Chapter 88
His unwanted wife, the world’s coveted genius

âBelinda really has changed a lot over these three years,â Vincent said, exhaling slowly. After a pause, he added, âRyan told me that Harold suggested you and Belinda should wait a month before getting the divorce?â
âYes,â Lucas replied.
Vincent offered a small smile and asked, âAnd your thoughts on that?â
Lucas pressed his lips into a thin line and then said with a deep tone, âIâve made a bet with my father⦠Iâll go along with his plans for Belinda and me this month. If I still feel the same about the divorce afterward, he will agree to back off.â
Vincentâs eyebrows lifted in response. He remained quiet, simply observing Lucas.
With a defiant yet assured smile, Lucas said, âThereâs no way I will lose this time.â
Vincent, catching Lucasâ confident air, asked with an underlying meaning, âSo, if you go through with the divorce from Belinda, do you plan to marry Verena next?â
At this, Lucasâ smile stiffened. His lips tightened briefly as he fell silent, his response revealing his thoughts.
âIt appears⦠I was right in my earlier assumption,â Vincent suddenly said.
Lucas turned to look at Vincent, a slight frown marking his face.
Vincent didnât waste any time beating around the bush and said directly, âIt seems like there is something wrong in your relationship with Verena.â
Lucas paused for a moment. His voice low and subdued, he said, âI donât even remember how it started, but⦠Iâve lost that feeling.â
Vincent nodded and replied, âIâve noticed it for some time.â He then asked, âWhatâs your plan now?â
Lucas replied with little emotion, âI will marry Verena.â
Hearing that, Vincent furrowed his brows slightly. With a steady voice, Lucas explained, âI owe that to her. Itâs my promise and my way to try and right the wrongs.â He narrowed his eyes as he continued, âVerena has suffered too much because of me over these last three years.â
Vincent responded after thinking for a while, âYet, what Verena truly wants might be different. She loves you. What she wants is your love for her, not a gesture born out of obligation.â
Lucasâ eyes briefly flickered, and he said coldly, âOffering her this marriage is all I can do at the moment. After I divorce Belinda, Iâll tell Verena the truth about the matter. If she chooses not to accept it, Iâll respect her decision and find another way to compensate her.â
Vincent stayed silent, knowing his words would not change Lucasâ decision.
Just then, Ryan and Verena arrived.
âLucas.â Verena walked over and took a seat beside Lucas.
She then turned to Vincent with a gentle tilt of her head. âVincent, good to see you back!â
Vincent smiled in response.
Ryan collapsed onto the sofa. âVincent, your timing is impeccable. Iâm in misery and need a drink.â
Vincent raised an eyebrow, asking, âIs it because of the Thomas familyâs matter?â
