Chapter 68
His unwanted wife, the world’s coveted genius

She pulled out her phone, tapping on her contacts app in preparation to add Verenaâs number.
Verenaâs expression stiffened slightly, though she maintained a polite yet firm smile. âNo need for that, Mrs. Clark, but thank you for the offer.â
âOh? Whatâs the matter? Why donât you want my number, Miss Reed?â Belinda chuckled, her tone laced with mockery as she met Verenaâs gaze. âIs it that your ailments can only be soothed by Lucas?â
Verenaâs composed facade momentarily faltered, a flicker of discomfort crossing her face as Belindaâs sharp words struck a nerve.
âDefinitely not!â Verena responded instantly, her voice betraying no hint of sincerity. She then offered a smile and added, âI wouldnât want to trouble you, Mrs. Clark. But since youâre so generous, Iâll happily accept your offer. Hereâs my numberâ¦â
After saving Verenaâs number on her phone, Belinda made a quick call to verify it. âAll set then. Miss Reed, anytime you feel ill, even in the middle of the night, just call me.â
âThank you, Mrs. Clark,â Verena said, managing a tight smile.
âYouâre welcome, Miss Reed,â Belinda replied.
When Lucas returned with the medicine for Verenaâs fever, he watched her take it before departing with Belinda.
Standing by the window, Verena watched as Lucas and Belinda walked away together, her hands curling into fists involuntarily. She had underestimated Belinda!
Belinda was no longer the weak and humble woman she remembered; she was now her rival in love, a formidable opponent. If she didnât make her move quickly, she risked losing Lucas to Belinda.
Determination hardened in Verenaâs gaze.
The next morning, in the Cardiac Surgery Department of Grand Plains General Hospital, Belinda was assisting Deputy Chief Physician Darlene with patient rounds. As they entered a room, Belinda caught sight of a middle-aged woman seated on a couch.
The woman stood up as they entered, saying, âDr. Mitchell.â
âMrs. Singh,â Darlene greeted with a polite nod.
Jordy, the patient in the hospital room, was still asleep.
He was the man who had collapsed at Belindaâs welcome banquet that night. After discussing Jordyâs health and the arrangements for his surgery with Amanda, Darlene and her team continued on their rounds.
After completing the rounds, instead of heading back to her office, Belinda returned to Jordyâs room for a follow-up. She knocked gently on the door and then pushed it open.
As Amanda caught sight of Belinda, she hesitated for a moment before asking, âIs there an issue with my husbandâs health, doctor?â
