Chapter 2
The Understated Dragon Lord
Jennifer stood frozen, her face sprayed with exhaust fumes and her expensive attire covered in the dust kicked up by the carâs wheels. Her thirty thousand dollar heels and fifty thousand dollar dress were now no better than second-hand bargains. The pricey makeup on her face had been touched by the dust, and she looked no better than a homeless wanderer. But above all, she was utterly stunned by the conversation she had overheard.
Jessica was Danielâs fiancée? Jessica had sent David to pick him up? And she referred to him as the honorable Mr. Daniel Perkins? He was just a country bumpkin, a loathsome toadâhonorable Mr. Daniel Perkins my foot! He was nothing but a con artist, a greedy, lecherous loser! Thereâs no way Jessica was going to marry him. She must be planning to cancel the wedding, just like Jennifer wanted to. This mess was all that loserâs fault. She had to make him pay! Meanwhile, half an hour later, the Rolls-Royce pulled into the lavish estate belonging to The Matthews, a villa complex spanning thousands of square meters, with pavilions, murmuring streams, lush greenery, and birds chirping amongst the flowers. Every step revealed a scene more breathtaking than the lastâit was a Wonderland in the heart of New York City, exclusively for the prominent Matthews family. Daniel was ushered into the living room where David served him a cup of top-notch coffee before leaving. Click-clack, click-clack! The elegant rhythm of high heels on the floor announced the arrival of a stunning beauty. Words could only defile her enchanting presence. This was Jessica Matthews, the eldest daughter of The Matthews family, president of The Matthews Organization (TMO), and New Yorkâs number one beauty! At just one glance, Daniel was spellbound. âAre you Daniel, my fiancé?â âErr⦠yes.â Daniel snapped back to reality. Daniel, having already been dumped once, eagerly fetched the marriage contract and handed it to Jessica. âYouâve come to call off the marriage, right?
Hereâs the contract. From now on, w
eâre strangers. Donât worry, I wonât appear before you again, nor will I tell anyone you were once my fiancée.â âWhen did I say I wanted to cancel it?â âYouâre not canceling?â âThis contract was drawn up by my grandfather, and I honor his decision. I will marry you. Weâll register our marriage tomorrow, but before that, I have some conditions.â âWhat conditions?â âIâm marrying you solely because of this contract, not out of love, so no wedding ceremony. You canât tell anyone weâre married. Publicly, you are my assistant, not my husband. Plus, Iâm giving you a year as a trial period. If you can make me fall in love with you, weâll have a real ceremony and be true husband and wife. If I still feel nothing after a year, weâll divorce. One more thing, if we do become a true couple, I have a gift for you. Itâs an unsightly, wilted herb called the Dragon Seal Grass.â The Dragon Seal Grass? Danielâs heart leaped with excitement. âUh, if after a year you still donât fancy me, can I keep the Dragon Seal Grass as a memento? You said it was ugly and wilty, so itâs probably not worth much. Just as a keepsake.â âNo way! Thatâs a gift for the man who truly wins my heart!â Daniel: ⦠Just then, Jessicaâs phone rang. âWhat? Iâm on my way!â Hanging up, she turned to Daniel, âMy grandfatherâs critically ill. We need to go to the hospital now.â âOkay!â Clutching his dusty plastic bag as if it were a treasure, Daniel hurried after her. âWhy are you carrying that? No oneâs going to steal it.â âIt might come in handy.â Speechless but too preoccupied to care, Jessica left it at that. At the hospitalâs emergency room, Jessicaâs secretary, Brittany Cunningham, paced anxiously. As Jessica and Daniel arrived, the emergency room doors burst open, and the doctors emerged. âMichael, how is my grandfather?â âWeâve tried everything, but heâs beyond our help. However, thereâs still a breath of life in him. If you can get The Great Stephens here, perhaps thereâs hope.â âThe Great Stephens?â âHeâs the one who can snatch lives from the hands of death, The Great StephensâChristopher Stephens! Heâs New Yorkâs number one mystical doctor, but heâs been resting for a long time. Itâs going to be very difficult to persuade him to act.â As Michael finished speaking⦠âMr. Christopher is here.â
Andrew Armstrong walked in with an elderly gentlemanâthe renowned Christopher. An Easterner whose arrival date in New York was unknown, people were only aware of his miraculous healing techniques. Christopherâs methods had never failed. He approached the bed, lifted Josephâs eyelids, and checked his pulse. âMaster Christopher, how is my grandfather?â âThe situation is grave. Only my ancestral Nine Dry Needling technique stands a chance. Not even gods could save him otherwise.â âPlease, Master Christopher, save my grandfather, and The Matthews will repay you generously.â
âMiss Jessica, Iâm here at Mr. Andrewâs request, so saving your grandfather is up to him.â Andrew stepped forward, arrogantly bargaining, âJessica, you know what I want. Agree to marry me, and Master Christopher will save your grandfather. If you refuse, he wonât lift a finger, and your grandfather will meet his end. Remember, he is The Matthewsâ world, and if anything were to happen to him, The Matthews would be finished.â
