Chapter 37
Slave of the Onyx Dragon
VALKYRIE
âEat,â Dimitri insists for the fourth time.
âAnd Iâve told you, Iâm full,â I retort, my patience wearing thin.
âValkyrie?â Dimitriâs voice is a hiss as he brandishes the spoon.
âDimitri!â I snap back, my temper flaring. âI canât eat anymore.â
Weâve been at this for the past hour. Dimitriâs been hounding me to eat, but Iâve had my fill. Iâm stuffed. Why canât he get that?
âValkyrie, itâs for your own good,â Dimitri repeats, like a broken record.
âAnd Iâve told you, I canât. Iâll throw up!â I say, my annoyance with his persistence growing.
âLeave her be, Brother,â Damian interjects, sipping his wine. âYouâre going to make her sick.â
âHeâs right,â Mia chimes in, a giggle in her voice. âThe queen will get sick, Your Majesty.â
Rolling his eyes, Dimitri finally gives in, shoving the spoonful of food into his own mouth. Feeling uncomfortably full, I push back from the table and stand.
âWhere are you going?â Dimitri asks, his eyes following me.
âFor a walk,â I reply, avoiding his gaze. âI feel too stuffed.â
âIâll come with you,â Dimitri offers, standing and taking a swig of his wine.
I shake my head and head for the garden, quickening my pace when I hear Dimitriâs footsteps behind me.
âWhy the rush?â Dimitri asks, catching my hand.
âBecause youâre too persistent, and itâs getting on my nerves,â I snap, trying to pull my hand free.
âIâm just worried about you,â Dimitri says, pulling me back. I let out a sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose.
âEnough, Dimitri. Letâs just go,â I concede, giving in.
Iâve been feeling pretty good all day. Sure, thereâs the occasional cramp that hits me out of nowhere, but other than that, Iâve been fine.
Dimitri, on the other hand, has been like a dog with a bone, following me around all day. Doesnât he have anything better to do?
âI just remembered something,â Dimitri says as we walk side by side. âIrene and her people are ready for you. If you want to meet them.â
He glances at me, knowing full well Iâd rather put it off. But would it help me in some way if I did meet them?
âI know, I justâ¦,â I trail off, stopping in my tracks.
âIf you donât want to meet them, thatâs fine, Valkyrie. Iâll respect your decision,â Dimitri says, pulling me into a hug. I return the embrace, resting my head on his chest.
âThereâs something I wanted to talk to you about,â I say, lifting my head to look at him.
Dimitri looks down at me, then kisses my temple and smiles. âTell me. What is it?â he asks.
âI⦠Dimitri, I want Prince Cian to look into my mind,â I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Dimitriâs frown is immediate. He pulls back, looking at me with confusion.
âYou want what?â he asks, his voice a hiss.
âI want Prince Cian to check my mind. Iâ¦Iâve been having these strange dreams. Itâs like a voice,â I explain, fidgeting with my hands. âI told Michael about it.â
âAnd you didnât think to tell me until now?â Dimitri asks, his teeth clenched.
âI didnât know how to bring it up. And I know you donât want Prince Cian anywhere near me, but I need to find some answers about myself,â I insist.
âYou canât be serious, Valkyrie,â Dimitri says, pinching the bridge of his nose. He shakes his head, then grabs my hand and pulls me further away from the palace.
âCian isnât a good man. He wants something from you.â
âLike what?â I ask, confused. âAll Prince Cian has done is help me, Dimitri.â
âNO!â Dimitri shouts, his anger flaring. âCanât you see? He wants you! That man is obsessed with you, Valkyrie,â Dimitri says, gripping my arm tightly.
âWe donât know what he might do to you.â
I grab Dimitriâs hand, squeezing it tightly. âCanât you trust me?â I ask, my voice small.
âNO,â Dimitri spits out. Then, as if shocked by his own words, he releases my hand and looks away. A pang of hurt shoots through my chest. So Dimitri doesnât trust me?
âI seeâ¦,â I say, turning to walk away. âThatâs a shame, because I trusted youâ¦â

Angry and hurt, I decide I need some time alone. Iâm on my way to the library when I collide with someone. Why am I always bumping into people?
âYou okay?â the man asks. I look up and freeze. Who is this?
His hair is as black as Dimitriâs, his eyes as red as blood. He towers over me, easily six foot nine. His muscular, toned body is hard to ignore.
Who is this guy?
His eyes widen as he looks at me. He reaches out, helping me to my feet. I feel tiny standing next to him.
âUh, could you let go, please?â I mumble, staring at his rough hands on my arms.
Snapping out of his daze, the man releases me and bows.
âMy apologies, Queen Valkyrie,â he says.
âPlease donât call me that!â I blurt out, panic rising.
He lifts his head and frowns, a small crease forming on his forehead.
âYouâre the queen, arenât you?â he asks as he straightens up. His gaze roams over me, taking me in from head to toe.
âUh, yes?â I reply, feeling awkward.
âAllow me to introduce myself. Iâm Casen,â the manâCasenâsays, bowing again.
âPleased to meet you. Valkyrieâs the name,â I say, a bit timid. Thereâs something about this man thatâs intimidating, yet oddly familiar. âSorry about earlier.â
âNo need for apologies,â Casen replies, his smile warm and inviting. âWhere are you off to? Mind if I tag along?â
âUh, no, thatâs okay, thanks,â I respond, ready to make a quick exit. Why would he want to accompany me? I give him an awkward smile and make my escape.
As I push open the library doors, I spot Michael. Heâs sitting in my usual spot. I halt in my tracks and duck behind a bookshelf, observing him. He seems oblivious to my presence, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Heâs engrossed in a massive book, similar to the one Prince Cian used to show us the totem. Heâs so absorbed in it, heâs completely unaware of his surroundings.
I canât help but smile as I lean against the bookshelf, watching him. Michael is such an enigma.
âCould you quit being a creep and stop staring at me like that?â Michael suddenly snaps, startling me.
âUm,â I stammer, scratching my head and laughing nervously. âSorry, didnât mean to disturb you.â
âNo, itâs fine,â Michael replies, standing up. âWant to join me?â
âIâm good. Iâve got something else to do,â I say, shaking my head and heading towards a bookshelf.
âYou sure?â Michael asks again. âI wouldnât mind the company.â
With a sigh, I grab a book and settle down on the cushions. Michael just watches me, a smile playing on his lips. He takes a seat next to me, his gaze never leaving me.
âSo, are you finally ready to step into the role of queen?â Michael asks, curiosity evident in his voice.
âQueen?â I echo, looking up at him. âThatâs what Iâm supposed to do, right?â
âYes, but if you do, it means you accept Dimitri,â Michael smirks. I respond with a nervous smile.
âNot just that, youâll also need to be accepted by the council. And those old dragons arenât exactly your biggest fans.
âEspecially Damian and Dimitriâs grandfather,â Michael continues. âTheyâre not too fond of humans.â
âBut Iâm not human, am I?â Iâm confused. Didnât they say I wasnât?
âYes... But they donât know that,â Michael says, closing his book. âWhat you need to understand is that the elders want a pure dragon for Dimitri, not someone they perceive as human.
âBut youâre not. All you need to do now is prove it to them.â
âAnd how am I supposed to do that?â I ask, tilting my head.
âThatâs something Dimitri will tell you. Iâm sure heâll introduce you to everyone soon,â Michael murmurs.
âAnd for that, I suggest you sort out your issues with him and anything else thatâs bothering you. And if you can⦠let Cian help you.â
With a sigh, I lie back and groan, covering my face with the book. I rack my brain for a solution. How did I end up in such a mess?
