Emperor of Lust: Chapter 28
Emperor of Lust: A Dark Mafia Enemies To Lovers Romance
By mid-morning, my thoughts are a jumble. By noon, Iâm a fucking mess.
Damian is missing.
Cold panic has settled in, making my chest tighten with every passing second. He isnât answering any messages. Thereâs been no sign of him since last night, no trail to follow.
Justâ¦vanished, into thin air.
I feel like Iâm going insane. My mind wonât stop seeing his face, replaying every intense moment weâve shared. The way he looks at me like Iâm something he needs. Something precious.
Itâs not even a question anymore. What I feel for this man⦠Itâs nothing Iâve ever known before. A feeling with a particular word Iâve never used with anyone outside my family. And I donât know how it happened, or what it means for the future, but I do know this:
Somehow, I fucking fell in love with Damian. And I wonât lose him.
Iâm pacing the hotel room, waiting for Kai to report back on his search of the city, when I glance to Takeshi, a grim expression on his face.
âWe burned Kolyaâs hostess club. Damian mentioned he had to âtake care of something bigâ right afterward. Those were his exact words.â He glances at me and makes a face. âIâ¦sort of thoughtâ¦you knowâ¦â He trails off, uncomfortable.
âYou thought he meant what?!â I press, my heart pounding.
âI thought he was making a gross euphemism about hooking up with you!â he groans, his mouth twisting in disgust, frustration in his eyes. âClearly, I was wrong.â
Just then Kai walks in, his face as grim as Takâs. âNothing. I mean, itâs a huge goddamn city, but weâve checked every place he could be. Itâs like heâs just disappeared.â
I shut my eyes, trying not to fall apart. This is Damian. He doesnât just disappear.
My phone rings and I scramble to answer, seeing that itâs Freya on FaceTime. Both families were apprised of Damianâs disappearance this morning when I woke up to see no trace of him. Freya, hacker queen that she is, has been trying to triangulate and track his position from cell tower data.
âAnything?â I blurt anxiously.
Her face is grim. âNot yet,â she says tightly, her voice strained. âTokyoâs massive,â Freya continues. âSignals get lost in the cityâs data mess. Iâve been looking for a social media account pinging his phone or a web cookie trying to scrape him for ad data, but thereâs nothing. His phone must be off.â
âOff?â I cling to my own phone like it might pull Damian back to me.
Freya nods, frowning. âThere is one thing Iâm not supposed to be tapped intoâ¦well, a bunch of stuff Iâm not really supposed to be tapped intoâ¦but anyway, I just saw an internal report from the State Department about a possible break-in last night at the US Ambassadorâs residence in Tokyo?â
I frown. âYou think Damian broke into it?â
She huffs out a breath. âNot really, but it struck me asâoff. Dunno. Could be worth digging into. I just have a weird feeling. Anyway, Iâm jumping back in. Call you back if I snag anything.â
When we end the call, I turn to see Takeshi standing there, his face hard.
âWhat?â I demand, a little too sharply.
He clears his throat and glances at Kai, his expression inscrutable. âCould youâ¦â
Kai nods without any protest before he turns and leaves us, stepping out of the room.
âThat might be our lead,â Tak murmurs. âI think that was Damian.â
I stare at him. âWhy the fuck would Damian break into the Ambassadorâs house?â
Takeshi hesitates before answering. âThe new Ambassador isnât just anyone, Hana.â His voice drops. âHeâs Kempton Donahue.â
The name hits me like a physical blow. I feel my knees buckle, my hand instinctively reaching out to steady myself against the wall.
âWhat?â
âAs of a month ago. Heâs serving out his Senate term, but heâs already in Tokyo.â
My heart drops, my pulse thudding like lead in my veins. âDamianâ¦went to them?â I whisper. All the pieces fall horribly into place, fear and anger and helplessness all swirling together.
âTheyâ¦â my head swims. âTak, theyâ ââ
âI remember,â he growls, his eyes narrowed. âI remember when those fucks came and harassed you afterâ ââ
âTak,â I say quietly. My face falls, the color draining from it as I look up at him with a pained expression on my face.
âHana?â
âThereâsâ¦more to it than that.â
It all falls out. Iâve never told anyone about the painting, and the money, and constant threats from Joshâs parents. Only Damian, just the other day.
But as the words just fall out of me, I watch my brotherâs face rampage through all manner of emotions: pain, anger, sympathy, sadnessâ¦until finally it settles on something cold, brutal, and venomous.
âWe have to goââ I start, my voice wavering as I fight to control the vortex of emotions.
Takeshi stops me, his hand firm on my shoulder. âNo.â His voice is as cold and unyielding as the unnervingly icy expression on his face. âNo, this oneâs all me.â
âTakeshiââ
âNo,â he repeats, his tone steely, and I see a darkness in his eyes that sends a chill down my spine. âThose motherfuckers put you through hell, Hana,â he hisses through clenched teeth. âThis has been a long time coming. If Damianâs missing because of themâ¦â His hands clench. âThose bastards are due for a reckoning.â
Every instinct screams to run, to fight, to do anything I can to bring Damian back. But I see the fierce determination in my brotherâs eyes, and I know he wonât let me.
Takeshi heads for the door, giving me a hard look over his shoulder. âIâll get him back, Hana. Donât worry.â
And then heâs gone, leaving me with nothing but my frantic heartbeat and the crushing weight of helplessness.
