Chapter 291

Spoiled by the President

Yet, no matter how unreliable Jean was, she would not put herself in such a sticky situation.

This jewelry set was given to her by the old madam to serve as dowry. However, since Jean had not set her heart on tying the knot, the old madam just gave it to her.

Thus, that was the meaning behind this jewelry.

Owen looked at him and moved his lips, wanting to say something.

In the end, he held his tongue.

After all, Jean was an aunt of Gideon. Because Gideon’s parents passed an untimely death, Jean had been hands-on with him since he was a child.

Even if Jean may have met with some trouble, it was improper to be blunt.

Nell understood Owen from his perspective.

The only difference was, she was reminded by Jean’s sudden visit to Fengqiao Villa a few days ago where she mentioned some of the antiques.

“Gideon, do you remember that four days ago, Aunt came to the villa and threw a tantrum, where she said that I shouldn’t have taken away her antiques?”

Gideon nodded. “I do, what’s wrong?”

“I have a weird feeling about it. Aunt never used to care about those kinds of things. Why did she come over to ask about the antiques? Can it be that she wants the antiques back but can’t bring herself to ask me so she made a huge deal out of it to provoke me to return them to her? However, you came back and...”

Gideon frowned.

Owen was unaware of that day’s incident but he was a smart man. He put two and two together from Nell’s description.

Then, he darted a stare at Gideon.

Gideon remained quiet before rasping, “I’ll have Matthew investigate this matter and we’ll probably have the outcome in a couple of days. Regardless, the jewelry shouldn’t have ended up in this place. I’ll ask Aunt after the investigation is done.”

Nell gave a nod.

Owen reached out to pat him on the shoulder.

“Don’t be too precarious of it. The Leiths may be presented in a rather susceptible situation in which people could easily find fault to make a fuss on, but it’s not in a state of panic yet. Make sure to conduct a thorough investigation first.”

Gideon nodded.

The group departed with a heavy heart.

Gideon first sent Owen back to his research institute before driving back home together with Nell.

To his surprise, he received a call from Matthew the moment he was home.

“President, I’ve managed to find out what you told me to investigate.”

With a sullen look on his face, Gideon froze for a moment.

“Speak.”

With that, Matthew informed him of the investigation outcome.

As Gideon’s complexion darkened by the minute, Nell worriedly walked over and held his hand.

A while later, he said in a gruff voice, “I got it. Send someone to keep an eye and don’t make any rash move. Wait for my instruction.”

On the other end of the line, Matthew complied before Gideon hung up.

Seeing that the call ended, Nell quickly asked, “What’s the verdict? What happened?”

Gideon scoffed coldly.

Instead of being forthright, he fixed his gaze on Nell.

“Come with me to a place tomorrow. You’ll know when you’re there.”

Nell did not know what to say.

...

The next day, Nell applied for a day off with the filming crew and set out together with Gideon first thing in the morning.

The pair sat in the car with Matthew behind the wheel and Nancy, too, joined the ride as they headed to a nearby stone-betting site.

Nell already had a hunch when Gideon spelled out the address before they departed.

Still, she was taken aback.

One should know that the Leith family had a strict upbringing. It was not just their skills that got them to where they were today, self-discipline played a part as well.

The descendants of the Leiths were prohibited from pornography, gambling, drug abuse, etc, in which gambling, in particular, was explicitly forbidden.

Stone-betting might not fall into the gambling category but it more or less involved the nature of luck.

Moreover, if the jewelry was indeed sold by Jean, it meant that she was at the limit of her resources.

To indulge in stone-betting to the point of exhaustion basically put it in the same essence as gambling.

The group drove for more than half an hour before they arrived at the stone-betting event.

The event was on a larger scale today. After they had parked the car and approached the entrance, they realized there was already a large crowd.

There was a mass of people inside, rubbing shoulders. Every one of them carried either a serious, curious, or excited look on their faces.

With that, the group carefully made their way in.

Right inside was a huge hall that was exhibiting a variety of freshly-extracted stones for the event. If luck was on one’s side, a person could bet on a single stone and hit the jackpot overnight.

Those with bad luck would possibly face bankruptcy and lose everything in an instant.

Hence, stone-betting was, in fact, more thrill-seeking than card games.

“Are you here to bet on stones? I’ve never seen you before. Is this your first time?”

They were immediately hit on the moment they entered.

Nell wore a low flat cap today in fear that she might be recognized.

She took a glance at the person. The man was bald and had a beer belly. His face lit up in enthusiasm and ardor like a hungry wolf preying on a piece of meat which made Nell a little uncomfortable.

Matthew came in between them and said to the man, “We are just taking a look around.”

Rubbing his hands together, the person smiled. “Alright, take a look around. You’re welcome to enquire over there if there’s anything you need to know.”

He then pointed at the information counter at close quarters.

Nell lifted her eyes to look and smiled.

It had never occurred to her that the service would be great.

She nodded and muttered, “Thank you for telling us.”

So, the person left and let them be.

Nell and the others took a stroll around the site, feasting their eyes on stones of various sizes with numbers marked on them.

Many people crowded and commented on every piece of stone. It seemed like they were in discussion of the stones’ quality.

Stones that tickled their fancy could be bought on the spot.

After the stone was bought, it could be either cut here or taken away to be cut by someone else.

Nell whispered, “Would we be able to find Aunt if we search like this?”

Gideon’s tone was hoarse.

“The stone-betting event today is massive. It’s said that a batch of raw stones was just extracted a while ago. If she is, just as we presume, hooked on stone-betting, she’ll be here today.”

Nell nodded.

Jean may seem absent-minded, but the truth of the matter was, as a member of the Leith family, she was not one to mess with.

Even if Nell and Gideon noticed something fishy going on with her, Jean would not admit any fault unless she was not caught red-handed.

They strolled around but did not find Jean. While on the way, they ran into several people who pulled them in to look at raw stone together.

There were staff as well as other passionate customers.

Noticing that Nell’s group was dressed to the nines and of remarkable presence, the people could tell they were not ordinary people and so, they pulled them over for a small talk.
