âIn three words I can sum up everything Iâve learned about life: it goes on.â
-Robert Frost
ONE YEAR LATER
TEMPLAR P.O.V
âSHE stared out of the window overlooking the crowded city. Her son was here. She just knew it. He was here in one of those buildings. She could feel him calling for her, asking her to come and rescue him.
She hadnât seen him since the last three days. Tears clouded her vision as she imagined him being kept in a dark room. He was scared of darkness. A tear rolled down her cheek, as she imagined him lying in the corner of the room and crying. How scared must her baby be?
She closed her eyes and let the tears flow.
Opening her eyes, she once again stared at the city. She knew her son was here and it gave her enough confidence to surface from her emotional torment.
No. She wouldnât waste her time, sitting in the room and crying. She would go out and look for her son in this crowded city, where everyone was a stranger to her.â
I stopped reading and soon the audience started clapping. A smile crept on my face as I saw the small crowd gathered at the bookstore for the launch of my fourth book, âSINGLE MOMâ.
âBeautifulâ Molly, who was also the host of the even said and I smiled at her. âThat was really beautiful Sarahâ she said and then asked the audience to ask any questions if they wanted to.
The next twenty minutes we had a Q&A. Questions ranged from personal to the ones related to my books. After that Molly, thanked the folks for attending the book launch. I went and personally thanked and said goodbyes to the attendees.
âThat went wellâ Norman Cahill, Kateâs husband and the manager of my publishing company said handing me a glass of drink.
âI know rightâ Molly agreed sitting beside me. âThank-you so much for choosing me to be the host of this eventâ she said with a smile. âWas I bad?â she asked me and I shook my head.
âYou were greatâ I told her genuinely with a smile. âThe audience loved youâ
âAww, Thank-you. I am glad you-â she stopped talking all of a sudden and I knew she was talking to someone through the link.
âWhatâs wrong?â Norman asked Molly.
âNothing. Itâs almost eight and Ben said he would come to pick me up at eightâ she said getting up.
âAlrightâ Norman said and I stood up to hug Molly.
âWho is coming to pick you?â Molly queried me through the link.
âI am going alone. Say hi to Ben, okay?â I told her and she nodded.
âWeâll be coming home next weekendâ she said cheerfully and I smiled. Ben and Molly shifted into town almost five months earlier. Both got a job in town and since it was quite far to do up and down daily, they shifted into town. However, they would visit us once in a month.
After Molly left, I turned to face Norman but stood frozen in my spot as I spotted Normanâs daughter in his lap. Guilt enveloped me as I saw his daughter. She was a photo copy of Kate, who was killed by Alisha last year.
âHi Sarah, this is my daughter Lillianâ he said and the little girl turned to face me. The little girlâs bright green eyes lit up as she gave me a cute smile that tugged at my heartstrings. I felt really bad that this little girl, who looked around ten years old, had lost her mother at such a young age.
âHi Lillianâ I said with a smile and pinched her cheeks playfully. âHow old is she?â
âNineâ Norman said and I gulped.
âYou write stories?â she asked me and I nodded. âMy mummy used to read your stories but she never let me read it. She had said that she would give it to me only after I grow up but now she is goneâ she said and I sucked in a breath. My face turned pale and I blinked repeatedly.
Even though I was not the one who killed Kate, I still couldnât help but feel guilty about it since I was connected to the reason why she was murdered.
âI will give you the books after you grow upâ I said shakily and the little girl smiled again.
âPromise?â she asked me and I nodded. âThanksâ she said and turned to face her father, who smiled sadly. Lillian continued to talk to her father, completely unaware that he had turned an ashen shade ever since the mention of his late wife. But then, Norman looked at his daughter and something flashed in his eyes. It was so strong that all of a sudden his whole pallor changed and he was smiling brightly again.
I watched amazed at the change in his features. One moment, he was a heart-broken widower and the next a jovial father. I wondered how he gets so much strength and prayed that the Goddess constantly gives him that same strength.
âSarahâ Normanâs voice interrupted me from my thoughts and I shook my head.
âIâm sorry what?â I asked him confused.
