Chapter 96
The Lord Mayor Falls in Love with Me
Mrs. Linderman face darkened and she stood up to open the door.
âMom...ah...â
The door opened. Joey looked up and her mother slapped her hard in the face.
âYou little ungrateful daughter and sister, get your ass in here.â
Joey was slapped by Vivian too. Vivian grabbed her arm, dragged her into the house and slammed the door.
âMom...â
Joey touched her burning face and looked at her mother in disbelief.
She was heartbroken. Her mother had punished her physically for many times since she was a little girl. But her mother had never slapped her so hard before. She found the expression on her motherâs face horrifying.
Vivian gloated over Joeyâs physical suffering. She shrugged and put on a provocative smile, âMy dear sister, I told you to give me the job and you wouldnât. Now this is what you deserve.â
Joey laughed silently and pitifully. She stared at her mother like a hurt animal, âI should know better than to believe that you would care about me.
You just pretended to care about me to get me back home and you hit me because youâve believed everything Vivian had told you. How could you be so partial?â
Mrs. Linderman frowned, âYou sister is younger than you and she needs an opportunity after graduation. As her sister, you despised her and refused to help her. I slapped you to remind you who Iâm. Iâm your mother.â
Joey shook her head. If Vivian had been nicer to her during the interview, she might have considered offering Vivian a lower-level position as a clerk in the company where she could work hard for future promotion. Unfortunately, Vivian had been too proud and ambitious to sit down and have a nice conversation with Joey.
Joey was confident that she had never owed anything to Vivian in the past. Besides, Vivian had been cheating with her fiancé. She believed it wouldnât be necessary for her to be nice to Vivian anymore.
âIt wasnât that I wouldnât give her the job. She isnât qualified enough for the job. Mom, youâre so partial.â
Joey slowly put her hand down, and stared at her mother with indifference. Now she was utterly disappointed with her sister and her mother.
âYouâre insane to speak to me in this way.â
Her mother was somehow guilty and angry at the same time. She raised her hand, trying to slap Joey again.
She was stopped before she could hit Joey this time.
âMom, as the saying goes, âwhen parents hit their children, they feel twice the pain in their own heartsâ, do you think it's true? Didnât you feel sorry for me when you slapped me?â
Joey looked at her mother in pain, âNever mind, I would be a fool if I hadnât realized how cruel youâve been to me in the past twenty-two years. Fine, I get it now. You did give me a good lesson. Are you happy now? Is there anything else I could do for you? Iâm leaving.â
Joey turned around indifferently and reached for the door.
Mrs. Linderman had never seen Joey so indifference. She froze for a moment.
Vivian quickly pushed her mother with anxiety, âMom, she is leaving. Youâve not told her about Ben and me.â
Mrs. Linderman finally remembered that there was something else more important to do today. She rushed to the door to stop Joey, took a small notebook out of her pocket and handed it to Joey, âItâs you and Bensâ engagement paper. Sign your name and your engagement will be officially broken. Then youâre giving your engagement presents to your sister and Vivian will be Benâs fiancée.â It was a long list of presents for Joey and Ben Hawkâs engagement, and both of them had signed the paper in the presence of their family members.
It wasnât legally bound, but it was the most socially official paper for their engagement other than a marriage license.
Joey was shocked to see the engagement paper in her motherâs hands. She felt more pain than she had felt when she was slapped by her mother moments ago.
She looked at her mother in disbelief and asked with a trembling voice, âMom, did you know about Ben Hawk and Vivian?â
Her mother nodded, suggesting that she had already known about it.
âThen why are you asking me to make way for them? Why? Itâs apparently Vivianâs fault. Ben Hawk is my fiancé. Mom, arenât you mad at Vivian?
Why are you asking me to break off the engagement to make way for her? Is there something wrong with my ears? Am I hearing it wrong?â
Joey was heartbroken.
She had been planning to break off her engagement with Ben Hawk. But it didn't sound right when her mother had decided to ask her to do it.
