Chapter 50
Slave of the Onyx Dragon
VALKYRIE
Iâm darting between the bed and the bathroom for the fifth time in two days. Ever since I helped Zar, my stomachâs been in knots. Iâve been battling fevers, headaches, and nausea.
âYouâre okay, Valkyrie,â Mia reassures me, again.
âEnough, Mia,â I snap, tired of her repetitive comfort. Yesterday, Michael examined me and discovered that Zarâs poison is affecting me. Itâs not dangerous, but itâs going to be a nuisance for a few days. I wash my face and head back to Zarâs chamber.
Yesterday, Michael suggested moving Zar. Dimitri disagreed, but I had a say too. Dimitri left, feeling disrespected again. It hurt to see him glaring at me with such hatred, but he wouldnât listen.
âHeâs looking better,â Mia whispers.
âI know. We just have to wait for him to wake up,â I reply, reaching for a damp cloth. âWe need to clean him.â
Mia nods and starts gathering clean clothes.
âIâm missing a few things. Iâll be right back, okay?â Mia excuses herself. I sigh, grab the clothes, and start cleaning Zarâs arms.
As I bend to pick up a dropped cloth, a hand suddenly covers my mouth. I try to scream, but when I realize itâs Zar, I calm down.
Zarâs breathing is ragged, and he looks scared. I raise my hand to loosen his grip from my mouth. Seeing that Iâm calm, Zar slowly lets go.
âAre you okay?â I ask. Zar just stares at me, his eyes wide as he studies my face. I wait patiently as he reaches out to touch my face.
âZar?â I call his name. He gasps, lets go, and leans back. I cross my arms and watch him.
âSorry,â Zar mutters, his voice rough. I smile at him and reach for the water jug and goblet. Zar watches my every move.
âHere,â I offer. He takes the goblet and stares at it. âItâs not poisoned,â I assure him.
He takes a big gulp, closes his eyes, and sighs.
âHow am I still alive?â Zar asks, opening his eyes. I tilt my head, watching him curiously.
âI saved you,â I explain.
Zar looks me up and down, then stops.
âTamer?â Zar mutters. I glance at my mark.
âYes?â I respond, confused. âHow do you know?â
Zar meets my gaze, a conflicted look on his face.
âItâs okay,â I reassure him.
He smiles faintly, stands up, and turns his back to me. He peels something off his left shoulder blade, and I gasp. He has the same mark I do, with the new rune next to it.
âTheyâre the same?â I ask, stunned.
âIt seems so,â Zar replies, turning back to face me. âCan I ask where I am?â
âYouâre in the dragonâs horde,â I say, making him flinch. His hands shake as they reach for his lap. Heâs trying to be brave.
âThe dragonâs horde? Which one?â Zar asks, his voice shaky.
âOn Mount Errigal,â I tell him.
âWhat?â Zar stumbles back, hitting his head on the wall behind him.
âCalm down!â I urge, reaching for him. âNothingâs going to happen to you. I wonât let it!â
âHow can you be sure? The king of dragons will kill me,â Zar panics.
âHe wonât! Dimitri wonât touch you!â I snap. Zar frowns at me.
âWhat do you mean? Who are you?â Zar asks. His eyes are hopeful as he takes my hand.
âMy name is Valkyrie. Iâm the one who saved you and brought you here,â I tell him, smiling. Relief washes over his face.
âBut who are you exactly?â Zar asks again.
âIâm⦠Dimitriâs mate,â I admit.
âA tamer? Are you sure youâre his mate?â Zar asks.
Whatâs wrong with being a tamer?
âIs something wrong? Youâre asking me things I donât understand,â I say, frowning. I pinch the bridge of my nose as a headache starts to form.
âYes, what I mean is that a dragon canât have a tamer as a mate,â Zar explains with a sigh. âItâs hard to explain, sorry.â
âCanât?â I ask, shaking my head. The pounding in my head is starting again.
âYes⦠You need someone else. A fairy or mage can explain,â Zar says. âIâm surprised you havenât turned this place upside down.â
âWhat?â I snap, clutching my head. Feeling nauseous again, I cover my mouth and run to the bathroom.
I grip the bucket tightly as I throw up.
âHey, are you okay?â Zar asks, rubbing circles on my back.
âYesâ¦,â I manage to say. âItâs just the aftermath of healing you. Your poison was strong.â
âNow that you mention it, I was wondering who healed me,â Zar says. âMay I?â
I glance at him over my shoulder. He extends a hand, and I look at it skeptically.
âI can heal too,â Zar smiles. âIâm a tamer, but I have two abilities.â
âOh,â I say, reaching for his callused hand. I notice some thick scars.
âWhat happened to you?â I ask, moving my hands up his bare torso.
âThose?â Zar murmurs, a wry smile playing on his lips. âMy fatherâs doing.â
âYour what?â I gasp, taken aback. âHe did this to you?â
He nods, a sad look in his eyes. I canât help but stare at his body, the evidence of his fatherâs cruelty. How could a father do this to his own son?
âBut enough about me,â Zar says, pulling me out of my thoughts. Heâs grinning from ear to ear. Iâm taken aback, staring into his eyes, trying to understand.
âWhy are you smiling like that?â I ask, puzzled.
Zar chuckles softly, bringing my hand to his lips for a gentle kiss. He pulls back, still smiling.
âWell, I should be congratulating you. Youâre expecting, after all!â Zar grins.
âExpecting what?â I sputter, taken aback.
âThe next dragon king. Youâre carrying King Dimitriâs heir.â