âI asked do you need a ride home.â
âUhâ¦. No. I brought my carâ I told him and he nodded. âLetâs go, itâs already late and itâs a school night for Lillianâ I said and then we walked out of the library.
I had just pushed open the main door and treaded down the stairs when a black Pagani came to a halt in front of me. I stopped in my tracks and held the skirt of my red gown in my fists.
My eyes widened and my mouth dropped open in surprise as I locked gazes with Everettâs pacific blue eyes. My wolf howled happily inside me and I realized that Everett really was here. âWhatâ¦.?â I whispered totally confused.
He winked and gave me his trademark smirk as a reply.
âSarahâ Norman called and I looked at him. âAre you alright?â he asked rushing towards me, along with Lillian.
âYesâ I nodded and looked at Rett through narrowed eyes. What is he doing here, now, when he wasnât supposed to be home for another week?
âLetâs goâ he said.
âUh⦠You guys go. My husband is hereâ I said and Norman turned to face Everett.  Oh yes! We got married seven months ago right in front of our pack temple.
Both men exchanged an awkward smile before Norman left with his daughter. I shook my head and climbed to sit in the passenger seat.
âSurprise, surpriseâ Everett said as I closed the passenger door.
âWhat about your âvery importantâ work?â I asked sarcastically not looking at him. Yeah! Turns out Everett moving into my pack was not as easy as either of us thought. The difficult part wasnât handing over his pack responsibilities, it was his business. Since the base of his business was Greenrock, it was one hell of a tough job shifting it to Waterwave.
There was still some problems and hence he had to go every now and then to Greenrock. The worst part neither of us knows how long it will continue like this.
âI took a small breakâ he said and judging by the tone of his voice, I knew he was amused.
âOh Wow! I thought nothing came between you and your businessâ I snapped harshly.
âExcept for youâ he said candidly and my wolf sighed dreamily. Stupid female, I tell you!
A blush crept up on my face and I turned to look out the window because I didnât want Rett to notice it.
We drove in silence the rest of the way. I knew it was not Everettâs fault. Shifting a base of business to a new location was not an easy job and Everett was doing this for me, but I couldnât help but feel lonely whenever he was gone. I had to stay alone in our house whenever he was gone and I didnât like it. My wolfâs constant whine wasnât helpful either. She just doesnât understand what his work is.
Rett, is the current Alpha of the Waterwave pack and I am the Luna, though nobody calls me that. But since Rett has to constantly go to Greenrock, I manage Alpha duties, just like I did before.
I was brought out of my thoughts when Everett brought the car to a halt. âWe are hereâ he said and I climbed out of the car and went inside our house.
Everett really isnât the person who could stay in apartments. He likes to own an independent house, with big room, wide patio, a garden and several trees in the yard, own pool and a very long driveway. He was getting claustrophobic, in my room in the pack house, and within two weeks of us shifting here, he started designing a new house. We moved into this house, three months ago and before that Everett and I used to live in Mike, Januaryâs fatherâs beach house.
I was climbing up the stairs when suddenly an arm wrapped around my waist. Rett hauled me closer to his perfect body and I closed my eyes. âI missed youâ he whispered right next to my ears and place a chaste kiss on the spot right below my earlobe.
Goosebumps appeared all over my body and I turned to face Rett. âI missed you tooâ I accepted reluctantly.
He smiled and then lowered his head. As soon as his lips touched mine, I felt all the sadness slowly fading away and desire emerging. And at that moment, desire is what I wanted. I wrapped my arms around his neck and clutched a fistful of his hair.
Soon, there was a trail of clothes leading to our bedroom.
Half-an-hour later, I lay in Everettâs arms, weak and completely satisfied.
âWhatâs wrong?â Everett asked holding my chin with his fingers and compelling me to look at him.
âNothingâ I said with a shrug. I was happy he was here with me butâ¦.
âItâs somethingâ he said with a frown. âSomething is wrong. What happened at your book release? Did anyone make a nasty comment?â he asked me with a growl and I shook my head.
âI am fine, reallyâ I said with a humorless chuckle. âThe book release went fine and I hope this one will be a success tooâ I said quietly.
