âHow much tragedy has to happen before I slip wide open?â
â Alisa Mullen, Unrequited
EVERETT P.O.V
âSorryâ Genessa said sheepishly as Myron purposefully winced in pain.
Someone please get me a bucket so that I can puke. I am not here to watch puppies romancing. Terence and January were talking with the fighters who accompanied Myron.
âI am really sorryâ Genessa whispered and I rolled my eyes. My ears were ringing because from the past fifteen minutes, I have only been hearing her say sorry to her mate.
âIf you are done, can you please give me the address of the next rogue?â I queried in frustration. And just like the last five times, neither Genessa nor Myron heard me. I wanted to punch something really hard.
âItâs no big thing cupcakeâ Myron said and Genessa turned scarlet to the roots of her blonde hair. âI am perfectly fineâ he said gently running his thumb on her cheek, which only added color to Genessaâs cheeks.
âGreatâ I said sarcastically. âHe is perfectly fine. So now, can you please give me the address of the next rogue?â I all but snapped at Genessa. Myron turned to frown at me and I glared at him. âSeriously, what are you doing here?â I asked Myron, cocking an eyebrow.
âI came here to help you in finding Princessâ Myron replied and I growled. âKeith called and told you were not help and since he couldnât leave the pack, he asked me to go.â
âPrincess?â Genessa demanded, raising her eyebrows.
âTemplarâ he replied with a smile and she nodded. âWe are friendsâ he added. I didnât miss the way she pursued her lips and looked away without saying anything. She didnât like it or maybe itâs her wolf. I know about it because my wolf doesnât like Myron being close to Templar.
âI was managing fineâ I said politely.
âYou were. But with my help you will be better than fineâ he said smirking and I desperately wanted to wipe that smirk from his face. âSo, I threatened Arthur and I am convinced he doesnât know the whereabouts of Templarâ
âTotally?â I asked skeptically and Myron nodded.
âHow did you find us here?â January asked curiously.
âWhile returning, I caught your scentâ Myron said nodding towards me. âWhat are you doing seeking help from rogues? Those wretched mutts are of no helpâ he said with a frown and Genessa stiffened. It was my turn to smirk now.
âWell, I figured Templar might be kidnapped by rogues and asked your mate to provide me information of all her friendsâ I said smugly and Myron lost color. His mouth dropped open but he quickly closed it and snarled at me. âThatâs right, she is a rogueâ I added and Myron turned to face Genessa with a stunned expression. âAnd an Alphaâs daughter tooâ I couldnât help but add because I didnât want to create rifts in their relationship, that is if he has a problem with her being in rogue.
âAlphaâs daughter?â Myron asked her cocking an eyebrow.
âMy full name is Genessa Carrie Thompsonâ Genessa whispered numbly.
âMarco Thompson?â
âDayDuskâ she confirmed and I sighed.
âYou know, you can get to know each other, on the way. Please give us Klausâs address nowâ January asked and Genessa nodded.
Jumping into the SUV, along with Terence and January, I started driving without wasting any time.
âGive me the fourth addressâ I said to Genessa as we were descending the stairs. Klausâs house was empty just like Ashâs and I gritted my teeth in frustration. I was sure that Klaus and his group were murdered by Templar. Whoever assigned these rogues, promised them money in return but not their life.
The person who appointed these rogues, I knew, was smart and was playing a very clever game. He left no dead-end.
He used these rogues like pawns. He knew the chances of their survival were next to none. And if I am not mistaken, he wanted it to be that way so that ultimately, Templar comes to him. The bad thing is I didnât know if Templar did go to him or is she somewhere else.
And the worst thing- the other player won each and every round so far.
I despised myself for it because I practically felt I am useless. Itâs like my hands were tied, behind my back along with my legs.
âLetâs goâ Terence said as soon as he received the address.
âAlso, call Zander and ask him if he knows any other rogues living nearby.â
âSo, three groups of rogues and yet you found nothing?â Myron asked doubtfully and I nodded. He stared at me silently asking me what the fuck is going on.
âItâs premeditatedâ was all that I said before getting inside the car.
âWhat time is it?â Terence enquired.
I checked the time and gulped when I realized it was three thirty in the morning. âThree thirty a.m. What happened to your watch?â I questioned.
âIt stopped. We are indeed facing a bad timeâ he muttered closing his eyes.
January was already sleeping in the backseat, but since I had rested the whole day, I wasnât as much tired.
Terence fell asleep, while we were midway.
