Chapter 26
Love’s Cunning Ruse ( Mr.Kieran And Julie )
Chapter 26
âMom, Julie said itâs not a big deal, why are you so worried?â Daphne rolled her eyes, grabbed an apple, and was ready to take a bite.
Edda quickly snatched the apple from her hand and shoved it into Julieâs, turning back to Daphne, âAll you think about is food! As a staff member of a fashion magazine, donât you need to keep your figure? If you get fat, you could lose your job after you leave the hospital.
âGot it! Mom, youâre so annoyingââ Daphne pouted, giving Edda an unhappy stare.
But Edda completely ignored Daphneâs dissatisfaction, instead, she turned to Julie enthusiastically. âJulie, being divorced is not a big deal, youâre still a catch. Remember Mrs. Graham, who lives across from us? Her classmateâs son is 34 this year, a decent age. The important thing is that heâs reliable and coâowns a tech company with his buddy. He may not be dropâdead gorgeous, but heâs not badâlooking either. When it comes to boyfriends, looks arenât everything.â
As Edda went on and on, Julie was at a loss for words.
Edda continued to hold Julieâs hand, saying, âThe guyâs never been married. He had a girlfriend once, but they split after seven years. Heâs been single for a while now. Iâve mentioned you to him, and he doesnât mind that youâve been divorced. I think heâs pretty honest. Why donât you guys meet and have a chat? If you donât like him, you can just make a new friend; the more the merrier.â
âMom, can you stop acting like a matchmaker? Our Julieâs not gonna die an old maidâ Daphne came to Julieâs defense again.
Edda turned to glare at Daphne, âAre you jealous? If Julie doesnât want to go, you can!â
Daphne pointed to her nose, her eyes wide open as she looked at her mother, âMe?â
Julie smiled and nodded at Edda, âThank you, Edda; Iâll go.â
Daphne looked at Julie, shocked.
It wasnât until Edda cheerfully turned around to arrange the blind date that Julie turned to Daphne and grinned, âDo you want to thank me?â
Daphne patted the side of her bed, âWanna sit down?â
Only then did Daphne realize that Julieâs intention was not to go on the blind date but to help her dodge this bullet. After all, if her mom didnât find someone to go on this date, neither she nor Julie would have a minute of peace.
Daphne glanced at Edda, who was on the phone by the window arranging the blind date, and sighed, âThatâs just how my mom is. Sheâs always obsessing over marriage stuff.â
âWhat do you mean obsessing? Iâm doing all this for your future happiness.â Edda hung up the phone and turned to look at Daphne as her eyes narrowed dangerously.
Daphne turned her head, pretending everything was normal, then said to Julie Julie, Iâm telling you, donât worry too much about your appearance when going on blind dates. Try to dress down a bit, so people wonât only value you for your looks. Nine out of ten of the guys my mom used to set me up with were total dudsâ
Julie smiled.
Edda walked over and tugged at Daphneâs arm. âThe biggest failure of my life is giving birth to an ungrateful child like you!â
âMom, even though Iâm ungrateful, youâve still raised me all these years, so I guess you must like me.â Daphne grinned.
Edda shot back, âYouâre my daughter; of course I have to raise you.â
Then she turned to Julie, âJulie, Iâve arranged your blind date. Itâs set for tomorrow at noon. Tomorrow morning, Iâll take you to buy some surtable clothes. Donât always listen to Daphne; I had a difficult labor when I gave birth to her, so her brain might be a little off.â
Daphne was speechless.
Their motherâdaughter relationship was truly inexplicable; they were always at each otherâs throats.
