The New Tail

How to Train Your Dragon

(Y/N)'s P.O.V

"I never got to patch his arm," I whisper with a sigh, staring at the piece of food attached to the stick I was cooking over the bonfire.

"-- and with one twist, he took my hand, and swallowed it whole!" Gobber continues, making me cringe. "And I saw the look on his face..." He waves around the turkey on his hand. "I was delicious! He must have passed the word because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg."

The others gasp as I look at Hiccup, tilting my head as he blankly stares at the fire with a frown.

I set my hand on his arm, startling him for a second before he relaxes, slightly smiling at me before watching Gobber.

"Isn't it weird to think your hand was inside a dragon?" Fishlegs questions, waving around his two large chicken legs. "Like, if your mind was still in control of it, you could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing its heart or something."

"I swear, I'm so angry right now!" Snotlout growls, waving around his chicken. "I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop of the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face!"

Gobber hums in disagreement, wiping his mouth before ripping off the wing of the turkey.

"No. It's the wings and the tail you really want. If it can't fly," he wags the wing around, "it can't get away."

Hiccup and I look at each other with wide eyes, realization hitting us as to why the Night Fury was unable to fly out of the clearing.

"A downed dragon is a dead dragon." Gobber states slowly and yawns, rising and stretching, "all right. I'm off to bed. You should be, too. Tomorrow we get to the big boys, slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare."

Third Person P.O.V

(Y/N) nods as Hiccup tilts his head, motioning for them to leave. Both set their food down, rushing away from the group of kids as they excitedly chatter.

"But who will win the honor of killing it?"

"It's gonna be me," Tuffnut smirks, leaning back. "It's my destiny, see?"

Astrid looks up, softly gasping when she sees the two gone.

"Your mom let you get a tattoo?" Fishlegs questions in awe.

"It's not a tattoo. It's a birthmark." Tuffnut states back defensively.

Astrid rises, looking over and watching Hiccup and (Y/N) rush away together.

"I've been stuck with you since birth, and that was never there before," Ruffnut replies.

Astrid silently debates going after them before she narrows her eyes, shaking her head before turning away and joining the others once more.

"Yes it was! You've just never seen me from the left side until now."

...

Hiccup opens his journal, (Y/N) handing him his pencil and watching as he redraws the other half of the tail-fin on the Night Fury. They look at one another, nodding with determined smiles.

...

(Y/N) fans the coals as Hiccup uses the bellows to light them, heating up the metal piece.

...

She peeks over his shoulder as he hammers the hot metal into a small pole before she drags the barrel of water over, backing away as he dips the metal into it.

...

Hiccup sets the metal along the blueprint he made, nodding and grinning.

...

Hiccup removes the nails from a shield, heating them up before shaping them.

...

He quickly works on combining the pieces together as (Y/N) shapes the leather, lining it up with the blue print before nodding and handing it to Hiccup.

He smiles and nods, sliding it into place before holding the tail-fin open.

Both nod, and he fans it shut.

...

The next day...

"Hey, Toothless," Hiccup calls in a sing song, approaching the Night Fury with a basket. "Brought breakfast! I hope you're hungry," he grunts, dumping the basket as Toothless eagerly sniffs at the air.

"Gross," (Y/N) lightly snickers as Hiccup avoids the slimy fish.

"We've got salmon, some nice Icelandic cod... And a whole smoked eel," Hiccup lists off as Toothless sniffs at the fish with purrs.

He suddenly snarls, lowly growling as he backs away with wide eyes. Hiccup notices and frowns with confusion, and slowly grabs the eel. He lifts it slightly, making Toothless roar in fear with his wings spread as Hiccup jumps.

"No, no, no, no, no!" Hiccup frantically yells with realization, tossing the eel away and wiping his hand on his vest. "No, it's okay. Yeah... We don't really like eel much, either."

(Y/N) shakes her head with a grin, holding her own basket of fish in front of her as she looks around.

"Hey... (D/N)?" She calls, testing out the name as she waddles around, the basket in her hands weighing her down. "I brought you breakfast, too!"

(Y/N) gasps and jumps before smiling, (D/N) appearing in front of her with a curious rumble and a head tilt. She drops the basket, dumping it over as his ears perk up, his tail lightly swaying as he approaches the fish.

(D/N) sniffs at it, chittering as he begins to eagerly eat the fish.

"Now... I'm just going to... be over here, cleaning your... wound," (Y/N) slowly says as she walks around to his left arm, looking at the wound with leaves and dirt rubbed in it.

...

Toothless munches on the fish, rumbling with satisfaction as Hiccup slowly walks around him.