The fourth address was a house. Quickly climbing out, I inhaled deeply to be aware of the number of wolves inside the house. As I took in the scent, I stiffened in shock.
âWhatâs the name of the person living here?â I asked Genessa staring at the two floors house.
âEfronâ she replied coolly and Terence stiffened while I sucked in a breath. âKnown as Ron is Zanderâs friend. I have only met him once.â
âMy dad is not a rogueâ I murmured climbing the stairs and with determination, I made loud and clear use of the knocker.
Almost ten minutes later, the door opened and my dad gasped in surprise as he saw me. âSonâ he whispered and stepped away to let me in. I looked at his house which had a spectacular interior. He lived rich. He always did.
Even after I had ordered my dad to leave the GreenRock territory, I kept transferring money to his account because I didnât want him depending on others. Â I have never spoken a word to my dad ever since he left the territory. I did send him a wedding card but now I figured it was to a wrong address.
There were two human manservants in the house, who walked away when my dad inclined his head.
âWhat brings you boys here?â he enquired rubbing his eyes as I and Terence sat on the sofa. Myron and Genessa didnât come in with us. âAnd at this time?â
âTemplar is missingâ I muttered somberly.
âWhat?â my dad said in shock.
âWe were asking for the address of rogues, since I assume they kidnapped herâ I continued. âSince when did you turn to be a rogue?â I growled.
âI am not a rogue. I am just friends with oneâ he said defensively.
âZanderâ I said scowling at him.
âHe is a very good person.â Dad said and I rolled my eyes heavenwards. âNow back to the main topic, what the hell happened?â he asked me and I told him everything.
âWhite Wolfâ he whispered in shock and I snarled furiously. âCanât believe that girl is a White Wolfâ he murmured to himself.
âYes, she is a White Wolf. Now get over the fact and tell me, if you have heard about any kidnapping?â I asked tetchily.
âNoâ he replied shaking his head.
âThen ask that Zander friend of yoursâ I said desperately. âAnd call meâ I said getting up.
âI will. So itâs all true right? Sir Thomas and everything?â Dad asked me and I nodded.
âJust help meâ I appealed.
âYou donât have to askâ dad replied closing the distance between us. I returned the hug and closed my eyes. It gave me the comfort; I needed at the situation I was in. My wolf rested his head in his paws.
âI will call youâ he said when I turned to leave.
While I was about to close the door, I couldnât help but add, âSince I am no more the Alpha of GreenRock, you are free to return to your homeâ I said and my dad smiled and shook his head.
âItâs no longer my home. The place brings bad memories for me. I am happy living hereâ
âIf you wish soâ I said.
âI hope you find your mate. I certainly donât want you to go through what I wentâ he said and I gulped. After losing mom, my dad became mean and heartless person. He really lost all his faith in love and was rude to almost everyone in the pack. Templar had suffered a lot from it.
Taking a deep breath, I resumed driving, while Myron and his mate followed us.
It was almost eight in the morning when I woke up next. I had parked my car in the parking lot of a hotel from ThunderSky at around five in the morning.
My wolf was going restless inside me and I groaned. There was a beep and I checked my inbox. There were three addresses and then a note at the end.
You guys check these three, on the east; we are going west - Genessa.
Without wasting further time, I commenced driving.
âNo?â January asked and Terence shook his head in reply.
Growling, I climbed into the car and closed the door with a thud. I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes while January drove to the next and last location, while Terence called Myron to know about their whereabouts.
It was six in the evening and we still havenât found her. There werenât any rouges in the first place we visited and in the second place, there was a family. The rogue was married to a human and he was living a decent family life. He didnât know anything about the White Wolf and truth to be told, I think that rogue had lost touch of his animal side.
My gaze dropped on the book lying atop my bag. It was the same book Genessa was reading yesterday. I kept the book in the bag and decided to give it to her later.
Sighing, I stared at the sky which was a shade of blue and purple. The moon, like always, shone brighter than the millions of stars adorning the sky. Please give me my mate back, I prayed quietly. It has been five days since I have last seen Templar. Five fucking days!
I missed her so much. My wolf was whining, growling, pacing or just lying down inside me. There wasnât any kind of pain. Nothing!
I didnât feel anything from the bond. There was also no response from Templar. It usually happens either when Templar is sleeping or Templar is connecting to the Goddess. Given the situation, the case of former happening is more likely than the latter.
