Gu Zi bid farewell to Yang Zhen and took Su Bing and Su Le to a state-run restaurant outside the school for lunch.
Su Bing had a physical fitness test in the afternoon, so she wanted him to eat well. Going home would take too long, so eating out was a convenient change of pace.
During lunch, Su Bing relayed the professorsâ comments to Gu Zi and handed her the business card the female professor had given him. âMom, Su Le spoke in a foreign language in front of the professors, and they overheard her. One of them gave me this card and said her language talent shouldnât be wasted. She suggested we start nurturing it from a young age and asked you to get in touch.â
Gu Zi listened with surprise as Su Bing recounted what had happened, turning to Su Le in awe. âMy little Lele, you followed your brother inside and even caught the professorsâ attention?â
Su Le nodded, excited by the experience, and began chattering away. âMommy, I met the professors! Theyâre all so old and wear glassesâ¦â
Su Le was too engrossed in sharing to notice the worry in Gu Ziâs eyes. Ever since she discovered her daughterâs remarkable language skills, Gu Zi had known that Su Le wasnât an ordinary child. Luckily, Su Le was still young and didnât attend school, so her talent wasnât obvious to others, sparing Gu Zi the worry of unwanted attention for now.
But Gu Zi hadnât anticipated todayâs events.
Su Leâs abilities had immediately caught the attention of two professors. While it was certainly out of their love for talent, Gu Zi wasnât convinced it was a good thing.
Su Le was still just a child; sheâd rather see her daughter enjoy a simple and happy childhood over any intense nurturing of her gifts.
Still, the professorsâ suggestion was reasonable. Cultivating Su Leâs talent from a young age would benefit her future development. Since she couldnât make the decision alone, Gu Zi decided to discuss it with Su Shen that evening and let him weigh in.
In the afternoon, the results of the academic tests were announced. Out of more than a hundred students who participated, only twenty-one qualified for the next round of physical fitness testing. After the physical test, another six students were eliminated, leaving only fifteen to advance to the prestigious Little Genius Training Program.
Both Su Bing and Xu Sheng made it into the final list, although Xu Sheng placed last in the physical fitness test.
When Huang Fei heard this, her face went pale with anger, and she glared furiously at her son, disappointed beyond words. Xu Sheng, unable to meet her gaze, kept his head down. Yet, despite her frustration, Huang Fei maintained a proud front in front of others, unwilling to admit any perceived weakness.
âWe Xu family members have been scholars for generations,â she declared pointedly. âNo trace of farm labor in our genes, so itâs only natural to lack in brute strength. Physical ability isnât what makes a good student; academics are what really matter. And since my son passed the test, heâs more than qualified.â
Her words carried a not-so-subtle implication that the Su familyâs rural roots explained Su Bingâs top rank in the fitness test and that it was hardly something to brag about.
Other parents exchanged glances and rolled their eyes. After all, Su Bing hadnât just topped the fitness testâhe also ranked first academically. If Huang Feiâs son was from a scholarly family, why didnât he take first place academically?
Gu Zi overheard but didnât bother to engage. Her sonâs strength was obvious to anyone paying attention. First in academics and first in fitnessâno argument was needed. She had no intention of wasting time debating with Huang Fei.
Fuming on the way home, Huang Feiâs frustration had reached its peak, and Xu Sheng didnât dare make a sound.@@novelbin@@
When they arrived home, he relaxed slightly as his mother diverted her irritation toward the housemaid. Xu Sheng sighed with relief, wondering if he should tell his father how much his motherâs behavior frightened him.
Late that night, lights still illuminated the Su familyâs living room. Gu Zi hadnât gone upstairs, waiting instead for Su Shen to come home so they could discuss Su Leâs situation.
After dozing off for the third time, she awoke to the sound of Su Shenâs car pulling up in the driveway. She walked outside just in time to see him striding up to the house.
As he passed the dogâs kennel, their dog, Big Yellow, wagged its tail in greeting. Su Shen patted its head affectionately before heading over to the outdoor faucet to wash his hands.
Once heâd finished, he joined Gu Zi inside and spoke to her gently. âWhy are you still up so late? Couldnât this have waited until morning? You have so much to do these daysâstudying, managing everything. Itâs important for you to rest.â
