He didnât even flinch as he frowned. âDo you think Iâd look for trouble for no
reason?â
That was debatable.
The mere sight of Teresa and Margaret irked me so much that I didnât want to
go downstairs. Before I returned to my room, I said, âYou better get rid of
those two women, or Iâm out.â
Before I could even step through the door, Margaret came rushing up. âBry,
youâve got to see this that Janeâ¦â
Her words cut off abruptly as her gaze landed on me.
I didnât want to see Margaret, but since she mentioned me, I faced her, âWhat
about me? Surprisingly, youâre so concerned about me now.â
âWhy are you here? You have some nerve. After the divorce, you are still
hanging around the Ferguson Mansionâ¦â
She tried to hide it, but her tone mixed with jealousy and annoyance.
âMargaret!â Bryant snapped, his face like ice, âI donât want to remind you a
third time. Janeâs still my wife.â

I spoke calmly, âWeâre still missing a divorce certificate. By all accounts, I
belong here more than you do. Since youâre calling me shameless, what does
that make you? Shameless and skinless?â
âSharp-tongued!â Margaret glared at me, huffing, âWhether itâs Bry or Albert,
theyâre the real Fergusons, closest to me! What am I, then?â
Thinking back to what I saw the day before at the hotel, my stomach churned.
âIâm not so sure if you and Bry are close. But Albert and you must be pretty
close.â
At the hotel the day before, they were probably less than an armâs length
apart. How could they not be close? My words were both a jab and a probe.
Perhaps feeling guilty, Margaretâs face flashed with panic, and she quickly
covered it up with anger. âJane, what do you mean? Are you insinuating
something between me and Albert? How could your thoughts be so vile!â
Initially, I only had a vague inkling about Margaret and Albertâs relationship.
But that moment, she provided the missing clarity, making it obvious.
But then, I wouldnât act without solid evidence.
I frowned briefly and smiled., âWhat are you talking about? Whatâs vile? Albert
adores you, his stepdaughter. Whatâs wrong with saying y
