Chapter 995
When There Is Nothing Left But Love
Faced with my slew of questions, he replied, âIâve been well. But how do you know Brandon?â
âDo you know him too?â I asked, surprised.
He nodded. âYeah, Dante works with him. Iâve met him a couple of times. They operate in the black
market, so why are you meeting him? Are you sick?â
I shook my head urgently. âNo, Iâm not sick. But my daughter is.â
Shocked, he said, âI see. Itâs better to steer clear of them if you can, though. If you get involved in the
black market, itâs hard to get them off your record.â
I didnât quite understand his warning but nodded. âOk, I know.â
Since he didnât have more to say, I spoke up again. âSince youâre here, shall we grab a bite together?â
He shook his head. âNo, I have other things to do. Iâll be off then.â
Seeing that he was ready to leave, I called out to stop him. âDanny, how should I keep in touch with you
next time?â
He turned his head back to look at me. âIâm very grateful for how youâve helped me in the past. If you
have any questions for me, you should ask them now. Iâll tell you everything I know, and then weâre
even.â
This statement confused me. His brows were furrowed in impatience as he watched me. I couldnât help
but wonder if Iâd underestimated the complexity of our history.
After a pause, I asked, âWhat are you doing in A City? Do you know about Abeâs death?â
He pursed his lips before replying, âI know what happened to Mr. Langston. As for my job in A City, itâs
exactly what Dante is doing.â
I frowned. âBut itâs illegal!â
He mumbled an agreement but continued matter-of-factly, âI know, but I gotta do what I gotta do to
survive. A City isnât a good place to make a living for us foreigners. At the end of the day, we need
money to live.â
I didnât know how to respond to that. I couldnât deny the truth in his words. We are but slaves to the
money that governs our lives in this world.
âIs it true then, that as long as thereâs money, you can carry out a perfect crime?â I blurted.
He knitted his brows uncomprehendingly at my question. A moment later, he said, âYou should go
home. Itâs not safe out here.â
I had more questions to ask but heâd already walked away.
If Hailey is telling the truth, then Armond is really engaged in shady dealings. I couldnât imagine the
number of innocent lives they had harmed each year.
I was caught in a dilemma. If I pursued this to the end, I was worried I wouldnât be able to accept the
consequence. After all, I was a willing participant in an illegal deal, and losses and gains always came
hand-in-hand. My decision to seek out Amy in the countryside was entirely due to my wish to save my
daughter.
Haileyâs father could bring himself to harm a perfectly healthy child to keep his daughter alive. Itâs hard
to pin the blame on anyone, but someone was undeniably killed in the exchange.
I knew I couldnât sort out these dilemmas alone. I called Ashton when I was in the car. The phone rang
for a while before he answered. I could hear his clear voice through the receiver. âWhatâs up?â
Ashton was still angry at me over the name card incident. I sighed before asking, âWhere are you? I
miss you.â
My words seemed to surprise him, and there was a pause before he replied, âSee you at home.â
He hung up on me. Perplexed, I stared at my phone. Why did he just hang up on me like that?
I put down my phone and headed straight for the villa. Ashton was sitting in the living room when I
arrived, looking like heâd just reached home not too long ago. His dark eyes showed a hint of surprise
as they landed on me.
He pursed his lips and put on a somewhat petty air. âWhy did you call me?â
So heâs still angry at me then. I walked toward him and said gently, âI did meet Armond when I was in K
City; you knew about that already. When I came to A City to find Amy, it was based on information that
Armond had given to me. Ashton, I wasnât lying to you. I just didnât want you to overthink things. Thatâs
all.â
Sensing the cloud of anger around him, I let out a frustrated sigh. âI know this is my fault. I shouldnât
have lied to you. Will you please stop being angry at me? Ashton, we shouldnât be upset at each other
over such small things. I suspect that Armond has dealings in the black market and probably the
deaths of countless people on his hands. I donât know anymore if I can proceed with Summerâs surgery.
Can we stop arguing and start discussing more important things?â
He frowned slightly as he stared at me. âBlack market?â
I nodded. âI found out from my contact that they have their own operating theatre and equipment. On
that note, do you remember how we met a girl named Hailey at the public tender in the Oasis Hotel?
She has heart disease. Her father colluded with Armond to kill someone so that she could get a heart
transplant, though he ended up in jail later on after he misappropriated some funds for his company.â
