Chapter 43
Accidental Amore
Everyone in the office is eating cupcakes while I, in frustration, am pacing around, sitting down on a chair and then standing up again. Geet walks into my office and sits in my chair. Just then, someone comes in for a signature and, seeing her in my chair, places the file in front of her. His eyes were wide and a bit nervous. I looked at Geet and asked angrily,
"Why are you doing all this?"
"Your mom assigned me this task. it's so hard for me... I didn't even want to do it," Geet said, struggling to keep a straight face.
"This whole plan of saree is awful! I'm not going to change for anyone. this is my life, and things can't go back to how they were. Everything has changed, Geet."
Geet took out a diary from her purse and handed me a pen. "You should hold on to this pen. I'll take care of things in the company. Writing is your peace and your hobby, isn't it? This way, you won't feel so frustrated."
For a moment, I was stunned as if she had voiced my own thoughts, but then I snapped back and said, "I don't want to write anything. Stop trying to change my life. I'll tell my mom the truth."
"Yesterday, you were crying your heart out after a big hug," she said, meeting my gaze.
My cheeks started to hurt from the warmthâthey were that flushed.
"It was a mistake. I get weak sometimes," I replied, looking away.
"You missed me, didn't you? You really do care about me. My company needs a new product, and your company has a successful productâyour team makes excellent earphones. so, I want you to buy your company to me."
"So, you can make a big name for yourself, become the richest woman in India?" I asked, struggling to keep my anger in check.
"Exactly! Right now, someone else holds the top spotâI'm second, and you're third. But Deepika, the daughter of a wealthy man, is at number one, and her company is actually run by her brother, though it's all under her name."
" You want me to just Sell it over to you?
"Of course! Win over the heart of Earth Company, or if that doesn't work, blackmail them?" Geet smirked.
"And what will you give me in return? This is such a big decisionâdo you think I've lost my mind to actually consider it?" I said, standing up angrily.
Geet closed the office door, locked it, came close, and whispered in my ear, "I'll marry you. Amoreâ loveâwill come into your life again."
"You want to marry me?" I was shocked, torn between my loneliness and Geet's tempting offer.
Geet leaned back and said, "This time, it won't be an Accidental Amore. It will be real marriage, with all the rituals, everythingâthink about it, Payal Agarwal."
I didn't respond, feeling frustrated. Finally, I said, "This Beat Company was a dream for earth. I can't sell it. And I won't marry you."
Geet picked up her bag and said, "Well, I'll tell you the truth to your mom on tomorrow, if you don't tell me your decision. (take a pause) Payal I don't like NO word."
I glanced her, realizing I couldn't do what she was asking. My eyes followed her as she left, and memories of Earth flashed before meâthe first call when she wanted to create a company, and how I ended up working with them. I could still see Earth's smiling face.
A once-empty room, where no one. No longer empty with Geet's arrival. But the thought of selling a company that Earth and I built with so much love? My mind was spinning.
