Chapter 145
Spoiled by the President
âAhhhhh! Donât come over, donât come!â
The lighting in the room shone at a click.
Celine flinched into Sylviaâs arms. The latter gently patted Celineâs back and sighed.
âOh, child. I thought there really was something. Take a closer look, itâs just the curtain. You slept without closing the window so the breeze blew the gauze from outside. The hand you were talking about is just the drapes.â
The old lady motioned her to take a look.
Celine focused her vision on the spot and soon realized that the phantom figure she mistaken for was only a drape.
She heaved a heavy sigh.
âDid my eyes deceive me?â
âIt must be the mounting pressure on you recently.â
As a matter of fact, Sylvia was pretty speechless by Celine who was scared by the curtain and woke everybody up in the middle of the night.
Nevertheless, it was best she held her tongue by the looks of Celineâs pale face.
Hence, she patted her hand. âItâs alright now. Donât get a bee in your bonnet. Thereâs nothing. Get some rest.â
She then brought the crowd to leave.
Standing there, Celine opened her mouth, wanting to say something but the words would not escape her lips.
Sally met her gaze and threw her a reassuring look before departing as well.
In the corridors, Sylvia stopped in her tracks and asked Sally, âAre there any updates regarding Celine and the people in the capital?â
Sally replied with respect, âThey have checked on it but haven't given a concrete answer. Itâs been established that the thing is genuine though so we should receive a reply soon enough.â
Sylvia frowned, a giveaway of her displeasure.
Sally added. âItâs been missing for over two decades after all. Itâs no surprise they would take precautions. A prominent and influential family such as them wouldnât abandon Celine if they can confirm that sheâs part of their bloodline.â
Sylvia heavily snorted.
âThis concerns all of the Jennings. Nothing must go wrong. Celineâs future, and the Jennings' future highly depends on it. We must be careful moving forward.â
Sally immediately replied, âI know, mom.â
Without another word, Sylvia brought her people and left the scene.
Staring at the old madamâs receding figure, Sally let out a sigh.
Shaun came up from behind and coldly scoffed.
âIt is I who had a hard time befriending that Morrison woman and built the Jennings to what it is today. Yet, she handed all of the family inheritance to that b*stard. What does she take me for? Godd*mnit!â
Sally softly pursed her lips.
âWhatâs the Jennings?â With downcast eyes, she curled a scheming smile by the edge of her lips.
âIf we succeed, our little Celine will become Cinderella. The Hancocks and Mortons, let alone the Jennings will be on their knees fawning over us.
Shaun, donât just look at what's in front of you and be bothered about the petty gains. No good will come out of that.â
Shaunâs eyes lit up.
âYouâre right. We must succeed in this! We canât let anything go wrong!â
The duo returned to their bedroom full of pride. It was at that moment that Sallyâs footsteps came to a halt.
âWhatâs this?â
On the head of the bed, sat an exquisitely-wrapped white gift box. The box was tied with a pink ribbon. It was obvious someone had placed it there.
âOh, Shaun, did you put it there?â
Thinking it was a surprise gift from Shaun, Sally asked with glee.
However, Shaun furrowed his brows.
âIt wasnât me.â
He casted doubtful eyes towards Sally.
Sallyâs face quickly saw a change of emotion.
âWhat are you trying to say? Itâs just you and I in this room, so itâs either you or me. It canât be a ghost, you know?â
The duo could not shake the feeling of eeriness creeping from all corners of the room.
Their complexions faded amid the hair-raising moment. In the end, it was Shaun who cleared his throat.
âAlright already. Wouldnât you know who it is once you open the present? No need to get overly suspicious there.â
Sally concurred. Thus, she advanced forth and opened the box.
It was not some expensive gift inside the box. Inside quietly lay an old metal scrap with its paint peeled off. There was also a note attached to it.
Frowning, Sally picked up the note.
The next minute, color washed off her face.
âAhhhh!â
After a brief cry in fear, she took a step back and hurled the note onto the bed.
âWhat is it? Whatâs written on it?â
Out of curiosity, Shaun picked it up for a look. The words on the note contorted his facial features.
The azure sticky note was beautifully handwritten with a few words.
âIâm back!â
âItâs her. Sheâs back! Her vengeful soul has come to seek vengeance!â
Sally was frightened to a state of panic while Shaun adopted a rather surly outlook as he crumpled the paper in his fist. His gaze then fell onto the aluminum piece in the box.
It was a piece of aluminum with its paint scraped off due to vigorous friction. Even an amateur could tell that it came from a car.
âI refuse to believe that! What vengeful soul is coming for our lives! This kind of haunting sh*t! Iâm not afraid of the living, why would I be afraid of the dead?â
Sally gradually regained composure at Shaunâs speech.
âBut... But how can you explain these things?â
âHumph! Someone must have put it there on purpose. Itâs to scare us!â
He picked up the item in the box and walked out.
Just then, another round of shrieks came from the corner of the corridor.
It was from Celineâs room.
White as a sheet, the duo raced towards the room.
Before they reached the door, Celine fled out in panic. This time, she was trembling from head to toe and her face was drenched in tears.
The sight of Sally and Shaun prompted her to pounce at them as though she was grasping at straws.
âMom!â
Sally hugged her as Celine cried in her embrace. âMom, I heard that womanâs voice again. Itâs so terrifying. Itâs real this time. Iâm not hallucinating.
Sheâs really back!â
Sally probably would not have believed her if it happened earlier.
However, having been through a bizarre occurrence herself, Celineâs words did carry some weight.
âDonât be afraid, Iâll go in with you.â
âBut...â
Fear still lingered within Celine when Shaun sternly reproached, âWhatâs there to be afraid of? If there really is a ghost, of all people, would it eat you?
Follow me in!â

All was normal inside the room.
Whether it was the lighting, or the furnishings in the room, it was exactly the same as they left it in.
Apart from the bed being left in a bigger mess by the hurried escape, nothing was out of the ordinary.
Sullen, Shaun took strides to the bay window and thoroughly inspected the curtain.
