Chapter 3

01 | best friend of the year

Two Opposites (OWENS SERIES #2)

With a sigh I left the college building, glad that today's classes are finally over. I mean I love being able to study here at the NYU but Dr. Martin loves

to challenge his students which was exactly what he did today. His classes are my least favorite but I have to get through them if I want to get my degree and open my own children hospital one day which is my only motivation at this point.

I was walking down the stairs with my best friend Myra next to me, when I heard someone shout my name from behind, so without thinking I stopped walking in the middle of th stairs causing the people behind me to bump into me, almost knocking me over. I should have thought about that before I stopped but of course I didn't. Typical clumsy me.

"I'm so sorry" I quickly apologized to the annoyed looking girl who didn't acknowledge my apology at all and just continued walking down the stairs complaining to her friend about me. Someone seemed to be in a bad mood that day.

"Hey girl she said sorry!" Myra shouted after her and I quickly grabbed her arm to stop her because everyone was already staring at us. Oh god how much I hate Myra and her 'I don't give a fuck' attitude sometimes.

"That was not necessary!" I whisper shouted at her but she just shrugged her shoulders and pointed at something behind me.

I slowly turned around to see who shouted after me and saw Clark King, a classmate of mine, running towards me.

"Hey Emilia I just wanted to ask when you're free to work on the presentation Dr. Martin told us to do" he said when he arrived and I gave him a friendly smile.

"Maybe tomorrow after my shift at the flower shop if that's fine with you" I replied and he immediately nodded without hesitation, blushing a little bit when he noticed how quick he reacted.

"Uhm when does your shift end?" he nervously asked.

"Around 4pm"

"Okay do you want me to pick you up from the shop? You know so that you don't have to walk on your own" he asked and rubbed his neck while doing so.

"Oh I don't think that would be necessary. I don't want to bother you that much. It's only a five minute walk from the shop to the library but I appreciate it that you asked" I replied with a smile and from the corner of my eye I saw Myra grinning at the still flushed looking Clark.

"Okay then I'll see you tomorrow at 4pm I guess" he said, waved awkwardly and walked away whereas I turned towards Myra who was still grinning.

"What?" I asked as we started walking again.

"That guy definitely has a crush on you" she said and I inwardly rolled my eyes at her statement.

"No he doesn't. He simply asked me when I'm free to do something for college. He had no other intention" I stated and she rolled her eyes at me.

"They guy was as red as a tomato of course he has a crush one you don't try to deny it because I know you've seen it" she said

"You think everyone has a crush on me" I replied.

"Because everyone does. Look at you! You're the most adorable human I know"

"Thanks?" I said unsure of what she wanted. She only gave me compliments when she wanted something which I don't mind because I love helping her.

"And because you're also the nicest person and my best friend you would love to take over my shift in the shop wouldn't you?" she asked, giving me her puppy dog eyes that I couldn't resist even if I wanted to.

"Why can't you do it?" I whined, but I knew that I would do the shift anyway.

"I met this really hot girl and she asked me if I'm free today. Please Em just this one time" she pleaded once again and I sighed.

"Fine. Did you already tell your mom that I'm taking over your shift today?" I asked and she nodded. Of course she already knew that I'd say yes which is the reason why she could tell her mom, who is also our boss at the flower shop, that I'm doing the shift. Why am I that easy to convince?

"I love you so much. You deserve the best friend of the year award" she squeaked and hugged me, almost squeezing me to death with her tight grip on my tiny body.

"I love you too" I replied and she let go of me.

"By the way I really love your dress. It suits you" she said right before she walked away. Like I said she only gave me compliments when she wanted something. Myra absolutely hated my sense of fashion saying it's 'too girly' and 'too little girl like' but I don't care. Pink is my favorite color so I'm still going to wear it even though she suggested that I should wear sexier clothes which I'm pretty sure I wouldn't feel comfortable in.

There are a lot of differences between Myra and I, if you couldn't already tell but she has been my pretty much my only friend for my entire life. There were a few exceptions here and there but all these friendships, especially my friendships with boys, fell apart because of my overprotective brother who didn't want me to have many friends because they could potentially hurt me. The only friend he approved of was Myra which is the reason why we're still friend till this day.

I took a quick glance at my watch just to see that my shift, or should I say Myra's shift, starts in 10 minutes which meant that I didn't have any time left to grab myself some lunch. With a sigh I started walking towards the flower shop while writing Myra a text saying that she owes me lunch.

