry about. Chris gets up and starts pacing, and I can feel his anger from across the room.
Mara flinches, âRajin is trying to shift, and since they canât heâs going ballistic.â
âShould we leave?â I ask her when Chris kicks at the chair next to the bed.
âIt might be the safer option.â
âNo,â Chris growls in a mixture of his and Rajinâs voice. âNo, you canât be left alone.â
âI wonât be alone,â I tell him soothingly. âIâll have one of the boys with me.â
âNo,â he says quickly and with a stubborn note in his voice. âI donât want you out of my sight.â
I raise my eyebrow at him. âThatâs a bit possessive.â
He takes an exaggerated deep breath. âCelina, I just woke up from a hell where you werenât in it. Then I saw thatâ¦Please, just for today, humor me.â
I sigh heavily, not wanting to be apart from him either. âIf I see any sign of you being in pain, youâre coming right back here.â
He nods quickly to agree. âDeal.â
âGood, because the moment after the doctor examines you today, weâre getting food in you, getting me a new phone, then meeting up with Leroy.â
He smirks and I can feel him begin to calm down. âI can deal with that.â