âItâll be. But that is not bothering you. What happened?â he asked gazing at me intently, his pacific blue eyes piercing my soul.
Soon my eyes got filled with tears and I gulped. âI saw Kateâs daughter todayâ I said and Everett patiently waited for me to continue. âI feel horribly guilty. Knowing the reason for her death but unable to tell that little girl soâ I said and sniffed. âShe is only a child with big innocent green eyes.â
âItâs not your faultâ he said soothing me.
âI know. I didnât kill the girlâs mother but I canât deny that I am connected to the reason for her murderâ I said and then rested my head against Everettâs forehead and let the tears flow.
âJust because you are connected to the reason doesnât make you Kateâs murderer.â Everett said and I looked at him. âWhen a building collapses due to storm, you cannot blame the earth for not holding it upright. Understood?â he asked me and I nodded. âNot your faultâ he soothed.
âThank-youâ I whispered and closed my eyes.
âWhat do you mean, she is not here? I can bloody smell herâ I heard Jan, my best friend, yell downstairs and I groaned.
Not again!
Everett and January just canât be in the same room as each other, without arguing. It starts with snide remarks and ends with me or Terence dragging either one of them out.
I think their stars just donât match!
âGet out of my house. I donât want to hear your shrieking early morningâ Everett snapped at her.
âThis is my best friendâs house too and I am not going anywhere until I meet her. Now you get out of my way, you are blocking airâ she launched back. I got up from the bed and picked up a long T-shirt from the closet.
âTerence, get your ass here right now and take this thing back to wherever it-Holy shit! Are you insane?â Everett roared furiously and I rushed downstairs. I was pleased to see that Everett had picked our clothes from the floor and kept it inside.
âThatâs what you get for calling me a thingâ Jan retorted. âGood Morning Tem. This Rhinoceros told me you werenât in the houseâ she said accusingly and I frowned at Everett.
âWhat? You needed rest and she will not allow itâ Everett said defensively and I rolled my eyes heavenwards.
âI am fine. Just a little tiredâ I said and sat on the couch.
âHow was the book release yesterday?â Jan asked me curiously. Jan got a job in a very famous fashion magazine and she was constantly called to for some photo shoot. Yesterday she had to go to one such photo shoot.
âGreat. The audience was good. Very encouragingâ I said with a cheerful smile. âWhat brings you early morning here?â I asked curiously. I knew well and good that Jan, like me, was not a morning person.
âNothingâ she said and I narrowed my eyes. âReallyâ she said to convince me.
âPlease. You are trouble with a capital Tâ Rett scoffed and Jan immediately turned to glare at him.
âJanâ I called and she looked at me, her green eyes bright with excitement.
âOkay. I went to Lukaâs room to play with him and he was asleepâ she said in a how-could-he-be-asleep tone. âSo I jiggled his tiny feetâ she said giggling.
âVery niceâ I said sardonically and Rett shook his head. Luka was Sveta and Camâs six months old son.
âHe woke up cross and then, started to cryâ she said with a grimace. âBefore Sveta could find me, I ranâ she added proudly. âNow you have to give alibi to Sveta that I was here since six in the morning. Okay?â
âAnd why would I do that?â
âUmâ¦. Because you love meâ she said in a duh tone and I rolled my eyes.
âIdiotâ I muttered smiling at her. Sveta will be pissed. Luka was a very demanding child who slept only a handful of hours.
âThank-youâ she said loudly and gave me a tight hug, but quickly pulled away as her gaze fell on Everett. âHe wouldnât tell her, would he?â she asked frowning at him.
âAlready didâ Rett said with a chuckle and Jan growled loudly.
âYou bloody rhinocerosâ¦.â She snapped and got up to chase after him.
I leaned back in my seat and laughed as Rett threw a pillow at Janâs face. They were running around the house, but stopped when Cam came into view along with Terence and Keith, who was also holding a crying Luka in his arms. Jan stopped all of a sudden, her green eyes wide as she saw Cam.
âCome hereâ Cam, who is the third-in-command of Waterwave pack, said calmly to Jan, who shook her head.
âI didnât do it.â she said shaking her head. âHe is lyingâ she said pointing her index at Rett.
