Chapter 27
Fall For My Ex's Mafia Father
âWhatâs wrong?â he asks, sitting on the edge next to her. âAre you alright?â
âIâm fine,â she murmurs, looking around. The room is tastefully decorated in shades of brown and green that match Danielâs eyes, but thereâs very little personal decoration â not much that seems like Daniel himself has chosen it.
âWhat do you guys do all day, here?â She asks, suddenly wondering about Danielâs life as an only child in a mafia family.
He shrugs. âI mostly stay in here,â he says, nodding to his computer and the several bookcases full of texts against the far wall. âI keep busy.â
âDonât you get bored?â She wonders, sitting up.
âOf course,â he says, laughing a little. âDoesnât everyone?â
âDo you ever get to leave?â She asks, studying her handsome fiancé.
âOf course,â he replies, laughing. âDonât forget, you met me outside of this house, so, thatâs evidence of that.â He hesitates, realizing the direction of her questions. âBut we canât leave now. Not for a while. Not until things are more...settled.â
Fay sighs, disappointed, and falls back against his pillows.
âItâs not always going to be like this,â he murmurs, sorry that she feels so discontented. âOnce everything dies down, once weâre married, weâll have like...complete freedom. We can go back to the bookshops...maybe to Paris...â he gives her a shy smile, knowing sheâd love it there.
She gives him a little half-smile in response, but he knows sheâs not content with what heâs offering.
âCome on, Fay,â he says, scooting closer to her and taking her hand. âSome people would kill for what we have. We actually like each otherâs company and we have all the money in the world at our disposal. Soon youâll be one of the richest, most powerful women in this city, Fay,â he says temptingly.
Fay glares at him a little. âSure, I can have whatever I want, except, you know, the freedom to leave this house. A marriage to someone who loves me.â
Daniel tilts his head, truly wanting to make it better. âI love you, Fay. In my own way.â
She sighs, knowing he means well.
âI just donât care about all of this, Daniel,â she says. âI donât care about this wealth and power that everyone thinks is so important. Plus, youâre forgetting the fact that all of this wealth and power come with the heavy pricetag of violence.â

âDonât you want to choose your own lover?â She asks, leaning forward eagerly. âInstead of being assigned one?â
He hesitates, squeezing her hand. âI kind of did pick you, Fay. And you picked me. Even before I knew we were âassigned.ââ
She sighs, taking her hand gently from his. âYeah, but that was before I had all the information,â she murmurs. Back when she thought he was Prince Charming, not the heir to a mafia cartel.
âIâm going to be a good husband to you,â Daniel murmurs, really meaning it. He always knew heâd get married to a woman, and even if he knew it wouldnât be a sexual relationship â or even one in which he was faithful â he had always hoped it would be to someone like Fay. His best friend.
Fay flicks her eyes to him, full of doubt. âBut what kind of wife would you want me to be?â she asks softly. âWould I even be able to pursue my career, which means so much to me?â
Daniel hesitates. He knows, frankly, that the answer is no â his wife would be expected to stay home, manage his social affairs, raise their kids. But he also knows that saying that aloud right now isnât going to make this any easier.
Intuiting his response, Fay sighs again. âThis isnât what either of us really want, Daniel,â she says, speaking the truth for both of them. âBut somehow, youâve just...given in to it. I feel sorry for you.â
Her words are like a knife to his heart. Fay Thompson, this poor, delicate, timid girl, feels sorry for him?
God he must be so pathetic. He hangs his head.
âIâm sorry, Fay,â he says softly. âIâll do my best to make you happy.â
Fay moves until sheâs sitting next to him, putting her head on his shoulder. âAnd so will I. When I go, Daniel, Iâm not going to leave you behind.â
He looks at her, then, realizing that she still plans to escape. He doesnât burst her bubble.
But deep down, he knows itâs impossible.