Placing a hand on my abdomen, I tightly pressed it. There wasnât any kind of pain at all. But the horror of the pain I felt yesterday was still in my mind. I couldnât figure out what it was but my wolf certainly did because every time I thought about it, he would make a mewling sound and howl loudly in pain. He would then sit quietly and tears would roll from his eyes. My wolf never, ever cried before and I was shocked to feel that pain. His behavior crushed me.
I gulped and blinked as I felt my vision getting blur. I pulled out a water bottle from the paper bag.
âMyron has reached the second address. He said he will call me if he finds anythingâ Terence said. I pulled out my cellphone that once again was dead due to battery shortage. I had forgotten to charge it in the petrol bank.
âHmmâ I sighed. âHow far are we from the third?â I asked.
âAbout two hours awayâ January replied as I was drinking the water.
Just then Terenceâs cellphone started ringing. âItâs Myronâ he said and answered the call. I tuned in to hear it.
âWe found herâ Myron said on the other end and immediately my wolf stood up. I snatched the phone away from Terenceâs hand.
âWhere is she? How is she?â I asked Myron, my tone anxious. My heart started thudding in my chest and my lips were already curving upwards.
âI have not seen her yet but I can swear its princess because of her scent. This is a village and the person treating her is not allowing us to go inside.â Myron replied with a growl.
âWho the hell is he?â I snarled furiously.
âI got the addressâ January said excitedly at the same time, checking her cellphone and quickly started swirling the car.
âI donât know but itâs⦠itâs like a clinic. He is not allowing us because we are not related to herâ Myron said hesitantly.
âI will be there soonâ
âCome soon. These wolves are⦠primitiveâ Myron said and I knew he was frowning on the other end.
âSee you thereâ I said before cutting the call. Lowering my head, I let out a breath and smiled happily. My wolf howled again and I stared out at the moon still visible in the sky.
I swear I could feel that the Goddess was smiling happily with me. I thanked her and handed Terence his cellphone.
I couldnât wait until I could see Templar for myself.
The place where Myron found Templar was called as Rose-Bud. It was in the interior parts of ThunderSky. A village, far away from the actual pack territory as well as the city. When we reached there it was close to nine thirty.
The roads were curvy since we were driving up a hill. Other than the SUV, I didnât find a single vehicle in the road. There werenât any houses either, until we reached the village. This place didnât even have bus stops or railways. I wondered how someone lives in a place like this.
My question was answered when I reached the village, where there was one single storey building, with rogues residing in them. There were atleast six or seven vehicles parked in front of that house. One shop, one clinic, one wood mill where I am sure all these rogues were working.
There werenât any woman at all in this place.
Swinging out of the car, I inhaled deeply. My wolf howled happily as Templarâs scent hit me after five days. In a flash, I reached Myron who was standing at the entrance of the clinic with Genessa and his pack members.
âInsideâ Myron stated before I could even ask him anything.
Climbing the stairs, I pushed the first door available where a man in his late thirties, was sitting behind a desk and writing something in a paper. As he looked up, I collided with his green-yellow color eyes which were much similar to tortoiseshell catâs eye color.
âWho are you?â he asked me, cocking one ebony color brow.
âEverett Green. My wife is hereâ I said and the man leaned back in his seat and narrowed his eyes suspiciously. âI can smell herâ I spoke through gritted teeth.
âI could smell your scent in her tooâ the man said giving me a wide smile. âAllow me to introduce myself, I am Dr. Jonathan. I also am the leader of the few wolves hereâ He said standing up and extending his hand, which I shook. âI will take you to your wifeâ he said and I nodded. âCan I know her name?â he asked innocently.
âTemplar.â I replied quietly. âWhere did you find her?â I asked him as I walked beside him while others followed us.
âIn the woods. Itâs about an hour from here. I always go there to bring medicinal leaves. She was lying on the ground, covered in blood and breathing profoundlyâ he said and I inhaled sharply. âSomeone terribly hurt that girl, there was scratch mark on her arms, face.â he said shaking his head in sympathy and I clenched my fists while January growled from behind. âShe was unconscious and my friends were very helpful in bringing her hereâ he continued as we walked on the lengthy hallway.
There were two other patients in this clinic.
He then paused and pushed open a door to his right. Templarâs scent was strongest there. The lights of the room where switched off but I still made out her form lying on the bed.
Jonathan went and switched on the light and there she was, my Templar, peacefully sleeping on the bed, with a blanket wrapped around her waist.
Looking at her, after so many days, I let out a breath of relief and closed my eyes.