"Hey Jennifer" I greeted Myra's mom when I entered the flower shop ready to start the shift. On my way towards the back I put my long, slightly wavy, blonde hair into a high ponytail to prevent the hair from falling into my face while I'm helping the customers. I was in the middle of tying my green apron when Jennifer suddenly appeared in the back.

"Do you know who she's with?" she asked, looking at me curiously.

"I don't know the name she just said that she was meeting up with some girl" I replied and finished tying my apron, making my way towards the front of the shop.

"It's still quite weird to hear that" Jennifer said while holding some flowers in her hand to bind them into a bouquet.

"It's been only a few weeks since she came out to you guys I guess it's okay to feel that way even though it shouldn't feel any different for you guys. She's still the same Myra and her sexual orientation isn't going to change that" I said with a small smile that Jennifer immediately returned.

"I guess you're right. At least I don't have to worry about her getting pregnant accidentally" Jennifer laughed and I joined in on her laughter but we were interrupted by the ringing of the bell than hung above the door. An old lady came into the shop and not just any old lady. It's Mrs. Gallagher my favorite customer of them all. She always brightens up my days when she comes to the shop. Inwardly squeaked in excitement and Jennifer looked at me, knowing that I would want to serve her.

"Hello Mrs. Gallagher. I love the skirt you're wearing!" I complimented her and she gave me a cheerful smile.

"Oh dear you flatter me. But look at you! Stunning as always" she complimented me back and we walked towards the counter so that I could make her the usual bouquet of flowers that she always buys for her husband's grave.

"So is there anything new to gossip about? A boy maybe?" she asked and I laughed at the curious woman in front of me.

"No I'm afraid not. I just haven't found the right one yet" I said but she just shrugged.

"I was the same. When I was your age... you're 19 right?" she asked to make sure before she continued and I nodded so she went on with whatever she wanted to say.

"When I was your age everyone was already married and had kids and everyone told me to get married to but I waited for the right one. My husband and I met not even a year later and I'm glad that I waited. So don't let people pressure you into dating! And if someone tries to pressure you, tell me and I'll give them a piece of my mind" she jokingly threatened and I laughed. She's so pure.

Once I was done arranging all the flowers I handed her the bouquet whereas she handed me 25$ dollar for it. During our exchange I hear the bell ring again and looked up to see a tall man with a black suit enter the shop, catching my full attention. And also Mrs. Gallagher's.

"What about him?" she whispered to me with a giggle and I shook my head laughing at her, making a few loose strands fall into my face.

"He's attractive" I simply added and it was true. He really was attractive but he had a powerful aura around. He basically screamed the term rich and important, the suit he was wearing probably cost more than my entire college fee.

"Have a great day Emilia" she said with a knowing smile and turned around, leaving me alone with the attractive stranger.

"Goodbye to you to Mrs. Gallagher. I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked and she nodded.

"Of course you will dear. We have some things to talk about" she said while wiggling her eyebrows and just in that moment the stranger turned around to look at her and obviously he saw her facial expression, making me blush like crazy and if I could I would dig a hole so deep that I could say hello to Hades.

"Interesting character" the stranger said once Mrs. Gallagher left the shop.

"Yeah she definitely is" I replied while trying to calm my heart that was rapidly beating against my chest.

"Isaac Owens" he said and I looked at him as if he grew two heads.

"Pardon?" I asked.

"Isaac Owens. I was introducing myself" he huffed. Of course he did. Why am I so stupid especially when I'm around new people? Sometimes I actually wonder how I got into med school.

"Oh uhm hey" I replied not knowing what to say.

"And you are...?" he asked and I mentally slapped myself.

"Emilia Johnson" I replied with a face as a red as a tomato.

"Cute" was the only thing he replied to that and I looked at the ground waiting for it to open and swallow me in order to get out of this awkward situation that I always find myself in over and over again.

So today marks three years since I first published the original Story 'Billionaire's Baby Mama' which was the first book I've ever written in english and I remember how nervous I was to take the step of writing in another language. But I'm glad that I made that decision and I've never imagined to reach so many People with my books it's so overwhelming.

Now tell me have you read Billionaire's Baby Mama already and are a part of the Ella and Anthony Squad or are you reading  'Two Opposites' as a stand-alone novel? I'd really like to know.
