Chapter 990
His unwanted wife, the world’s coveted genius

âInnocent?â Lucas pinned him with a steely gaze, his lips curling into a mocking smile. âWhat about my wife, then? Wasnât she innocent?â
Brentâs face changed drastically.
But before he could say another word, Lucas gave the order, saying, âDo it!â
âYes, Mr. Clark.â The bodyguard held the syringe as he slowly approached the woman.
Brentâs eyes went wide with desperation. âFine! Iâll talk! Iâll talk!â At that point, there really wasnât anything else he could do.
Lucas raised his hand.
The bodyguard carefully put the syringe away, then grabbed the woman and dragged her out of the room.
âPlease let my wife go,â Brent begged again. âShe really has nothing to do with this! She doesnât know anything. Please, if you let her go, Iâll tell you everything. Everything!â
âDo you think youâre in any position to bargain with me?â Lucas spat. âYouâd better confess while I still have the patience to put up with you. Tell me every single detail, orâ¦â He didnât need to finish his sentence.
âI will talk!â Brent took a deep, shaky breath. He spoke slowly, his voice sounding utterly defeated. âIt was just any ordinary day. Someone came to our house and offered us five hundred thousand dollars to carry out a task for them. It seemed simple enough. At a certain time, I had to strike my brotherâs chest with something heavy, right over his heart. Then, we were supposed to take him to the Grand Plains General Hospital.â
After a pause, he continued, âHe needed to undergo surgery, of course, and the doctors did their routine of asking about my brotherâs medical history and checking whether he had any contagious diseases. We were instructed to hide the fact that he had AIDS. Thatâs it. Thatâs all, really. The person told us that once they confirmed the virus had taken hold, they would give us another five hundred thousand dollars.â
Brentâs breathing grew heavier. âA million dollars was just too tempting! How many years of hard labor on a construction site would it take me to earn that much? So, Iâ¦â
Lucasâ face darkened, his teeth gritted. âSo you thought about how long it would take you to earn a million. I bet you never even considered if youâd live long enough to spend it all.â
Every word dripped with murderous intent. Brentâs ashen face grew even paler.
Truth be told, he had begun regretting everything the moment he had been captured and tortured.
Only then did it finally dawn on him that he and his brother had crossed dangerous peopleâthe kind of people who could make their entire existence disappear with a single word.
âWhat did the person look like? Any distinguishing features? I need the time and date of their initial visit.â This came from Gordon.
Brent didnât have the nerve to hide even a smidgen of the truth from them. He answered all of Gordonâs questions and provided everything he could remember about their mysterious visitorâs appearance.
When Lucas emerged from the room later, he still exuded a cold aura. âI want a thorough investigation into this matter!â he commanded. âHave people look into Verena and Kylee. Find out if theyâre involved in this in any capacity!â
