Chapter 325
Spoiled by the President
The tea room fell into a brief silence.
Nell was not close to the old master. They had not established a relationship in the short few hours of interaction.
Nevertheless, she was still saddened by the bad news.
âSecond Uncle Garrett, my condolences.â
Joseph smiled.
âItâs okay. Everyone goes through life and death. The old master has been sickly and hasn't been able to live the best of his life. I shouldnât say this as his son but itâs okay to pass on at this age.
âBecause of her child, Juli hadnât been in the right state of mind and still couldnât let it go even after adopting Stephanie. We lost her to depression when she was only in her thirties.
âThis has always been on the old masterâs mind. Heâs been busy with family affairs over the years and never really searched for the child because he wasnât sure if the child was dead or alive. Now that he was nearing his end, he didnât want to leave with regret and sought ways to find her.
âThe truth is, itâs not important whether the child is genuine or a fake. As long as the old master thinks she is, then sheâs the child. Otherwise, all will be in vain.â
With that, the trio fell silent once again.
For a moment, Nell was at a loss of words.
She finally understood what Gideon meant when he said it was not necessarily a good thing with the child back.
Apart from the old master, no one in the family wished she was back!
After all, with the old master soon to breathe his last, it was unknown whether a will had been made. An additional child meant extra competition, even if the child was a helpless woman without connections and backing.
The rich and the powerful were at times disappointingly unsympathetic in certain areas.
Nell held her tongue for a short while. Having gotten an answer, Gideon had no further questions.
They got up and said their goodbyes to Joseph.
Joseph picked himself up to send them off. Once they were at the door, Joseph stared at Nell, unable to put together a sentence.
Reading his thoughts, Nell faintly responded, âDonât worry, I wonât say anything and pretend I donât know her as long as she stays away from me. For me, the past is in the past. Those who deserved it have been executed and Iâve already retrieved whatâs mine. At the end of the day, she has exhausted every means possible and nothing good came out of it. I know better than to latch onto the matter and go after her. Itâs a waste of my time and effort.â
Josephâs mind was put to rest.
âIf thatâs the case, let me extend you my gratitude.â
Nodding, Nell turned and departed together with Gideon.
Back in Fengqiao Villa, it was still early.
The pair had not eaten much at the Garrettsâ place. Now that they had returned, Aunt Joyce specially made Nellâs favorite glutinous rice balls and served them the dessert.
Nell and Gideon sat on the dining table. Nell ate the rice balls while her mind wandered elsewhere.
Taking a glance at her, Gideon asked, âIf you donât feel comfortable about it, I can take you there and expose her. Donât lose sleep over it.â
Nell paused for a moment before snapping out of it. She explained, âOh, no. I wasnât thinking about her.â
Gideon raised a brow.
âWhatâs on your mind?â
Nell hesitated before replying, âI was thinking, I had always heard that Old Master Garrett was good to Stephanie but it doesnât seem to be the case today. Do you think that because Celineâs back, Stephanie, as the foster daughter, isnât as welcomed anymore?â
Gideonâs complexion darkened.
âYou spent half a day dwelling on this?â
Nell solemnly nodded.
âHa! Whatâs it got to do with you whether sheâs welcomed or not? Why worry for her?â
Nell curled her lips in displeasure at his sudden burst of temper.
âShe liked you for many years and was your ex. She might have been your first love. For you not to care when sheâs in this vulnerable state is just heartless and ruthless of you. What do you have on me?â
Gideon froze.
Nell was not the kind to rake up the past but she often poked fun at him about Stephanie every now and then.
Putting down the spoon, he gazed at Nell and earnestly replied, âLet me reaffirm my stand. Iâve never acknowledged that she was my girlfriend. Itâs just a joke between the parents when we were young and a misunderstanding by the outside world. Moreover, if sheâs really my ex, it mustâve been many years since we split up. Thereâs nothing between us. Therefore, she doesnât need my concern. You, as my wife, shouldnât be concerned about her either. Do you understand?â
With raised brows, Nell let out a bantering chuckle.
âWhy are you a bundle of nerves? I was only joking. Look at you, all serious going into details?â
Gideon, â...â
The black look on his face saw Nell to clear the air with a smile.
âOh, donât be so sensitive. Who doesnât have exes these days? I had been in a relationship before I met you. Itâs alright, I donât mind.â
The remark only made the manâs complexion several shades darker.
Just then, Aunt Joyce joyfully came in. âSir, Missus, Miss Hancock is here.â
Dumbstruck, Nell was taken aback.
She glanced at the time and realized it was 10:00 p.m.
Ever since Janet had returned to the capital after giving birth, she lived in seclusion, rarely out this late apart from a get-together.
Why was she here at a time like this?
Bewildered, Nell got up and walked out.
She stepped into the living room and saw Janet holding her child. Behind her was the maternity matron, Karen, with a piece of huge luggage in hand.

Janet smiled. âNothing. I hope Iâm not a bother coming this late.â
Gideon advanced from behind Nell. With a blank face, he took a glance at her and told Nell, âYou guys should talk. Iâm going to the study.â
Nell was aware that he was leaving some space alone for them to bond. Hence, she nodded and complied.
After Gideon went upstairs, Nell sat Janet down on a sofa. She glanced at the child sleeping soundly in her arms and asked, âWhy did you bring him out this late and cold in the night?â
The capital in December was covered in a thick layer of snow. It was not the sort of weather a young child could bear.
Janet sighed and helplessly replied, âI have no other alternative. He has to come over soon or later. It was better I made the trip myself for a peace of mind instead of Karen sending him here tomorrow morning.â
Nell was in a daze.
Janet looked at her and retorted in a serious tone, âNelly, can you do me a favor?â
Nell nodded without a second thought. âDo say. Itâs not an issue as long as itâs within my power.â
âHelp me take care of Sunny. I need to go back to Jincheng for a while.â