Keith, who is the Beta of my pack, quickly came towards me and passed Luka who was sobbing inconsolably. âI donât know why they call these things cuteâ he said in dismay, sitting on the couch and placing his hands on his ears.
âOh babyâ I fussed, looking at the mammoth size tears overflowing from his big eyes. Luka clung to me and continued sobbing, while I rocked him gently. Luka, with his loud cry, could wake up the whole household.
âGood Luck! You are going to be having one soonâ Terence, my brother, said to Keith with a smirk. Trudy was six months pregnant now and her due date is on the second week of next month.
Unlike humans, a she-wolf will carry her child in the womb for only seven months.
âHe hasnât stopped cryingâ Cam said looking at his own son in distress. âAnd Sveta asked me to take him outâ he said as I gently rubbed Lukaâs back.
âGive him to meâ Jan said extending her hand. She scooped Luka up and then playfully lifted the little boy who loved the attention. Soon, Luka flaunted a smile and everyone in the room, including me was relieved that the little boy flashed one of his rare smiles. âSee⦠he loves meâ Jan said kissing Lukaâs cheeks.
Despite her naughtiness, Jan was terrific with babies. Way better than me.
âYeah, he does. Thatâs why I asked you to hold himâ Cam said with a smirk, gently holding Lucaâs head.
âHow is Trudy?â I asked Keith who was staring at Luka like he was an alien.
âGood. She sent me last night to get black grapes for herâ Keith said pouting and I laughed as he rested his head on my shoulders. Trudy had some rare cravings during her pregnancy. Last week, she wanted to have coconut ice-cream. Right now, Trudy, my sister, and Keith, her mate, were living together in a separate house. Both werenât interested much in the concept of marriage so they are not going to get married.
It is accepted in our world. Some of us get married because we believe it gives a new name to our relationship.
âAww⦠You got it?â I asked him with a smile.
âYes. She was asleep by the time I returned homeâ he said gloomily. I bit my bottom lip and shook my head in mock sympathy.
âSucks to be youâ Jan said sitting beside Keith, after Cam left with a now calm Luka.
âI thought he wasnât about to return until another weekâ Keith pointed out looking at Rett, who was talking to Terence.
âHe took a breakâ I said with a shrug, hoping he wouldnât notice the blush creeping its way in my face.
Unfortunately for me, he did and he cocked an eyebrow. âDonât do thatâ I snapped the moment his eyebrow went up. I still donât know how to do it and I still get angry when anyone cocks a single eyebrow in front of my face.
âYou mean this?â he asked deliberately lifting another brow and I growled.
âAssâ I commented while he laughed at me. He stopped laughing and suddenly got up, âTrudy is callingâ with that said, Keith took his leave.
âOkay! Iâve to go. Got to get ready for workâ Jan said yawning and then she went away along with Terence.
âThat was some morningâ Rett murmured sitting beside me in the couch. âYour friend has the worst timing everâ he said leaning his head backwards. I leaned closer to him and closed my eyes.
âOkayâ¦. Just concentrate. Now slowly raise it upwardsâ Rett said to me.
âI am concentratingâ I snapped. âBut itâs not happeningâ I growled.
âThatâs because you are not concentrating properlyâ We were in our room, lying on our stomach in the bed, where Rett was teaching me how to raise an eyebrow. âNow, donât take your eyes off your eyebrows. Come on, you can do itâ
âOkayâ I whispered staring at my eyebrow using the make-up mirror. âGo upâ I said glaring at the eyebrow. My eyes started to flood because of strain. âUpâ I whispered. âFuck you! Stupid eyebrowâ I barked when it didnât go up. âI canât believe you are mineâ I said furiously glaring at my eyebrows.
âI give upâ Rett sighed beside me. âI guess itâs not your giftâ he said wiping the tears rolling down my eyes. âNot everyone can do itâ he said with sympathy when I used my hand to raise the eyebrow.
âSadâ I said with a pout. Just then my cellphone started ringing. I climbed out of the bed and looked around, until I spotted it in the dressing table.
âHi princessâ Myron greeted me as soon as I took the call. Rett growled as he heard Myronâs voice.
