Love of a Queen: Chapter 26
Love of a Queen: A New Reign Mafia Romance (New Reign Mafia Duet Book 2)
The first voice I heard was Bastianâs. âIf she wants to order them for the room, we donât care.â
âWell, I do. Thereâs no point to a hundred bouquets of flowers. Men donât care about flowers.â Jettâs voice sounded perturbed.
âHe will. Those flowers sort of smell like Katie. So heâll love them,â Vick said in a lighter tone than everyone else Iâd heard so far.
Silence stretched long enough for me to grow concerned. I didnât know what the hell Iâd woken up to, but the fact that Katie wasnât answering had me opening my eyes.
âWhereâs Kate-Bait?â The second the words left my mouth, the second I opened my eyes, everything came back to me.
She jumped up from my bedside to hover over my face, squeezing my hand. âYouâre awake,â she whispered.
I didnât answer her. I took in her curls, the way they fell around her face, how they almost bounced with the slight tilt of her head when I didnât respond.
âCan you hear me?â she asked, a frown forming fast.
âOf course I can hear you,â I grumbled and winced when I tried to shift in the bed.
âWhat the fuck, Rome? Then answer me!â She shoved me in the shoulder and I winced.
âJesus, woman.â I didnât ask or even wait for a sorry. Iâd be waiting forever.
âIâm scared as hell.â Her voice shook as she said it. A steadying breath seemed to calm her a little. âCan you feel your legs?â
âRight. We need to know, do you think youâre paralyzed? Do you have amnesia?â Vick called out loudly from the foot of my bed.
âHeâs not deaf, Vick.â Brey had inched her way up and grabbed my other hand. âGlad youâre talking, Rome.â
âWell, Iâm convinced at this point, Katie wouldnât have had it any other way.â Vick kept rambling. âSheâd have found the serial murderer inside her. Sheâs stacking up more bodies than you at this point and had you died or been permanently injured, yeah, that would have sent her over the edge.â
Jett rolled his eyes and grabbed her elbow. âLetâs go.â
âWhat? Phantom, you know Iâm right.â Vick looked affronted.
âWeâre going, Vick.â Jett motioned to the room and everyone started walking out, but Katie grabbed Breyâs hand and those two stared at one another. Bastian patted my leg before he left.
Vick and Jett followed the rest out as Vick yelled, âIâm still ordering the flowers. Youâll want them before they discharge you!â
Brey shook her head. âSheâs out of control.â
Katie nodded but didnât say anything for a long time. She sat there holding Breyâs hand over my chest, and I let the silence stretch, knowing she was working through something.
âIâm used to plowing ahead, guys. Iâm used to not feeling anything and then having to move on.â Her moon eyes glistened with tears that hadnât spilled yet. âIâm feeling way more than I usually do,â Katie whispered to her friend over me. It was a plea from her, a question I couldnât understand between two friends whoâd known one another long enough to share an unspoken bond.
âItâs fucking awful.â Breyâs fingers squeezed Katieâs. âI think you told me once, though, that it doesnât get better but it doesnât really get worse either, right? This will be kind of like that. Pregnancy and the kid and worrying about this guy hereâit wonât get better in the sense that youâll always worry. But it wonât get worse either. Youâll get to feel that freaking love, Katie. You wouldnât trade that for anything, right?â
âI donât think Rome would let me even if I tried,â she choked out.
âNot gonna happen. You can handle it,â I grumbled.
She squeezed my hand and Brey got up to leave, waving at both of us but not saying a word.
âHmâ¦â I stared at her hair. âMaybe your hairâs out of control.â
âYeah, no time for straightening with you in the hospital.â
âThatâs all it took to get them back?â
She rolled her moon grey eyes at me. âThe curls? They donât scream lethal, do they? Theyâre too wild.â
âTheyâre fucking beautiful. Youâre fucking beautiful to wake up to.â
âNot in a hospital.â She sniffed and looked up toward the ceiling. âJesus, weâre in a hospital and you were dead. Dead for too fucking long.â
The way her voice shook, how she tried to hold back her fear, I wanted to comfort her. âIâm fine,â I ground out, sure as hell I was about to die from the pain in my side.
She sucked in a breath and jerked her hands away from me. âSorry. Sorry.â
I shook my head and waved her off. My pain didnât matter. I tried to lift my head but felt the pain in my side too much.
I tried to sit up again. The pain ripped through me; the wound screamed for me to lie down. The sweat started to pour from my body. I didnât care. I tried again, and this time Katie gasped as I shoved up from my elbows and we saw the wound had bled through from my back onto the sheets.
She moved toward the door, âWe need a fucking doctor right now.â
I grabbed her hand before she walked away and yanked her back toward me. I gripped her upper arms and straightened her stance so that she faced me directly. I took in every inch of her. She had a bruise on her face that I ran my thumb over, and she had a cut on her lip that I dragged a finger down. âMy baby still in you?â
Iâd blacked out when theyâd shown up with her. I knew theyâd brought her there to kill me off. Ivan wanted her removed after he discovered she wouldnât deliver him the great grandchild heâd always wanted. I knew sheâd be tested, but I knew sheâd find a way too. That woman was badass where I couldnât be, even without any of us by her side.
She jerked out a nod and her chin trembled before she sucked in a quick breath and straightened, blinking back her tears. âSheâs in there safe and sound.â
âYou have to offer yourself and her on a platter for me to be here?â
âIn some way, I guess. I didnât fight him. I told him to let the bratva pick. I wasnât going to fight it out with him. This is a chess game, not a fist fight. I did what I had to do.â
âDonât ever do it again, got it?â
âIâll always save you, monster.â Her stare was hard, unmoving.
âSave my baby and yourself first, Cleo.â
âMy blood is your blood, monster. I bleed, you bleed. You bleed, I do too. We need you.â
âWell, you got me, I guess. The queen reigns, huh?â
âThe bratva took down Ivan for me. They drove you here.â
âNo shit?â I said, surprised. I knew she could do it. I just didnât know when or if itâd be before I died. Ivan wanted my head. I thought for sure heâd get it after that injection and being shot.
âYeah, no shit. Next time you decide to bleed out, I need you to make sure you do it slower.â
I laughed at her order and then wheezed when the pain hit me like a freight train.
âJesus Christ. You need pain meds.â
I grabbed her and pulled her mouth down on mine. âI need you.â
âYou got me. Forever and ever.â
âYou did it, Cleo,â I whispered as I stared into her silver eyes. âYou won their trust.â
She shook her head, her mess of curls weaving back and forth. âNo, Rome. We earned it.â
