The Spare Wife by Nadia Gordon
Chapter 496 Afraid Iâll Never See You Again Sean fell silent for a moment before saying, âI feel like sheâs been acting strangely lately. Iâm worried she might be doing something behind our backs that could put her in danger, so I had Xavien take a look.â
Abigail was a bit surprised by Seanâs response. She didnât know how to respond for a moment. After a while, she said, âThank you. Iâll call her and check. I talked to her last night, so there shouldnât be a problem, right?â
âJust to be safe, ask again,â Sean said. âI also had Xavien go to her neighbor to ask about the police report.â
Just as Abigail was about to hang up, Sean added, âDonât call immediately. Wait a bit, find a suitable excuse to call, and make it seem natural.â
âSean, is there something youâre worried she might encounter? Is that why youâre being so cautious?â Abigail couldnât help but ask.
âIf we assume sheâs facing danger, then itâs even more important for us to act like we know nothing. But if she isnât, it wonât hurt.
Does that make sense?â Sean comforted Abigail. He was afraid she might rush back to see Luna without keeping her cool.
âYouâre right, but your words are making me nervous,â Abigail admitted, unable to control her anxious thoughts.
Just as Sean was about to respond, it seemed like someone was talking to him. He replied at few sentences before turning back to Abigail. âNothingâs wrong. Xavien said Luna went out to get takeout.â
âOh, thatâs good,â Abigail sighed with relief.
âBut Xavien mentioned that she slipped in the bathroom last night and seemed to have hurt. her leg. She didnât tell you?â Sean asked, feigning casualness.
âNo, she probably didnât want to worry me,â Abigail replied. When she sensed someone approaching her, she continued, âThank you for letting me know all this. Iâm a bit busy right now.â
She hung up the phone, her mind still on Lunaâs leg injury.
After Sean ended the call, he told Xavien, âFind Cameron, keep Abigail busy, and make sure she doesnât call Luna to ask about her leg. Make sure Cameron accomplishes this. Otherwise, he can forget about ever returning to my side!â
âYes!â Xavien quickly went to make the call.
1/3 Luna had slipped in the bathroom in the middle of the night. Her loud cries of pain woke up the neighbors, but they hadnât called an ambulance...
Abigail was busy until it was almost lunchtime. She was just about to call Luna when Alfie hurriedly came in.
âCameronâs good eye seems to be having a problem. Can you go take a look? I have something to attend to today and might not be able to take care of him for a while.â Alfieâs tone was urgent, almost exaggerated.
Abigail couldnât help but frown. âTell the doctor Iâll see him after Iâve finished eating.â
âYou need to go now; heâs afraid he might lose his eyesight and never see you again.â Alfieâs excuse was terrible.
Even so, Abigail still agreed to go with him.
As soon as Alfie saw her pick up her phone, he got nervous.
âUm, do you have an urgent matter?â he asked, deliberately probing.
âItâs nothing important. Iâm just calling a friend,â Abigail answered.
âWhich friend? Is it something urgent?â Alfie continued to ask.
Abigail looked at him with displeasure. âIs there something you want to say? Why are you prying into my business?â
âOh, I was just thinking, what if Iâm not in a position to hear? After all, weâre not very familiar with each other. What if youâre discussing something confidential, and it leaks out and causes trouble for you?â Alfieâs excuse was getting weaker by the second.
Abigail squinted at him for a moment, then decided to put her phone down. âWhatâs going on with Cameron? Why did you lie to me so that I have to go see him at the hospital?â
Alfie thought, Youâre way too clever.
âI really donât know, but he asked me to find you. He told me, no matter what, I have to trick. you into going to the hospital. He was looking all mysterious, too,â Alfie replied earnestly.
âWhat does my phone have to do with his situation?â Abigail continued to ask.
âMaybe heâs afraid youâll notify Mr. Graham. If Mr. Graham rushes over in a panic and sees that Cameronâs fine, heâll want to give him a good beating,â Alfie continued, feeling pleased with himself for coming up with a convincing story.
Abigail nodded, letting Alfie off the hook.
<
2/3 âDonât worry. I wonât call Sean,â she said and was about to call Luna again.
Unfortunately, Alfie got anxious again. He scratched his head and looked around, and by now, the call had already connected.
Abigail was just about to ask Luna about her leg when Luna spoke first, âThis mini-program is really fun. I spent a long time creating it. Can you tell me how to make mine look as real as yours?â
She didnât mention her leg injury, and Abigail didnât want to press the matter further. Instead, she happily explained how to use the Alfie stood nearby, sweating profusely.
program.
In the end, Abigail didnât get the chance to ask about Lunaâs leg injury long after the conversation ended.
Maybe Luna didnât want me to worry, so she kept it to herself. Perhaps not asking was the right thing to do... Maybe Lunaâs mood isnât as good as I had thought, and accepting the fact that she canât manage L.Moon isnât as easy as it seems.
Alfie breathed a sigh of relief.
Cameron was just one step away from certain death...
He couldnât help but let out a sigh.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â Abigail glanced at him.
Alfie immediately shook his head. âOh, I heard that your friend resigned under pressure. Iâm afraid sheâs not in a good mood, so I was almost afraid to breathe.â
âWhat nonsense,â Abigail muttered.
Then, she took out her phone to check the messages from clients after saying that.
Yet, everything around her felt strangely eerie, especially in this moment of tranquility.
