âAmber, youâre playing with fire. You have no idea how dangerous Kayden Black truly is. Stop trying
to dig your own grave by messing with him,â Martin cautioned in response to my threat to send him to
jail.
I couldnât help but scoff at his caution, a mocking edge seeping into my tone as I folded my arms defiantly across my chest. âOh, please humor me, Father. Tell me, just how dangerous is this man that
you seem to fear so much? Is he a god? Some kind of demon?â I questioned, and the sarcasm in my tone
was evident.
Martinâs sigh was laden with frustration, his gaze pleading with me to understand. âI know you have
every reason to hate me, but donât try to threaten me into giving you evidence against Kayden. I
wonât put you in danger like that. Iâd never do that to my child,â he implored, his words heavy with
his own guilt and remorse.
Rolling my eyes at his plea, I cut through his words with a biting retort. âAs far as Iâm concerned,
Kayden is a criminal, and Iâm only asking you to hand over evidence of his illegal activities if you donât want to go to jail in his place. I didnât ask you to kill him for me, so stop being so
dramatic,â I asserted sharply, not bothering to mask my anger and resentment.
Martinâs expression softened with a mix of resignation and concern, his voice tinged with a desperate plea. âAmber, please come to your senses. Youâre married to a good, successful man now. An even
better man than Kayden Black. Why, then, would you worry about him and his affairs? You could be
putting yourself in great danger,â he repeated, sounding like a broken record.
Shaking my head in disappointment, I abruptly shifted the focus of our conversation, asking a question that had been on my mind for years now. âDo you still think of Mom, Father, or have you
completely forgotten her?â I asked, accusation lacing my words.
Martinâs confusion was palpable, his brow furrowing in bewilderment. âWhy bring up your mother all of a sudden, Amber?â he questioned.
Letting out a heavy sigh, I harshly responded, âAm I not allowed to ask, Father? It seems to me that
ever since you married Mary just two years after Momâs passing, youâve forgotten her completely.â

A deep frown creased Martinâs brow; his gaze was troubled and hurt. âDonât say what you donât know Amber. Youâre very wrong,â he countered, the pain in his voice almost making me laugh.
Burying his face in his hands for a fleeting moment, Martin raised his gaze to meet mine once again. âNot a day goes by that I havenât thought about Elena. Not one day, Amber,â his words heavy with emotion, a raw display of the grief he carried in him.
Disdain curled my l*p as I leveled a piercing gaze at him. âYouâre a liar, Father. Donât you dare pretend like youâve cared about Mom in years when you were so quick to marry another woman and y even work for the man who took her life?â I hissed, unable to contain my anger.
As I blurted out my words, Martinâs eyes widened in shock, a flicker of realization passing through his expression. âHow did you know? How did you find out who killed your mother?â he stammered, his voice tinged with disbelief and fear.
Rolling my eyes at his reaction, I scoffed before shooting back, âDid you know too, Father? Or have you just been cluelessly following the enemy like a lap dog?â
The sarcasm dripped from my words like venom, and the bitterness in my tone was a reflection of the disgust and disdain I felt deep inside.
Martinâs silence only fueled the fire of my anger, my frustration bubbling to the surface as I
harshly demanded, âDid you already know who killed Mom and still chose to work with him to make m marry him? Is that it, Father?â I questioned.
Another heavy sigh escaped Martinâs l*ps, his gaze haunted as he finally found his voice. âHow did you find out, Amber?â His question was barely a whisper, a tremor of fear lacing his words as he spoke.
Fury laced my response, the raw edge of my emotions cutting through the tension in the restaurant. âHow long have you known, Dad? How long have you known that Kayden, the bastard youâve been he wipe his d*rty ass, was responsible for killing your wife and my mother?â I demanded, the tremor of hurt and anger palpable in my voice.
Martin held up a placating hand, his voice strained as he implored me to calm down. âI know youâre hurt and confused right now, Amber, but you need to listen to me and calm down. I beg you,â he pleaded, and I couldnât believe it.
My eyes widened in shock and disbelief at his Indirect admission. âYouâve known all this time? Youâve

known the truth, and yet youâve worked for him, handled his d*rty business, and even forced me into a marriage with him. You watched me marry a murderer, and you said nothing
The questions spilled from my l*ps in a rush, the pain of betrayal branding deep into my heart like
never before.
With a heavy heart. Martin finally spoke, his voice laced with a mixture of regret and helplessness. âItâs not what you think, Amber. I never wanted you to find out because I knew it would break you, I didnât know if telling you would ever be the right thing to do because I didnât think you were strong enough to handle it.â he confessed.
I was struggling to comprehend the depth of his deception and his dumb excuse because nothing he had just said made any sense to me. âHow could you do this, Father? How could you work for a man like Kayden, knowing what he did to Mom? Why would you even do this? What kind of monster are you?â
Martinâs sigh was laden with sadness as he spoke, âI canât explain it to you now, Amber. There are things you donât understand, but please believe me when I tell you that things are not as they seem. Iâm not a monster like you think I am.â
I shook my head in disbelief. âYou need to answer my questions, Father. Clearly and honestly,â I demanded sternly.
âWhy did you agree to let me marry Kayden when his family suddenly offered an arranged marriage?â pressed, the questions tumbling from my l*ps with annoyance.
Martin let out a heavy sigh, his gaze clouded with regret as he spoke. âI accepted it because I didnât have a good enough excuse to reject the marriage,â he admitted.
My face contorted into a deep frown as I shot back, âWhat do you mean you didnât have a good excuse Father? Isnât his direct involvement in Momâs death more than a good enough reason to have stopped the marriage from happening?â
Shaking his head, Martin met my gaze with a pained expression. âAmber, you wouldnât understand, bu Iâm not going to make excuses, he murmured, his words heavy with his guilt and remorse.
His next words sent a chill down my spine and a wave of disbelief washing over me. âEven if I knew what Kayden did, he didnât know that I knew. If he had known that I knew about Elenaâs death and who killed her, he would have hurt our family. To protect everyone, Iâve had to play dumb all these years, Martin explained, the truth a bitter pill that I struggled to swallow.

I scoffed at his feeble attempts to justify his actions, the excuses falling on deaf ears. âYouâre just spouting useless reasons, Father. No amount of justification can erase the fact that youâve worked for the family of the man who killed your wife for twenty years,â I shot back, the anger lacing my voice.
Martin simply sighed before uttering words that cut deeper than any knife. âThink what you want, Amber. Iâll accept your hatred, but please donât involve yourself with Kayden and his affairs. You have no idea what heâs capable of. That man is not even human; he has no limits at all.â
With a bitter laugh, I rose from my seat, my purse clenched tightly in my hand. âKayden isnât some god I canât send to hell, so donât try to scare me, because it wonât work. Iâm not scared of that idiot,â I retorted. âAnd as for you, Martin, expect the worst because to me, youâre no different from him, and Iâll gladly send you to hell along with him,â I threatened.
And with that final declaration, I turned on my heel and walked out of the restaurant, leaving behind a father who had lost his first daughter for good now.
