âWhy donât you choose a new outfit? Iâll prepare the jewelry for you,â he said.
âNo thanks. Itâll be a waste to get a new one. I donât often wear gowns and jewelry either,â said Valda Theller.
âYouâre going to need them more in the future, so you might as well have more,â said Brian.
She froze, thinking he was implying something.
After dinner, Valda Theller and Brian went to the lakeside for a walk.
The night breeze blew past them. It was comfortable.
There were many couples by the lakeside. Valda Theller could not help but envy the couples walking hand in hand.
Although she had held hands with Brian before, she was usually the one taking the initiative to do with while he just agreed.
He would never have held her hand when they were alone if she did not mention it.
Even if he said he liked her⦠the affection was probably far from the love between lovers.
Valda Thellerâs eyes fell on the couplesâ intertwined hands from time to time.
Suddenly, Valda Theller froze and looked blankly at her right hand.
Another hand was holding her right hand⦠It was Brianâs hand.
âWhyâ¦â
He asked in reply, âDonât you want to? I thought you were looking at other peopleâs hands because you wanted to hold hands too.â
She blushed but admitted it anyway, âYeah, I do.â
âLetâs go on, then,â he said, intending to continue walking.
âWait!â she said suddenly. She leaned over as she wrapped her free arm around his waist and buried her face in his arms. âThank you for playing along with me.â
She murmured, trying to get some things off her chest while she had the courage.
She muttered, âYou said you like me yesterday, and Iâm glad. Even if it might not be love yet, at least itâs a silver lining for me. When I fantasize about you, kiss you, and touch you, youâd say it doesnât matter because weâre a couple, so itâs natural to do these things.
But you know what? I think itâs natural for people who love each other to do these things not just because theyâre a couple.â
He listened in silence. He could feel her body stiffening as she spoke. Her fingers seemed to tighten around his as they continued to hold hands.
She continued, âThough you said you donât hate it when I do this, I donât think itâs pleasant to have someone you donât love do this to you. Iâve only wanted us to be closer and more intimate that I forgot Iâm the only one happy when doing these.â
It was what she felt when she watched the couples pass by.
The couples were beaming when they did something intimate.
However, she had never seen such a look on Brianâs face.
She suddenly found herself a little ridiculous when she thought of how she was secretly delighted to be more intimate with him.
