Broken ➳Jacob Black [Book 2]
Unplanned Extra Update because you guys make me happy!
"I totally saw something in the woods," Angela told their lunch table the next day.
"Totally baby, I believe you," Eric told her grabbing her hand.
Kate and Mike laughed at the two of them.
"No he doesn't," Jessica told Angela, "He's just trying to get lucky."
Kate laughed even louder.
"Eric, bud, I don't think it's working," Kate told him.
"It was jet-black and huge. On all fours it was still taller than a person. A bear maybe?" Angela continued.
Kate looked down at her plate. Angela had seen Sam. She would have to tell him to be more careful next time.
"Or an alien. You're lucky you didn't get probed," Mike added.
Kate looked across the table to see Bella passing the Cullen's old table and walking to theirs. The people sitting at the table all stared at her. Kate looked at her in total confusion.
"You know you're not the only one," Bella began, "My dad has been getting reports at the station. Like five hikers have been killed by some bear but they can't find the bear."
Angela turned to look triumphant at Eric but Kate just kept looking at Bella confused. She hasn't sat with them for five months why was she sitting with them now? Kate turned to Jessica completely ignoring what was going on with the table. She wasn't sure how she was supposed to process all of this. She was happy her sister was getting back to normal but she knew that Bella would be the center of attention like she always was. She scolded herself on being a terrible sister.
"Do you guys want to go see Face Punch," Bella asked the group.
Kate finally turned to look back at her sister.
"Face Punch," Eric asked, "Yea Mike we were supposed to watch that remember the trailers like boom boom boom."
"Kate you can invite, Jacob," Bella told her.
Kate shrugged, "I don't know if he'd want to..."
"He would," Bella said quickly.
Jessica grabbed Kate's arm, "Oh my god, who's Jacob?" Kate groaned and proceeded to tell Jessica about her best friend.
That night Kate stood awkwardly next to Jacob while Bella went to go buy their tickets for them. Mike stood across from them looking very uncomfortable and looking anywhere but where the two stood. Jacob was standing so close to Kate that it made Kate feel hot on the inside.
"So, Face Punch, huh? You like action movies?" Jacob asked Mike trying to intimidate him.
Mike finally had to look at Jacob, "Not really."
Knowing that he had the upper hand Jacob kept going, "I heard it sucks. Bad."
"Really? I'm not in the mood for a dumb movie," Kate told Jacob trying to get him to ease off of Mike.
Jacob and Mike ignored her.
"Are you even old enough to see this movie?" Mike asked, "You know, without adult supervision?"
"Right, well she'd buying my ticket for me so..." Jacob explained.
Kate rolled her eyes but saw Bella coming.
"Bella," Kate said excitedly to get away from the testosterone.
"Jessica bailed and Angela got the stomach flu so Eric is taking care of her. It's just us four," she told the group.
"Great," Jacob said excitedly.
"Great," Mike said not so excitedly.
Jacob placed a hand on the small of Kate's back and led her into the theater. She was thankful for the darkness hiding her blush at the moment. Jacob sat at the end with Kate next to him and Bella next to her leaving Mike at the other end. Just as Jacob had told them, the movie was awful. Kate had to stop herself from laughing the whole time at how bad it was. She watched as the senseless bloodshed hit the screen. It must have been her time around really scary things that made the movie pale in comparison to her life. After the violence and gore of vampires in werewolves, the movie was pathetic.
About halfway through the movie Jacob placed his hand open on the armrest separating them inviting her to take his hand. Kate looked at it quickly before returning her eyes to the screen. She wanted so badly to take it but couldn't bring herself to do it.
Kate didn't know why she was fighting with herself but she just was. Half of her wanted Jacob so badly but another part of her wanted him as far away from her as possible for his own safety. The images of James's attack on the Swan girls flashed before Kate's mind causing Kate to put a bit more distance between herself and Jacob.
"Okay, I think I'm going to throw up," Mike told them suddenly before rushing out of the theatre. Bella gave Kate and Jacob a look before following him out. They slowly made their way out of the theatre after the friends laughing when they saw Bella go into the men's restroom to look after Mike.
"What a marshmallow," Jacob told Kate.
Kate laughed and nodded her head.
"You should hold out for someone with a stronger stomach. Someone who laughs at the gore that makes weaker men vomit."
"Right well when you find a guy like that, Jacob, give him my number," she laughed even harder before calming down.
"He probably has whatever Angela has..." Kate trailed off because Jacob right hand grabbed Kate's left causing her to freeze. Slowly Kate pulled her hand out of Jacob's grasp.
A look of hurt crossed Jacob's face.
"What? I can't hold your hand?" he asked her.
Kate sighed, "Jacob we can't..."
"Well tell me something, Kate. You like me right? You feel the same feeling as I do whenever we're together? You want to be around me?"
As he said this Jacob got closer and closer to her face. Kate gave a let out a sharp breath of air before sitting down on a nearby set of stairs putting her face in her hands.
"Jacob, don't..."
"Why not?" he asked her.
Kate lowered her hands and looked up at him, "Because this wouldn't work."
"I'm not going to give up trying."
"I don't want you to Jacob, but that's because I can't lose you. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you," Kate had to do this even though her heart felt as if it was being torn in two by some invisible force. She couldn't explain it but it felt as if she wasn't actually supposed to do this for some reason, "I'm no good, Jacob. I'm not kidding. All I do is hurt people. I'm a monster and I couldn't live with myself if I hurt you."
A small frown came over Jacob's face before he sat down next to her.
"Kate. You're not going to hurt me, you could never hurt me, and I will never hurt you," Jacob was so close to her now that when she looked up at him their faces were inches apart.
"You promise?"
"I promise."
The force inside of Kate finally won and took over control of her body. The pressure that she had been feeling for almost a year had finally burst and relieved her of the pressure and replaced it with warmth. Looking at Jacob now she felt like she had the night he held her in his arms: warm, happy and safe. She looked down at his lips that were so close to hers before slowly leaning into him. Their noses brushed as they came closer.
Kate's top lip had barely brushed Jacob's bottom lip when a cough caused them to both jump apart. She looked up to see Mike and Bella standing there. Mike looked at them awkwardly while Bella had a grin on her face.
"Well...I need to go home," Mike told them.
Kate glared at him but her glare was nothing compared to Jacob's glare from beside her. She guessed that the two of them looked pretty frightening because Mike then tried to blubber and explain himself.
"I was feeling sick before the movie, okay? What is your problem?" Mike asked Jacob.
Kate could feel the anger radiating of Jacob like heat waves.
"Right now, you're my problem. Feeling sick, maybe you need to go to the hospital."
She should have seen the warning signs right then because Jacob stood up and made to charge Mike.
"Do you want me to put you in the hospital?"
"Jacob! Hey, calm down it's fine," Kate said grabbing his hand pulling him back not really wanting to cause a fight. The second that Kate touched his hand she noticed how hot his skin was. It wasn't anger that she felt coming off of him; it was his actual body temperature.
"Jacob you're burning up," Kate told him.
Jacob stopped moving but held on tight to her hand. He looked at her quickly before letting go.
"I don't know what's happening. I gotta go," he told her before pushing past them and leaving the movie theater.
Kate followed him for a few steps before stopping watching his retreating back disappear into the night.
"That dude is weird," Mike muttered.
Kate growled, "Shut the hell up Mike or I'll put you in the hospital."
She looked outside to see Jacob's form gone in the night. She thought about his sudden change in mood and temperature with a frown on her face before her head snapped up. She put two and two together: Jacob was phasing.