âHiâ I said with a smile, ignoring Rett. âHow are you? Long time, no callâ I said and Myron sighed. Myron, my friend, is the Alpha of Firelight Pack.
âBeen fine⦠Just busy with pack dutiesâ he mumbled and I frowned.
âEverything alright?â I asked in worry and even Rett looked at me with concern.
âYes, it is. Just the trackers in our pack spotted rouges scentâ he said.
âHeading?â
âNot your pack, but Whitefieldâ he said and I inhaled sharply. Whitefield Pack shared itâs border with the Waterwave as well as the Firelight.
âYou called their Alpha?â I asked.
âYes. I did inform Sebastian⦠But that is not why I called youâ Myron said and I furrowed my brows. âI called to ask whether you guys are celebrating temple fest during eclipse.â
âHold onâ¦â I said and looked at Rett, who shook his head in refusal.
âNo, we are notâ I said to Myron.
âOkay. Good! Because we are and even though Iâll invite you officially later, but still you all are invited. Also, I need some wolves from your pack for guard duty that dayâ he said and I immediately agreed.
There will be a solar eclipse occurring next month and every year, solar eclipse is celebrated with pomp and show in Firelight pack mainly because Patricia, the former white wolf, was born from the energy of eclipse.
âThanks a lot princess, Iâll-.â He said but I cut him off.
âAbout the roguesâ I began, âYour pack wolves, did they see how many there were?â I asked curiously.
âNo and I doubt those rogues want to attack. I think they were just passing through because if they were attacking, then we would have gotten the news by nowâ he said and I sighed. âI will inform you if anything happens, okay?â he said.
âAll rightâ I said and then he cut the call.
I turned to face Everett and smiled. âRelax, if there is anything serious, Sebastian and even Myron will inform usâ he said and I nodded.
âDonât know⦠I just⦠I thought all rogues are extinct species, butâ¦.â I trailed off with a frown. I honestly thought rogues, even if they are, wouldnât try to attack other packs because I had killed Glen, the most powerful rogue last year.
âThere are few left⦠here and thereâ he said and I nodded. âAlso, wolves who donât like to follow their leaders too will leave the pack and become roguesâ he added.
âI know⦠but⦠I am just getting a bad feeling about thisâ I said and Rett got up from the bed and walked towards me. He wrapped his arms around me and placed his chin on the top of my head.
âThey will not stand a chance against usâ he whispered and I nodded. âI will ask the guards to be alertâ he said lowering his head and placing a kiss on the beauty spot right below my lower lip. I chuckled as he did that.
âOkayâ I said with a sigh. I really didnât want to go through all the things which I went, for nearly five years of my life, while hunting for Glen. The pack was living a happy and peaceful life and I liked it that way.
No.
Nothing will happen to my pack. I will not let anything happen.
I chuckled and pulled away, âMaybe I am just simply worryingâ I said to Rett. âI mean, the rogues that are left arenât any harm either way because Ryker is deadâ I said flatly.
âWhat about his family?â Rett asked me and I gave him a confounded look.
âHis family?â I parroted. âI donât think he has any family left. I heard about his father, but there were also news that he died about four years ago.â I said and Rett nodded. âWhile we were hunting for the other rogues, I had detailed search about the Ryker clan and there was Ryker, his father and an uncle left, who was his dadâs brotherâ
âWhat about this uncle?â
âI donât remember his name now, but all I know was that he was the one taking care of Glenâs father. Besides, I donât think they are of any problem because they donât live here and itâs been a year and even now they havenât caused any problems to usâ I pointed out.
âI will have this uncle checked outâ he said, nodding unsurely.
âKeith has the file which has their informationâ
âI will ask himâ Rett growled and then once again, pulled me closer to his chest. âWhatever the truth is, Iâll not rest until I find it outâ he said gently running his hands through my hair. âAnd if these rogues try anything, then theyâll payâ he said witt another growl and my own wolf growled back in affirmation.
âWe will get through all of thisâ he said and I craned my neck to look at him.
âWe will?â I asked looking at his pacific blue eyes that had turned dark.
âWe willâ he replied with a growl.
