Chapter 37
Married To My Ex-Husband’s Rival by Jobet GraySon
Chapter Thirty Seven
Third Person POV
âSo, whatâs the plan, Richard? Now that weâre finally married, what is it you wanted from me that led you to help me?â Amber asked, her tone void of any sort of friendliness.
Last night, she had let go of her pride and had requested to speak to Richard after she noticed that he was upset with her. She had made it very clear that she wasnât going to take no for an answer, but much to her surprise, he ended up shutting the door in her face.
It had confused Amber so much that she barely slept through the night. No matter how hard she thought about it, she couldnât understand what she had said that warranted such behavior from him, and after how he had treated her the night before, she woke up telling herself that she no longer cared about his feelings.
She quickly reminded herself that he wasnât really her husband and that besides their shared enemy, nothing else joined them together.
âThis isnât entirely important, but just out of curiosity, how familiar were you with Kaydenâs work? Did you pay attention to his work, or were you shut out completely?â Richard asked, his stern expression mirroring hers.
Amber sighed. âWell, Kaydenâs not exactly the smartest person in the world, so getting information about the things he had planned and what he was up to wasnât entirely difficult. Also, like I told you at the office, he always talked to me about work because he needed my advice,â she explained.
âSo in other words, you know just enough, am I right?â Richard asked, and Amber nodded to confirm.
âGood. Since your divorce hasnât been that long ago, you must have heard about the 401 project, havenât you?â he asked.
âIsnât that the project under that recently retired colonel? Colonel Miller, if my memory serves me correctly, and if itâs supposedly going to be an apartment complex with exactly four hundred and one apartments, Amber responded, recalling that she had heard Kayden talking about the project a few weeks before everything went south.
âYes, thatâs the project Iâm talking about. If youâve heard Kayden talking about it, then that means

you must know how desperately he has tried to get the project to fall into his hands. Now, Iâm not very interested in that project because itâs not significant, and I donât like to work with corrupt
government officials, but for this one, I plan on taking it away from Kayden,â Richard explained.
âIs there a reason, or are you just determined to take every project he wants?â Amber asked, not sure if such a plan made sense in a longâterm way.
âIâm not a child, Amber. Even though there are times that we tend to pursue the same projects, Kayden
and I have very different tastes and doctrines when it comes to work. So, to clarify, Iâm not going
to steal it because I want it, Iâm going to steal it because Iâm aware of his ulterior motive for
wanting that project,â Richard explained.
Amber furrowed her brow in confusion, turning to face Richard with a perplexed expression. âI donât
understand. What could Kayden possibly want with this project?â
Richard took a deep breath, his eyes focused on a point in the distance as he contemplated his
response. âItâs not about the project itself, Amber,â he explained. âWhat Kayden is after is to
â« establish a connection with the real person behind the 401 apartment complex project.â
Amberâs confusion deepened. âBut who is this real person behind it? And why does Kayden want to
establish a connection?â
Richard sighed. âThe real person behind the project is a man named Karl Maxwell,â he revealed, his
voice barely above a whisper. âAnd why Kayden wants to connect with him is because Maxwell has
recently been announced as one of the candidates for the upcoming governorship election.â
Amberâs eyes widened in surprise, her mind reeling with the implications of Richardâs revelation. âWait, you mean this whole project is tied to politics? Thatâs why itâs such a big deal?â
Richard nodded solemnly. âExactly. The current figurehead for the project, Colonel Miller, is nothing
more than a puppet. Maxwell is using him as a shield, so he doesnât come off as a greedy politician
before the election is over.â
âSo, what does this mean for us? How does this help us hurt Kayden?â she asked..
âIf we want to break someone as confident as Kayden, we have to start by ruining his reputation.â Richard finally said. âBut it wonât be as fun if we do it in one go. We need to chip away at the
things he holds dear, the things he considers his own. Iâll make him see everything he wants and desires disappear in his face one by one, starting from this project that could help him finally

Amber scoffed, unable to hold back her disbelief. âSo, it started with me, didnât it?â she replied.
âThatâs why you married me, just to spite Kayden and take away something he owned?â
Richard turned to face her, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his l*ps. âWell, of course, that was one of the many insignificant reasons,â he admitted. âThereâs a certain satisfaction in knowing that Kayden would fume at the thought of me marrying his exâwife. But believe me, Amber, I
have much more in store for him than just marrying a woman he never loved.â
Amberâs eyes widened, shocked by Richardâs callous words. She struggled to comprehend why he had

express it so harshly, especially considering the delicate state he had found her in, and how fresh
the wound was.
Though her anger threatened to bubble to the surface, she clenched her fists, refusing to let Richard
see her riled up.
Keeping her voice steady, Amber pressed him further. âFine,â she said icily. âTell me, Richard, what role am I supposed to play in this plan of yours? How am I going to help you take the project away
from Kayden?â
Richardâs l*ps curled into a wicked smile as if he had been waiting for her question. âAll you need
to do is tap into the crazed, abandoned, and betrayed exâwife that you were just a few days ago,â he said. âBut this time, you need to take that side of you and show it to a man who is a sucker for
eccentric women.â
