Chapter 6
An Encounter for a Lifetime
Embarking on a new season in his life, Kanan stepped into the unknown after thoughtful contemplation. Though the path he chose was not devoid of uncertainty, he plunged forward with a clear sense of purpose. The decision carried the weight of what he lost. It was a morning when Kanan woke to a haze of uncertainty that lingered in the corners of his mind. As he reached for his journal, "Life Adventures: All or Nothing," the weight of contemplation settled upon him. The pages, filled with adventures he had yet to experience, made him question, "Is it worth it?" In the quiet moment, doubt crept in, casting a shadow over his aspirations. Kanan promised himself that he wouldn't fall into the depths of such emotions, but even a promise is a comfort to a fool. It was only a moment of thought; even a moment holds power. He could only give his best, aspiring not to sink but to rise above the challenges.
"Argh," He bellowed, frustration echoing through the room. It was no use sitting on his couch like this. He had a full day ahead of him, thankful Nathaniel kept him on his toes. They had scheduled the fitting at lunch that demanded his presence. Nathaniel sent the necessary details via text.
Dressed in black cargo pants and a white T-shirt and shoes, he was going for comfortable and casual, not feeling like dressing up today. Choosing to head out early to avoid potential traffic, he aimed to arrive sooner than he did during their initial, or rather, second, encounter. The drive was smooth, and their meeting spot was a few minutes from The View. Parking with time to spare, Kanan found himself a few minutes ahead of schedule, texting Nathaniel to ask if he was on his way. To his surprise, Nathaniel stated that he was already inside.
The small store before him operated as a tailor shop, offering custom tailoring and alterations services, and a suit shop, where customers purchased ready-made suits. The decor featured dark wood furnishings complemented by modern fixtures, creating an air of refined simplicity. Neatly organized racks and displays showcase a diverse collection of suits at accessible price points, and mannequins showcase the latest suit collections. An area dedicated to fabric swatches conveys a sense of customization. Carefully positioned mirrors provide customers with the opportunity to admire the tailored craftsmanship.
"Hey," Nathaniel greeted him, seated in a chair adjacent to the counter. Behind it were shelves holding swatches of fabric, measuring tapes, and neatly arranged tools
A man, seemingly in his thirties, casually leaned against the counter, his gaze shifting from Nathaniel to Kanan. Kanan offered his greetings, mindful of his manners. Stepping out from behind the counter, the man extended his hands with a welcoming smile, "I'm Evan, the owner," He introduced himself.
"Kanan," He greeted, completing Evan's handshake.
"Nathaniel mentioned your appreciation for the suits. I'm pleased to hear you liked them."
"Such craft deserves to be appreciated," Kanan sensed a contrast in attire. His casual choice of outfit, though comfortable, stuck out amongst Evans's white chinos, black button-down shirt, as well as Nathaniel's sophisticated tan suit.
Evan's smile widened. "Nathaniel bought the suit with him. The fitting room is at the back. Feel free to get change, and we'll proceed from there."
Kanan went to the back as directed. In the fitting room was the suit he selected, a white dress shirt, and a pair of shoes. Evan explained to him the reasoning behind the additional garments. To provide a realistic representation of how the suit looks and feels, ensure accuracy in achieving a well-fitted final result. To see how the suit interacts with the rest of his outfit. He valued Evan's efforts in ensuring he comprehended the process, which eased his nerves during his first fitting. Suits weren't a regular part of Kanan's lifestyle, and his store-bought ones happened to fit him just right without any tweaks. The process was short, with minor details to be changed as previously intended.
"A tie would make it look better, wouldn't it?" His previous thoughts were changing. He wanted to enhance the overall polished look of the suit, making it more well-put-together and refined.
"Yes, If you're interested, we can explore different tie styles and colors to complement your suit perfectly," Evan told him.
Kanan's attention shifted, and his gaze lingered on Nathaniel, who observed silently watching the scene unfold before him. "What do you think?" Kanan wanted his opinion. The intensity of the look in his eyes was captivating, causing a lingering sensation that was hard to ignore.
"It's up to you, whatever makes you comfortable," Nathaniel told him. It wasn't what Kanan wanted to hear, and Nathaniel sensed it and continued, "It would be the icing on top of a tasty cake."
Kanan chuckled at his words. "I'll look at the ties," He said to Evan.
"Up for lunch after?" Nathaniel inquired as Evan headed off to pick out ties.
"Sounds good,"
The fitting was a breeze. In what felt like the blink of an eye, Evan displayed his expertise as each pin found its place, leaving an impression that felt swift and satisfying. As it wasn't an urgent matter and the adjustment was minor, Nathaniel agreed to collect the suit in the evening. Kanan thanked Evan, leaving with an admiration for his skills. A brief walk led to their lunch destination-a cozy cafe, smaller in size compared to the expansive Royal Brew Cafe. The lunchtime hustle and bustle was minimal.
"I'm buying," Kanan declared as they examined the menu, not forgetting what happened before. Nathaniel agreed without hesitation, selecting a chicken wrap. Kanan selected the same thing, paired with two iced teas. Seated at the outdoor table, they ate lunch, appreciating the pleasant weather.
