Chapter 6-Paranormal Bureau of Investigation
Roweena
How did they find us so fast? Roe thought to herself as the uniformed men came through the doorway. No one should've known where we were besides Joe, and I trust him. There's no way he told these guys where we were. And who the heck are they? They're not regular cops, or they would've announced themselves before breaking the door down. Roe was shot in the arm as she dove to her right behind the bed. Crap, that hurts. I hope I can get away with pretending to be human. I guess a human would be screaming at a time like this. So, she started screaming.
She looked at Shane and Adrian, and saw them both being shot. They just continued to stand there, snarling at the uniformed men, until a tall, well built man with short brown hair stepped forward and said "Hold your fire." The other men stopped shooting at his command. "You've both been identified as men wanted by the PBI."
When he said that, Roe stopped screaming so she could hear him better. What is he talking about? she thought.
Shane just snarled at him more as Adrian said "Exactly what are we wanted for."
The man replied, "For kidnapping humans, as well as other supernatural creatures, and killing them."
"I have done no such thing." Adrian replied, sounding offended.
At the same time, Shane snapped. "That's stupid. I haven't done anything like that."
"We have evidence that it is you."
What evidence? Even with evidence, that can't possibly be true. Everyone in the supernatural community knows who's done what before PBI ever begins to get involved. Usually it's us that calls them because we don't have the resources to go after the rogue, without a huge loss of life. They rarely get involved until we've tried everything we can think of to get rid of the rogue. Nobody wants a clandestine part of the government meddling in their affairs, or taking any notice of them for that matter.
"How can you have evidence against us when you haven't even asked our names?" Adrian asked.
"As part of our evidence, we got information that you were here with a human woman. And from what I've seen, you are."
"But-" Shane started.
"Fine, we're here, but that doesn't mean that we've done what you're claiming, or that there was something non-consensual going on here." Adrian overrode whatever Shane was going to say.
"Enough arguing." The man said. "We're taking all three of you in for questioning, and we'll find out then if you are who we think, or not."
"So, guilty without any kind of trial?" Shane snapped.
"Something like that." The man answered.
"Are we going to get to see what evidence you supposedly have against us?" Adrian asked.
"You will be appointed a lawyer. They can deal with it."
Well, at least he seems to be with PBI, they do have trials before sentencing anyone.
"Now, are you going to come along quietly, or do we have to do this the hard way?"
"What makes you think you could possibly take us?" Shane asked cockily.
"We haven't used them yet, but we do have silver bullets laced with wolfsbane for you, and wooden bullets for your vampire friend. The only reason we haven't used them so far is that we weren't trying to hurt you, just get enough of our men in here to assure that you couldn't escape." The man paused then said. "Not to mention that we're all supernatural creatures too. You don't stand a chance against us."
So that's why they have such a good record catching the rogues that no one else can catch. I wonder why no one realizes that they're supernatural creatures. There's got to be a cloaking spell of some sort on the group.
Adrian looked at Shane, then at Roe. Roe mouthed to him "Can you read my mind?" as she dropped her mental walls.
I can now. Adrian spoke into her head.
What do you want to do? I don't want anyone to get hurt, and I don't see a way out of here without that happening. She asked him.
If we surrender, what are they going to do with us?
He was telling the truth about getting a lawyer, and having a trial. Of course, that's assuming they're really from the PBI.
Hmm, that would be an issue if they're not.
Yeah. And apparently they're taking me with y'all. Stall him for a minute, and I'll send a message to Joe about what's going on. See if you can get his name for me. Roe said mentally as she quietly squirmed around to get her phone out of her pocket, trying not to attract attention.
Adrian looked at the uniformed man again. "I'm from Romania, as you should already know. In my country, when someone is being arrested, they are usually treated to the officer's name and rank." He tilted his head sideways. "Are you going to do me the discourtesy of not allowing me to know to whom I am speaking?"
"You don't really need to know." Another one of the uniformed men snapped. Â He was shorter than Special Agent Maitland but still taller than Roe, with brown eyes and short dirty blonde hair. Â Wow, that guy is ugly, and I don't mean just his attitude.
"Easy now, Reynolds." The first man said. "It doesn't hurt for them to know who their arresting officer is. I'm Special Agent Maitland."
"What agency do you belong to?" Adrian asked.
"We're with the PBI."
"All right." Adrian replied, inclining his head to Agent Maitland. "Thank you."
I texted Joe. Roe said to Adrian, as she quietly and slowly put her phone back in her pocket, still trying not to attract attention.
Does your phone lock? Adrian asked her.
Yes, it does, and it's on.
Okay. Good.
I also put it on silent.
Adrian didn't reply to her, as Special Agent Maitland captured his attention again. "So, are you going to come along peacefully, or not?"
"I guess we don't really have a choice." Adrian said wryly.
"We do, too." Shane snapped at him.
"Shane, what exactly do you hope to accomplish by fighting them? They're going to take us in, find out that they're wrong about us, and let us go. If you fight them, it will take longer for us to be released."
"He's right." Special Agent Maitland interjected. "If you really are innocent, you don't need us to charge you with resisting arrest, now do you?"
Shane looked undecided, so Adrian asked him, "What would your Alpha want you to do?"
