Chapter 86
When Love Breaks by jack
Chapter 86
I was bewildered, âHow did everyone find out sheâs pregnant?â
Logically, only a few people should have known about it.
âWho knows.â Christine sat cross-legged, âThereâs plenty of people itching to deal with a homewrecker. Probably she slipped up somewhere and word got out.â
*Just watch from the sidelines, donât get involved.â
I was no saint. What Margaret and Bryant got themselves into, this affair mess, whoever would get the short end of the stick had it coming.
But Bryant, he had a nasty temper.
If he decided to play the knight for Margaret, I was worried Christine might get dragged into it.
Surviving in RiverCity by herself was already a full-time job for her. She wouldnât stand a chance against Bryantâs wrath.
Christine awkwardly touched her ear, quickly saying, âGot it.â
She spoke so fast I could barely catch it.
After filling up on some homemade mac and cheese, I watched her swallow her pills before she curled up on the couch to play video games.
Meanwhile, I sprawled over the coffee table, trying to hash out my designs for the competition.
The deadline was tight, and my ideas were still a jumbled mess in my head. I needed to focus.
In the afternoon, my phone, which was lying on the dining table, suddenly rang.
Christine glanced at the caller ID, âWhyâs he calling you?â
âNo idea.â
I answered, puzzled, to hear Bryantâs voice, mixed with emotions, âYouâre not at the office?â
âNo.â
I was surprised he even noticed my absence, âIâve got some personal matters, working from home.â
I had already informed Linda last night that Iâd be working remotely. Anything urgent, she could just call me.

Besides, my current projects could be done with just a laptop.
And as for meetings, Margaret probably preferred me out of the overshadow her.
âWhatâs the matter?â

Just as he finished, another voice burst through, âBry, at a time like this, youâre still worried about her? If youâre not asking her, then I will!â
The phone was snatched away, and Margaretâs voice came through, full of fury, âJane,
you playing at, spreading my pregnancy news like wildfire? Are you trying to ruin

I pursed my lips, staying silent.
Here came the interrogation.
Just yesterday it was him, now today both of them.
A duet of blame?
I was clear of conscience, âThis has nothing to do with me.â
âIf not you, then who? In the whole company, only you have a bone to pick with me. Iâve done nothing wrong; why are you after me?â
Margaret wouldnât listen to reason, âDo you know how nasty the name-calling is? Just because you canât have kids, doesnât mean you should envy me!â
What? I was at a loss for words.
âYes, Jane, I admit Bry and I were childhood sweethearts, and you might be a bit uncomfortable with that. But you didnât have to stab me in the back⦠I never planned on getting back with Bryant, but now with the baby, I have to provide a home for it. At most, this is just reclaiming whatâs mine. Besides, youâve played the role of the rich wife for three years, youâre not losing out.â
Finally, Margaret said, âYouâre a woman too; you must understand my situation. Iâm begging you, please stop itâ¦â
âAre you sick?â Bryantâs sharp voice cut in, âJane said itâs not her, and she doesnât lie. Stop making baseless accusations.â
âWhat do you mean, are you saying Iâm framing her on purpose?â
âNo.â
Margaret sounded displeased, âThen you go ahead and divorce her tomorrow! Once I post our marriage certificate, everyone will know who the real homewrecker is.â
