: Chapter 19
Marriage of Convenience
I sat at my desk, studying the project plans for the new resort in Florida. My stomach growled letting me know it was about time for lunch. A couple of times this week, I considered calling Sara to see if wanted to meet me or suggest I go home and combine business with pleasure.
I shook my head. That woman was spoiling me sexually.
I heard voices outside my door, recognizing my wifeâs. That though jerked me to attention. My wife. Iâd certainly called her that, but I couldnât remember thinking of her in those terms. Of course, she was my wife, but this was a business deal.
There was a knock and then Hunter walked in with Sara in tow. What the fuck was he doing with Sara? I stood, not liking the angry scowl on Hunterâs face. Granted, the guy never smiled, but he clearly wasnât happy. I stood and came around my desk.
âSome dumb fuck was man-handling your intern outside the building,â he growled.
My gaze jerked to Sara. âAre you hurt?â I scanned her perfect body, stopping when I saw bruises developing on her arm. âWho did that to you?â My voice was calm although on the inside, rage was boiling.
âItâs nothing. Hunter chased him off.â Her voice sounded calm, but I could see in her eyes that the incident unsettled her.
âThose bruises arenât nothing.â I wanted to pummel the fucker that dared lay his hands on my wife. âI have a right to know.â
I noted Hunterâs brows pulling together and I wondered if he thought Iâm overstepping the bounds for an intern. If only he knew the truth.
Sara sighed. âHeâs an ex-boyfriend who tracked me down to talk to me.â
Hunterâs head swiveled to her, wearing the same expression. âHe was yanking you up the street.â He turned his attention back to me. âHe doesnât seem to know or accept sheâs not into him.â
Saraâs behavior last weekend was starting to make sense. âDid he hurt you? I mean before.â
She swallowed. I saw her eyes fill with tears, but she kept them from falling. âNot really. Heâs mostly all talk.â
I had the urge to grab her and hold her tight, protecting her from all the evil in the world. At the same time, I needed to hunt the mother fucker down and make him regret ever touching or scaring her.
Hunter studied me and perhaps saw the murderous rage building in me. Heâd certainly be able to recognize it.
âSara, why donât you get some water and freshen up,â Hunter suggested. âTake a minute to settle.â
She looked at him and then me. I nodded because I couldnât trust the words that might come from my mouth. They wouldnât be angry at her, but they still might not be appropriate.
When she left my office, I ran my fingers through my hair. âFuck.â Deciding I needed a drink, I went to the bar. I poured a double shot of the first bottle I grabbed, not caring what it was as long as it was at least eighty-proof.
âWhatâs going on, Chase?â Hunter asked. He stood with his hands on his hips, his dark eyes piercing mine. I felt like he could see into my soul.
âWant a drink?â
âNo, I want to know whatâs going on with you and the intern.â Hunter was always direct, often to the point of abrupt. Usually I appreciated that in him. Right now, I needed a moment to get my shit together.
âDid you hurt him?â I asked.
âA little. I threatened to kill him.â
My lips twitched up at that, although Iâd rather be the one doing the killing.
âIâm not happy that someone at Raven Industries was accosted on my watch, but Iâm even more concerned at your reaction. Whatâs going on, Chase? No bullshit. You know I donât like it.â
I downed my drink and then, like a man, I turned to face my brother. âSara isnât an intern anymore.â
Hunterâs expression remained unchanged, except for one brow that lifted as he waited for me to elaborate.
âSheâs my wife.â
His other brow joined the first, and his jaw dropped. âWhat?â
I nodded, rolling my shoulders to help work out the tension. âSince last weekend.â
âYouâve got to be shittinâ me.â
I shook my head. I leaned back against my desk, curious as to what heâd do.
âThis has to do with Dadâs crazy new plan?â he asked.
âYes.â
âAnd she agreed?â
âYes. Of course. I didnât force her.â I wasnât an asshole.
Hunter looked away, his brows knitted as he appeared to process what Iâd said. Then he pulled his phone out.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked.
âTexting Ash and Kade, or do they already know?â
I sighed, realizing I couldnât put off telling them all any longer. âNo, they donât know. At least not about Sara.â I remembered that Ash thought I was seeing someone.
âKade is going to shit himself.â Hunter grinned, a rare sight on him. âThe little shit deserves it.â
âIâm glad youâre finding humor in my marriage. But someone just tried to grab my wife and I donât like it, Hunter.â
His jovial expression vanished. âIâll find out who he is.â He cocked his head. âYouâre pretty worked up about this. Is this a match made in heaven and not just a business deal?â
âNo,â I said quickly. âBut that doesnât mean Iâm okay with some asshole going after my wife.â
Hunterâs head did a double take. âThatâs weird.â
âWhat?â I could hear exasperation building in my tone.
âSaying âmy wife.ââ
Yeah, well, it should have been weird to say it and it was starting to unsettle me that it wasnât.
âWhatâs going on?â Ash poked his head in the door.
âCome in. Is Kade with you?â I asked working to psyche myself up for this talk.
âYep.â Ash and Kade strode in with curious expressions.
