Chapter 492

Ice and Fire

"That's alright. I've got nothing else to do at the moment, so I got here early. Besides, it's not far from Amy's school. Once school is over, we can just walk over together, " Derek's voice sweetened at the mention of Amy. It was obvious that he considered Amy in most things and cared a great deal for her.

"Derek, I didn't expect the relationship between you and Amy to flourish so quickly, " Chery quipped lightly. She wanted to have a relaxed atmosphere for what she was really here to talk about so he wouldn't feel so overwhelmed.

"As did you and Jackson! Once you meet the right person, time isn't a consideration anymore." Derek smiled at Cherry.

"That is true. I'm so happy to see you so committed with Amy. Please, treat her well, " Cherry replied sweetly.

"That's for sure!" Derek agreed firmly. He paused as he remembered what Jackson had said. "Jackson told me you have something to talk with me about. What is it, Cherry?"

Once Derek asked, Cherry felt ready to enter into the subject. She glanced at her watch: there were still three hours until Amy was finished with school. That should be enough.

"Derek, I'm afraid that what I'm going to ask is going to surprise you. So, please, prepare yourself." Cherry felt awkward as she finally began to delve into the questions that had been burning in her mind since the test results came back.

"What on earth do you need to ask?" Derek smiled, but furrowed his brow as he asked.

"I asked Jackson to set up our meeting because I don't want him to doubt my intentions. I told him I wanted to speak with you about your relationship with Amy, but what I really need to speak with you about is Mond, " Cherry said truthfully, staring straight at her husband's best friend.

It wasn't hard for Derek to roughly guess what Cherry wanted to ask with the mention of Mond. It was enough though to surprise him and he twiddled his thumbs anxiously.

Cherry watched his facial expression. She knew he must know what she was planning to ask, or at least have guessed at it. He was a smart man.

As Derek neglected to respond, Cherry removed the test results from her handbag and handed them to Derek.

"Read it!" Cherry directed.

"What's this?" Derek's voice broke with doubt as he looked at Cherry.

"You will understand if you read it, " she replied.

He stared at Cherry a touch longer before looking through the papers she had given him. What he saw stunned him.

"Cherry, this..." Derek trailed off. He had never expected Cherry would have even thought to use Jackson's and Mond's hairs to get a paternity test, let alone actually have done it. This shouldn't have happened.

"I know it's probably sudden for me to show you this. I had a strong feeling earlier and that's why I did the test: to confirm my suspicions. I won't tell anyone about this, " Cherry told him casually and calmly. Almost as if she were just talking about something ordinary. "I will not tell Jackson or Mond.

You are the only other person who has seen this report other than me."

Trying to hide his astonishment, Derek tried to appear calm on the surface. He looked into Cherry's eyes. "What do you want to know?"

"Their past, " Cherry answered bluntly.

"You could just ask Jackson. As his wife, he'd likely tell you. He wouldn't hide it from you, " Derek told her. He knew Jackson had once intended to tell her everything, but hadn't had the right chance to. And after that, so much happened that Jackson became too busy and must have forgotten to talk to her about it.

"I wouldn't get the side I want. If Jackson told me, I'd see Mond from Jackson's point of view. If you tell me, I'll see their relationship from a bystander, " Cherry explained.

"But..." Embarrassment flushed his cheeks. He hadn't discussed this with Jackson. If Derek spilled the beans with Cherry, would Jackson blame him?

After all, it was the Chu Family's business. As an outsider, he felt it was disrespectful to talk about it to Cherry without their blessing.

Observant of his face, Cherry grew concerned. "Are you scared that Jackson will get mad at you?"

Derek nodded. "Yes. After all, it's the Chu Family's affair and it's kind of..." He spoke frankly.

Cherry had guessed it would be like this earlier. Instead of getting anxious or impatient, she simply sat quietly, considering. "What if I show you something else in exchange? Would you tell me then?"

"Cherry, we are good friends. We don't need an exchange or negotiation. I just don't know how to tell you about this. Though I know everything about Jackson's family, I am not the right person to tell you. You know, Jackson is my best friend. I worry about him, " Derek confessed. Besides, since Cherry already knew the relationship between Jackson and Mond, she could simply ask either of them. Both knew clearly, and would be forced to admit it upon seeing the test report. Moreover, Jackson or Mond had much more right to decide whether Cherry should know. They were the two involved, not Derek. Derek was just an outsider. How could he tell the Chu Family's private affairs to others, even with great consideration? Even though it was Cherry, he still had to think hard on it. Cherry is the main person Jackson wanted to protect. This knowledge may put her in danger.

Watching his indecision, Cherry handed him another paper from her handbag. "Take a look at this."

Doubt filling his expression, Derek read the paper. Eyes widening, he looked at the woman opposite him.

"Cherry, are..." He couldn't believe it. "Are you pregnant?"

"Yes, " she nodded.

"What wonderful news! Why didn't Jackson tell me?" Derek exclaimed happily.

"He doesn't know yet, " Cherry replied, keeping eye contact.

His doubt turned to disbelief. "What's going on?" he asked. "Why haven't you told him?"

"Derek, I don't want to live like I did, struggling with my child five years ago. I want to protect my family. Mond is a member of that family. I want to know his history with my Jackson and the Chu Family." Cherry's face became hard to read.