"That's it... That's it, just stick with the good stuff," Hiccup says in a light tone, jumping as Toothless rumbles loudly before eating another fish. "And don't you mind me. I'll just... Be back here. Minding my own... Business..."

He sets down the prosthetic tail-fin, slowly scooting it next to Toothless' tail and flinching when it moves.

Hiccup glances at Toothless, sighing and nodding when he sees him still distracted while eating.

...

(Y/N) slowly sets her bag down, reaching forward and carefully taking one of the leaves off his wound. (D/N) pauses for a second when he feels this, making her hold her breath before sighing with relief as he resumes eating.

She quickly and gently takes off the other leaves, wincing at the sight of the wound.

"Okay... This might be more difficult than I thought," she mumbles to herself.

...

Hiccup sighs as Toothless moves his tail again, gasping as his tail flickers up.

"It's okay!"

He grunts, pressing the tail down and yelping as Toothless wags it around. He yelps again as he was dragged forward, Toothless shoving his head in the basket. Hiccup sighs heavily as he turns his body and scoots the tail-fin next to Toothless' tail.

...

(Y/N) lightly applies the now-wet wash cloth to the wound, holding her breath when she hears (D/N) grumble softly. (D/N) stops eating for a moment, slowly lifting and turning his head back to look at the girl.

She nervously laughs and smiles as he blinks at her slowly, glancing down at her hand pressed against his arm. His ears perk and flatten for a moment before his eyes return to her, a quiet snort leaving him.

(D/N) rumbles lowly before laying down completely, angling his body to the side so she could reach the wound easier on his arm. He turns back and continues to eat, his tail slowly swishing.

(Y/N) sighs in relief, smiling at (D/N) before continuing to clean his wound, the dragon unbothered and even softly purring.

...

Hiccup grunts, panting lightly as he begins adjusting the tail-fin.

"Okay, here we go," he nods, tying the straps.

Toothless pauses and slowly sits up, the basket falling from his head as he wiggles his tail-fin. His wings and mouth fall as Hiccup finishes adjusting the tail.

...

(Y/N) smiles as she wraps the last part of the wound up, tying the bandage and sighing softly with a nod as she rises.

"There you go." She whispers as she grins, looking over his bandaged arm.

(D/N) purrs softly as he rises, still limping a bit. He looks down at his bandaged arm before looking down at (Y/N), leaning closer. She holds her breath with wide, nervous eyes, blinking quickly when he quickly presses his snout against her forehead, almost like a boop. She lets out a breathless laugh as his ears flicker, his gaze focusing behind the girl and his eyes widening at the sight of Toothless' wings opening.

(Y/N) tilts her head and looks over at Hiccup, her eyes widening and her face falling.

...

Hiccup grunts, adjusting the leather one last time, not noticing Toothless opening his wings.

He sits back with a sigh, nodding.

"That's not too bad, it works..." he mumbles to himself, blissfully unaware of what was about to happen.

"Hiccup!!" (Y/N) shouts, making him look at her before grunting with a scream as Toothless takes off flying.

He watches as (Y/N) becomes smaller on the ground, holding onto Toothless' tail for dear life as he screams. (Y/N) watches with wide eyes, (D/N)'s ears perked as he blinks rapidly at the sight.

"No, no, no, no, no!" Hiccup screams, pausing when he notices the tail-fin was fanned shut.

Toothless roars as he begins to fall, making (Y/N) gasp and (D/N) roar as he takes off flying, racing to their aid. He flies under Toothless, ready to stop their fall before his ears perk up as Hiccup reopens the tail-fin, causing Toothless to soar back upwards.

(D/N) stays in the air for a moment before returning to (Y/N)'s side, both watching the two fly with opened mouths.

"It actually worked!" (Y/N) breathes out with a light laugh, subconsciously resting her hand on (D/N)'s neck as he chitters lightly with a head tilt.

"It's working!" Hiccup yells to (Y/N), knowing she couldn't hear.

He turns the tail-fin, directing Toothless to fly around and back down. Toothless soars over the pond, Hiccup looking at the tail with a grin.

"Yes, yes! We did it!" He laughs, smiling widely.

Toothless pauses, looking down and spotting Hiccup on his tail. He swings his tail around as he turns, making Hiccup yell as he skids along the pond before falling in, (Y/N) wincing.

Toothless roars when he begins to wobble, his tail-fin shut. He skids along the water, falling in as (D/N) flinches with a light rumble of a laugh.

"Yeah!" Hiccup cheers, making (Y/N) laugh and shake her head.