"About my mother's gift," It was a topic that Kanan had wanted to bring to the surface but didn't dare to. "I thought about it, and I haven't the slightest clue what to get because I wasn't planning on getting her anything."
Kanan set aside his iced tea after taking a sip and replied, "From experience, my mom likes anything I buy her. You can take her interests and work from there. Anything she likes? Hobbies?"
"My mom and I aren't close," He said. "I can't say for certain." Kanan's phone rang, interrupting their conversation. "Go ahead."
It was Kaelan. "Kanan, do you know the hoodie I have in different shades of brown?" It was a hoodie that Kanan knew all too well because it was his. "Let's settle this once and for all. Isn't it the hoodie that you gave me as a gift? I don't remember when, but you did."
Ayana's voice joined in. "It's not. It's Kanan's hoodie that you've claimed as your own."
"She's right," Kanan told his brother. "That was my hoodie that I couldn't find, only to see you wearing it, and I just let you have it."
"Aha!" Ayana exclaimed in victory. "You owe me that necklace."
Kanan chuckled as he realized they made a bet. "Do I win something, too?"
"Take my side next time, even if you have to lie, then I'll buy you something," Kaelan said. "Anyway, that's why I called. Bye, traitor."
Kanan laughed. "Sorry, that was my brother. He made a bet with his girlfriend, and apparently, I held the answer to it."
"You seem close to your brother," Nathaniel commented. "Is he older or younger than you?"
"He's my younger brother and the only sibling I have," Kanan stated. "Do you have any siblings?" It became evident that family was a forbidden territory for Nathaniel. The subtle shift of expression presented itself often. His eyes reflected a hint of unspoken history as if the topic opened a vault of memories he dared not explore.
Nathaniel finally responded, "I have people that I share the same blood with." An awkward silence settled upon them. Kanan stuck between disbelief and the struggle to find the right words. Lips attempted to form sentences that refused to materialize. It was a shocking revelation. Kanan knew there were different family situations, and not everyone shared a bond like him and his brother. Yet, the sudden display of a broken relationship expressed in those words was unexpected. The struggle to find words intensified, losing the ability to navigate the conversation. "Way to end a conversation, Nathaniel."
"I'm just shocked," Kanan clarified, his words coming to life and thoughts sorted. "I get it; not every relationship can be perfect."
"Honestly," He adjusted himself in his seat. "My brother and I are far from close. They say hate is a strong word, but I can't help but use it." Kanan listened keenly to every word Nathaniel said. It was what he had hoped for, to get a little closer to him, put together the pieces of what dim the brightness in his eyes-A territory he didn't allow anyone to enter. "It was brief, but I can see how close you are to your brother. I wondered if I could've had that kind of bond, and I couldn't imagine it."
Imagining a relationship where he hated Kaelan saddened Kanan. The notion of harboring such emotions was unfathomable to him. He could never understand what Nathaniel felt, yet he was thankful that he could express himself freely. "I don't have the slightest clue about the relationship you have, but make decisions that prioritize your well-being and lead you to happiness no matter what anyone else thinks."
"You have got some crumbs on your top," Nathaniel reached over to dust them off. "And thank you."
"Way to embarrass yourself, Kanan." Laughter hid his embarrassment, and the smile didn't go unnoticed on Nathaniel's lips.
"Help me pick out a gift?"
"I'm all yours for the day."

In their respective cars, they drove to The View. LuxeGems Co., their targeted destination, is a luxurious jewelry store, as expected from the upscale ambiance of The View. The store's elegant interior creates an atmosphere of refined glamour. Soft, ambient lights enhance the allure of carefully arranged jewelry, from diamonds to rare-colored gemstones. Attentive staff standing ready to assist.
"Anything you have in mind?" Kanan asked, in hopes of making the selection easier.
"Something simple," Nathaniel answered. "How about a bracelet? What do you think?"
Kanan thought carefully. Despite Nathaniel's reluctance, there was genuine thought behind the selection as he examined the array of jewelry. Kanan recognized his need for some assurance as his uncertainty began to surface. Offering his support, he confidently replied, "I think it's a great choice."
Nathaniel selected two dainty bracelets adorned with a small gem on the front to have a closer look. Moving closer to take a look, Kanan recognizes the subtly smell of rosemary amongst a sweeter scent. It was like back at the Royal Brew Cafè with hints of citrus and mint. It made Kanan wonder. The staff was kind enough to explain the significance of each gemstone, offering a better understanding and insight into each gem and enhancing the overall experience and selection. He opted for a deep blue gem, a third option, and he found no need to delve into its meaning.
"For tomorrow, I think it'll be best to get ready from my house. What'd you say?" They stood in the parking lot. " Unfortunately, it's not that far from where I live."
Kanan had no objections. "I'll come by in the afternoon."
"Thanks for today," Nathaniel expressed as their time together was coming to an end.
"Thank you, too. I wasn't having the best morning, but I'm glad I came out of the house."
"Here I was, being the only one getting cheered on," Nathaniel chuckled. "Next time, let me be your cheer team. Return that comfort you've shown me."
"I could look forward to that."
