13. Busted
My Neighbor (GirlxGirl)
"What the fuck are you doing here" Harvey spits, his wrists clenching
"I-" Not managing to get a word out, I freeze. There is no possible explanation as to what I was doing listening to their fight. None.
"Are you fucking obsessed with us? This is the second time I see you spying on my wife and I, are you insane?" He yells with so much anger in his voice
"Enough!" Eve intervenes "Don't say another word and get out" She rushes him, standing in front of me
He looks over, wondering why Eve stood up to defend me. Looking even angrier than he did a second ago.
"What the fuck is going on, why are you defending a stranger?" Harvey looks over at Eve, his face filled with angst and disgust
"Don't take your anger out on a teenager Harvey. Get the fuck out." Eve says sternly
He chuckles, takes his coat and phone and leaves the room, pushing me in the process.
A second after, I hear the front door close loudly and take a deep breath.
"Are you okay? I'm so sorry" Eve looks over at me and runs her hand along my cheek. I flush because of her touch combined with the adrenaline.
"Thank you for this but.. are you okay?" I ask her, collecting myself and trying to be here for her. After all, she's the one suffering from this situation, not me.
She nods unsurely and looks away. "My kids" Realisation strikes her and she rushes downstairs
I follow her downstairs and we see Cindy, hugging the frightened Cami and Jour, looking heartbroken herself. My heart rips at the sight of them. They must have heard everything and seen their father storm out without a word.
"Oh, my loves" Eve says as a single tear escapes her eyes and she kneels down to comfort her kids "I'm sorry you had to hear this. Everything's okay."
"Daddy was so angry.." Jour says and Eve gulps.
"It's okay darling, I told him to come back when he's calmed down. He needs to take care of his emotions like I taught you all to do. It's going to be okay" She leans down and they hug her back. Cami seems to believe her while Cindy is having a harder time. Which is expected, since she is the only one who truly understood what was said during their fight.
After a while of seeing them comfort each other, I decide it's not my place, and the faster I leave, the better.
"I'll go home okay? Call me if you need anything" I tell Eve and turn around, making my way towards the door.
"Alex, please stay" Eve gets up and tries preventing me from leaving
"It's not my place Eve" I say sadly, feeling extremely out of place and responsible for what happened
I leave the house, thinking she will let me be. But I was wrong. She grabs my hand in the middle of the street and makes me look at her.
I start telling myself that ignoring Eve must be a way for me to run away from Eve, because every time I come close to it I can barely handle it.
"Please don't go" Eve's eyes plead me while I try controlling my heart beat
"I should not have been there.." I admit, looking down
"Were you spying on me?" She asks me and for a second my heart sinks, until I notice the amused look on her face. She's softly smirking at me
"N-no" I say, knowing I don't sound convincing
"Yes. But I truly did not mean to. The kids heard you fight and I thought I should call you down to dinner, so they don't have to hear more of it. I'm sorry. I really shouldn't have come in between your relationship with your husband.. I know it's not my place and I truly feel bad-" I say
"You came in between as soon as you tried to kiss me, Alex" She softens and makes me realise what I had done
"I'm-" I try apologising
"And that's okay. Our marriage is long gone. My kids shouldn't be hearing these things. Thank you for stepping in." She says, so full of confidence, so beautiful
I nod and look into her, seeing her eyes searching for me. I gulp, feeling that need to kiss her again, like the other night.
"Alex!" I suddenly hear my name from my house. My heart starts racing as I turn my head and see my dad at the front porche, looking at Eve and I. She instinctively takes a step back and I gulp.
"Hi dad" I say, thinking he definitely knows something unusual was going on.
He comes closer to us, a confused look on his face "Hi Mrs. Spencer" He says nicely, wondering why Eve and I were talking in the middle of the street, hell, wondering why Eve and I were even talking so late in the day in the first place
"Thought you'd come home for dinner? What have you been up to?" My dad asks me, confused
"I-um I just" I start mumbling, wanting the world to swallow me at that moment, thinking there is no way out
"I actually asked her to babysit my kids. My husband and I had last minute responsibilities and I couldn't think of anyone else. Sorry, should have warned." Eve smiles at him warmly as I wonder how she came up with that so fast
"Mhm" My dad says and looks at both of us, as I am trying to make out whether he is suspicious or not.
"Well how was your first day of school?" My dad asks me and I feel embarrassed as he asks me a typical question that a parent asks.. their kid. In front of Eve.
"It was okay. Same old boring school." I nod
I see Eve look away and bite her lip at the awkward interaction and mentally slap myself, begging my dad to leave
"Alright well um.. See you at home then" My dad raises his eyebrows and I try not to laugh.
"I will dad, see you later" I say and he goes back to the house
Once he leaves, I see Eve laugh nervously. She bites her lip and looks at me.
"Well, that was close" I jokingly say and Eve throws me a look.
"How so? Nothing suspicious was happening" She smirks and I blush at the thought, remembering she can't read my mind. Although I'm pretty sure she did.
