Chapter 34
Husband
Chapter 34
Adam scratched his head at Carlosâs meaningful smile and thought it over carefully. âIâve kept an eye on those three all the
time.â He couldnât make sense of it. âHow could he switch Mr. Nel out from under our noses?â No one could have done it.
Carlos asked, âDid you notice anyone fishy at that time?â
Adam shook his head but then remembered something. âDoes Mr. James count?â He had discovered something after going through the hospitalâs surveillance footage. âMr. James entered and left the hospital with a sports bag. Iâve no idea what was inside, but it seemed a bit heavy. Probably about Mr. Neilâs weight. Do you think Mr. James put Mr. Neil in the bag and carried him around?â
However, something was off. Adam pointed out, âThe hair and tissue samples used for the paternity test belong to the boy from last night. The test says that he is related to you.â
âAdam, what if Vera and the two children are still alive?â Carlos asked.
Adam jumped at his bold speculation. âNot impossible, Mr. Monroe. How can anyone survive such a massive fire? You might as well say the children possessed Mr. Neil. It might be more believableâ¦â Adamâs voice trailed off.
Carlos had insisted on rebuilding the mansion on the site of the fire, hoping that he could be reunited with the ghosts of Vera and his children.
Carlos did not answer. Adam sweated profusely.
The Monroe family said Vera and the two children died tragically, but as the survivor, Carlos didnât fare any better. Though his heart died with Vera, Carlos had to tough it out and take care of Neil. He had to protect his family and be on guard against the mastermind.
If it werenât for the fire five years ago, Carlos would have caught the mastermind and lived happily with Vera and the three childrenâ¦
It had been so close!
âItâs getting late. You can go. Continue to keep an eye on the three of them.â Carlos had already arranged additional personnel to protect Neil.
âYes, sir,â Adam responded.
Dayton came in before Adam left. âMr. Neil is throwing a fit in your bedroom. He broke a lot of thingsâ¦â
Vera leaned weakly on Jamesâs shoulder as their car sped off. She was too wiped out to do anything else. James accompanied her quietly until they were home.
âMummy!â The children rushed over to Vera when they saw her.
James glanced at the nanny, who tactfully left the room and closed the door.
âMummy, youâre finally back.â Catherine sniffled, sounding teary âDaddy is so bad. He hurt Samuel. I hate him. I wonât like him anymore.â
Vera noticed Samuelâs injury was almost healed. However, Samuel was still down. Veraâs heart ached. Samuel wouldnât easily forgive his father now.