Shane looked down and grumbled, "Go with them."
Adrian nodded, and said "Good."
"Okay boys," Agent Maitland said to his men. "Cuff them, and get them to the car."
Some of the PBI officers put their guns away, and stepped forward. They put handcuffs on Shane and Adrian, and led them out the door with most of the other men following them. As the officers were going out the door, the man that Agent Maitland had called Reynolds walked around the bed toward where Roe was still laying pressed up against it.
"Hey there honey." Reynolds said to Roe, peering down at her. "What was a pretty girlie like you doing with these monsters?"
"Monsters?" Roe asked. What is he talking about? I thought that Special Agent Maitland guy had said that they were all supernatural creatures. Why would he be calling Shane and Adrian 'Monsters'?
"Yeah, they're monsters. They've been hunting and making people disappear all over the place around here. You should be glad that we saved you."
What on earth is he talking about? "They're not the ones behind the disappearances." Roe replied.
"We have evidence that they are." He snapped at her.
"They haven't even been in the area. They couldn't have done it." Roe tried reasoning with him.
"We have evidence that they did it." He repeated angrily.
"What evidence?"
"It doesn't matter what evidence." He scoffed at her. "You should be more thankful that we saved you, instead of defending those monsters who were going to kill you."
What is with this guy? Why would he think I'd be thankful for him arresting my friends? And why does he keep repeating that? "Thankful how?" Roe asked cautiously.
"I'm sure you can think of something." He said with a suggestive smile. "You can do what you were going to do with them, but with me instead."
Oh, my goddess. He thinks I'm a prostitute and was here to sleep with Adrian and Shane. And now, he wants me to sleep with him to thank him for saving me. He has absolutely lost his mind. "I'm not a prostitute, and I'm not sleeping with you."
He stared angrily at her, and grabbed her ankle to drag her away from the bed. "You need to thank me for saving you. And you're going to do it, whether you want to or not."
Oh, no I'm not. Roe thought as he started dragging her away from the bed by her right ankle. Roe rolled so her left leg was free and kicked him in the face. "Get the hell away from me!" She yelled at him raising herself up on her elbows, as he dropped her ankle to grab his nose.
"You stupid little bitch. You're going to pay for that." He snarled at her as he stepped toward her. He raised his hand back, and slapped her across the face.
Roe fell back onto the floor with the impact and rolled up under the bed as far as she could, which wasn't very far considering the bed was on a platform. What is wrong with this guy? He has absolutely lost his mind. I wish this stupid bed didn't have a solid base. I can't really get underneath it. Are all these guys just going to let him get away with doing this to me? Roe started screaming as loud and shrill as she could, absolutely shrieking her head off.
Her screaming finally attracted Special Agent Maitland's attention, and he walked over to the bed and asked "Reynolds, what the hell is going on over here?"
"I'm having a little trouble getting the girl to come away from the bed. She also kicked me in the face when I tried to help her up."
"Liar, LIAR!" Roe shrieked.
"She was apparently under the vampire's spell, and is totally disoriented." Reynolds told Special Agent Maitland.
Roe was so incensed by what he was saying that she sat up, still in the corner by the bed and nightstand. "You are such a liar." She said to Reynolds. "I know exactly where I am, and who I was here with. You called me a prostitute, and were trying to rape me as your payment for saving me." She glared at them both. "Not that I actually need saving, anyway."
"What is she talking about?" Special Agent Maitland asked Reynolds.
"She's hysterical. She's not making any sense to me." He said, shaking his head.
Roe sat up more, leaned forward and very calmly said, "I am not hysterical. I just refuse to have sex with Reynolds here to thank him, as he said, for rescuing me. I wasn't kidnapped or under anyone's control. I was here of my own free will. But I absolutely refuse to sleep with any of y'all just to thank you for rescuing me. No matter who thinks I should." She glared at Reynolds as she said the last sentence.
Special Agent Maitland turned to Reynolds, and spoke slowly and thoughtfully. "This isn't the first time I've been told something like this about you. I've never been able to speak to one of your accusers before today, and I've given you the benefit of the doubt up till now."
"I didn't do anything wrong." Reynolds defended himself.
"I'll deal with you later. Go outside and wait with the others." Special Agent Maitland said, dismissing Reynolds. He turned back to Roe, and held out his hand "Come on, I'll help you up. We're not all like that." He paused, shook his head then said, "None of us are supposed to be like that. I need you to tell me exactly what happened."
Roe sat there looking at him and his outstretched hand. "Why should I talk to you? You're his friend."
"Actually, I'm his commanding officer, not his friend. I'd like to know what happened because as I said, this isn't the first time I've heard bad things about Officer Reynolds. I would really like to know what he said to you. I promise I won't hurt you."
"What about him? Officer Reynolds?" Roe asked suspiciously. I wonder if these two are really working together, and Maitland is going to tell Reynolds what I say. Even if they're not working together, will Reynolds try to get back at me for telling on him?
"I won't let him hurt you, either."
She slowly nodded and took his hand, letting him help her up. As soon as she was on her feet, she let his hand go, grabbed her left arm, and held it to her.
"You've been shot. Why didn't you say anything?"