âTemplarâ I whispered and closed the distance between us.
My wolf whined as I held her hand in mine. I nestled my nose on her palm and breathed deeply, taking in her exquisite scent. My wolf closed his eyes and sighed merrily.
I ran my eyes all over her body to make sure that there wasnât a single scratch in her body.
âTemplarâ January said with a chuckle but there were tears in her eyes.
âShe hasnât woken up yet?â I inquired, tucking a strand of her dark hair behind her ears.
âNo. The girl is unconscious from four days. I expect her to wake up by tomorrow eveningâ¦.â
âOr else?â Myron, who was standing next to Terence near the foot of the bed, asked Jonathan.
âThere are chances of her going to coma for quite a long timeâ Jonathan whispered and I turned my head to face him. âShe has lost a lot of bloodâ he reasoned and I gulped. Please donât. Please donât do this to my Templar. I prayed to the Goddess.
âShe smells differentâ Genessa said all of a sudden and I turned to frown at her. âSomething is wrongâ she mumbled suspiciously. I glared at her because there wasnât any change in Templarâs scent.
âYes.â Jonathan said and once again I whirled my head to look at him. âI am really sorry to say this but we couldnât save your child Mr. Greenâ Jonathan added and right at that moment, after hearing that dreaded announcement, I just felt like someone shot right through my heart with a gun. Beside me, I heard sharp intakes of breath from others.
I froze in shock and let go of the hold I had in Templarâs hand. My wolf once again howled loudly in pain and I finally understood what the pain that he felt yesterday afternoon was. He whimpered continuously and then tears dripped from his eyes.
My heart pounded in my chest and I gulped to keep my face expressionless.
A child?
A pup. Our pup.
Part of me. Part of Templar. Except, itâs no more.
âShe had lost so much blood, it was impossible for us to save the child. We tried our bestâ Jonathan continued completely unaware that what he said was news to us.
âPregnantâ January whispered in shock. That caught Jonathanâs attention and he stopped talking.
âYes.â He said staring at her in confusion.
âHow many weeks?â January asked shakily as I stared at the floor, while goosebumps appeared on my skin due to fear.
âI⦠I thought you, you were awareâ Jonathan said uncertainly.
âThey werenâtâ I heard Myron saying.
âOhâ Jonathan said and there was a lengthy pause before he replied, âEight weeksâ I closed my eyes. A tear dropped from my eyes and I immediately turned to face Templar. âI am sorry. I really thought you knew about itâ he added helplessly. Jonathanâs tone clearly indicated that he too was in shock, just like me. Shock maybe because he thought, I knew Templar was pregnant.
I felt hollow, at a loss, because I couldnât believe what had happened in a week. My mind was not operating at all.
I noticed that my own hands were shaking as I held Templarâs hands in mine. There was this sudden fear surrounding me and I recalled the dream that I had a few days ago. The hand that was pressed against her stomach.
Our baby.
Our baby was gone.
âRettâ Terence called placing a hand on my shoulder.
âPlease leaveâ I mumbled shakily and without any further protest they all left the room. I closed my eyes and shed all those unshed tears I have been holding for five days.
Placing a chaste kiss on Templarâs knuckles, I took a deep breath to calm myself. My wolf folded his limbs, curled himself and then lowered his head. That is what I wanted to do right now, but I also wanted to hold Templar in my hands and soothe her. I donât know if she was aware or not of the baby.
However, I believed she wasnât aware.
I gently brushed my thumb on her cheek and let my eyes travel over her slender body. I swallowed audibly as I saw her flat as ever stomach. I was afraid that if I placed a hand on it, then it might hurt her.
As I glanced at her, I realized that the wounds Jonathan mentioned were no longer there. I was glad to see that her skin was flawless as ever. However still, her body underwent a major change.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I took a deep breath and stood up from my seat. I walked towards the window of the room and stared at the moon.
Oh Yes!
She did give me my mate back, but she took my child away from me. How could she take away my child?
My child.
My flesh and blood.
My wolf snarled aggressively and stood up in anger.
I straightened my spine and clenched my fists. Growling murderously, I walked out of Templarâs room. I found the person I was looking for in the hallway talking with Myron.
Holding Jonathan by his collar, I pushed him against the wall.
âWho. Hired. You?â I snarled viciously.
âI donât know-â he groaned in pain as I banged his head against the wall.