âDid someone die?â Kade asked. âI hope it isnât Dad. I havenât found my wife and had a kid yet.â
Hunter bit his lip to hide amusement. Since the guy had come back from the war, I could count the number of times Iâd seen him smile or looked amused. Half of them had just happened in my office in the last few minutes.
âYouâre behind,â he said.
I shot him a look.
âWhich of your harem have you decided to marry?â Kade asked Hunter.
âI donât need this job as much as you guys do. Iâm happy to forfeit my inheritance and live happily ever after with my harem. Chase on the other handâ¦â
âChase what?â Ash asked.
I took a deep breath. âI got married.â
Kadeâs mouth dropped. Ashâs brows pulled together. Hunter continued to watch it all with amusement. Fucker.
âWhoâs the lucky gal?â Hunter prompted me.
I shot him a look.
âYeah, what poor soul was willing to put up with you?â Kade asked.
âSara.â
Kadeâs eyes narrowed. âWho?â
âIntern,â Hunter said.
Ash let out a loud bark of a laugh. âSheâs the one you were fucking all weekend?â
I hated that he used the word fucking. It was vulgar even if it was what we were doing.
âHoneymoon,â I said.
âHoly shit.â Kade laughed. âSo, you could be on the way to fulfilling the second half of Dadâs crazy scheme too.â
I nodded.
Kade shook his head. âI didnât know you had it in you.â
âTo make a baby?â I asked. Just because I wasnât a horndog didnât mean I didnât know how to fuck.
âSo, you sold your soul to the devil. Poor kid. I bet she has no idea what sheâs gotten herself into. Christ, sheâs what⦠nineteen, twenty? Was she a virgin?â Kade said.
âKade, stop being an asshole,â Hunter said.
âSheâll be back here in a minute. Iâd appreciate it if you could get your heads out of your asses and treat her with respect.â I said with special attention to Kade.
âYeah, sheâs his wife,â Hunter said, with another smirk at me.
âYes, one who was assaulted on the street today,â I said back to him. âSecurity is getting lax around here.â I hated being an asshole to him, but I wasnât going to take anymore of his snark.
My words effectively knocked the smirk off his face.
âWhat do you mean she was assaulted?â Ash asked. At least I could count on him to focus on what was important.
âAn old boyfriend tried to grab her,â Hunter said. âGood thing I was there, so I could stop him.â He glared at me.
âIs she alright?â Ash asked.
âYes, but I think we need to consider that anyone associated with us could become a target.â
âIt was her ex,â Hunter said.
âYes, but any opportunists would see that if they kidnapped any member of our family, thereâd be money it.â
âIf I get married for this dumb plan, a kidnapping would solve my problem,â Kade helped himself to a drink at my bar.
âYou really are an asshole,â Ash said.
âYouâre okay with someone taking whatâs yours?â I asked.
âYouâre telling me this marriage is for real? Love ever after? Tell it to us straight, Chase. How long is this marriage supposed to last before she rides off into the sunset with whatever millions of dollars you offered her? Donât give me that âwhatâs yoursâ bullshit.â Kade downed his drink.
âThere is no end date,â I said.
All three of my brothers looked at me. I felt the scrutiny but held strong. âShe wonât abandon the child. So, weâll live together like a family.â
âThatâs fucked,â Ash said, his voice disappointed.
âLike mom and dad,â Kade said, his voice low. I was pretty sure Kade had been the child my mother had to try to get my dad back and involved in the family, but the opposite happened. I think he had less time with Dad than the rest of us growing up. Maybe thatâs why he was such an asshole so often.
I nodded. âExcept we like each other more.â
Ash studied me. âSo youâre just going to be friends with benefits or does that end when she has a child?â
âIâm having a hard time believing you agreed to that,â Kade said before I could respond to Ash.
âWhy?â I asked.
âYouâre not the type to get saddled with a woman,â he said pouring himself a second drink.
âI can see it,â Ash said. âHe doesnât see himself saddled. Sheâs a means to an end. As long as she doesnât make too many demands or expect an emotional attachment, he can put up with her. I bet you have separate rooms.â
My jaw tensed that heâd be so spot on.
âOh, I donât know,â Hunter said. âHe was pretty emotional when he heard sheâd been grabbed. And he calls her his wife.â
âTechnically she is,â I ground out.
âWell, this is going to be interesting. I wonder what Dad will say. Legit or not, if he learns itâs all for the inheritance, he might disqualify you,â Kade said.
âSo, he wonât find out.â
âChase, you married within a week of him announcing his crazy deal and to a woman you hadnât even known then,â Ash pointed out.
âLove at first sight. Or maybe I knocked her up. Heâll buy it.â At least I hoped he would.
Hunter laughed, making us all look at him and gape. âMom would be horrified by all this. But to me, this is the most fun Iâve had since I can remember.â
âIâm pleased you find my personal life so humorous.â I looked at each one of my brothers. âYou can continue to poke fun at me, but I will insist that you treat Sara with respect. Sheâs not from our world.â
Kade waved a hand. âSheâll get used to it. Money has a way of doing that.â
âNot, Sara. Sheâs struggling to adapt. I mean it, Kade. Treat my wife with respect.â
Hunter snorted. âSorry⦠that âmy wifeâ thing gets me every time.â