âWHO HIRED YOU?â I roared and Jonathan flinched. My wolf made an appearance and stood at the forefront, controlling all my actions. âGIVE ME THE NAMEâ
âI really donât und-â
âIf for one second you think that I will believe that fake story of yours, then you are highly mistakenâ I bellowed. âIf you want see the early morning sun, then give me the nameâ
âEverettâ Myron called from behind. However I didnât pay any attention to him.
âNobody. Nobody. I swear. I found her in the woods. She-â
âSTOP LYINGâ I shouted. âJust stop.â I breathed heavily but still didnât let go of the hold I had on Jonathan. âI know you are involved in this. Are you the leader or are you just another pawn?â I questioned.
âAlpha, I⦠donât know. I am not involved. No⦠no one hired meâ
âI SAID STOP LYINGâ
âEverettâ Myron shouted from behind me. âLet him go. He isnât involved in thisâ
âHe is. Do you seriously expect me to believe that he miraculously found Templar while going hunting for fucking medicinal plants?â I shouted glaring at the nasty creature I was strangling. âThen he treats her and she loses my child.â I growled aggressively. âHE. KILLED. MY. CHILDâ I thundered.
Jonathan surprised me by saying, âYes, I did.â I was shocked to hear him say that, but after that rage filled inside me and once again, I banged his head against the wall. Jonathan flinched and groaned. Gulping, he opened his eyes and looked at me. âI did kill your baby and I will regret that for the rest of my life. I did try my best to save the mother but the child I couldnât, because the heartbeat was very slow when we brought her here.â I loosened the hold I had on his collar. âShe had lost so much blood, her pulse was slow and she was already bleeding when we brought her here. My guess, someone must have deliberately punched her in the stomachâ he said and I took a step back and gulped. âYour child was fighting for his or her life until finally, it gave up. The fetus heart stopped beating yesterday and there was nothing I could have done to stop it. I did kill the baby because I did remove it from her body. I had no choice because she would have died if I didnât take it out.â I inhaled sharply as my wolf whimpered in pain.
No.
Nothing should happen to my Templar.
âI only wish I had gone to get the plants a little early than usual. I wish so many things that I could change but nothing is in my hands. I am only a doctor, not Goddessâ he whispered staring at his feet and I looked away. âAt the end, I convinced myself that everything in this world happens as and how the Goddess choses it to happenâ he added and I winced.
My wolf retreated and I gulped again.
âDoctorâ January called precariously and Jonathan looked up. âCan Templar b-become a mother again?â I forgot how to breathe after hearing her question. My heart pounded in my chest and the minutes I waited for Jonathan to answer the question were the longest minutes in my life.
Jonathan gulped before answering, âYes, of course.â He cleared his throat and added, âBut she should wait for a couple of months.â
Letting out a breath of relief, I nodded and walked away.
I woke up when I heard footsteps. Growling, I raised my head, pushed back the chair and marched towards the door.
As I opened the door, I saw a wolf, who was one of the patients here, drinking water from the water purifier. As he sensed me, he turned to look at me. He looked about my dadâs age. Glaring, I went back inside my room and closed my eyes.
I sat on my seat, next to Templarâs bed. Tucking a strand of her dark brown hair behind her ears, I leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
âWake up, babyâ I whispered closing my eyes and resting my forehead against hers. âPleaseâ I begged.
Swallowing, I leaned back and held her hands in mine. It was then I noticed that her wedding ring was no longer on her finger. Frowning, I decided to ask Jonathan to return it later.
I was sure he was the one who took it.
Letting go of Templarâs hand, I turned to check the time, from my watch, which I had kept in the bedside table. As I noticed it was close to six in the morning, I inhaled sharply.
Getting up, I went to bathroom to freshen up.
While I returned, I connected to Terence and frowned when I realized it was blocked. I guess he was sleeping.
I walked towards the window and stared at the moon, present in the light blue color sky. The stars had already disappeared because the sun, which had yet to make it complete appearance, rose a few minutes ago.
âYou have already taken my pup from me, but please donât take my mate. I cannot live without herâ I begged staring at the bright moon in the sky. At that precise moment, I heard a crack from the branch of a tree.
I let out a chuckle and stared at the Goddess in the sky. She really had weird ways of replying.
Taking my seat next to Templarâs bed, I took my cellphone and checked the inbox to see the messages I had in there.
I had just opened my dadâs message when Templar whimpered. The cellphone dropped from my hand as I stood up, âTemplarâ I called and looked at her hopefully.
Her eye lids scrunched up before she opened it slowly to reveal dark brown irises.
