Chapter 1
Saving Abba
"Mr. Mohammad will see you now" the secretary announced before walking back to her station. I stood up and approached the familiar large brown door.
Without knocking I opened it and walked towards the man that stood between my company and I.
"Ah, Abubakar, welcome. How are you?" he asked, I ignored his question, my jaw clenched.
"Would you mind explaining why I got a call from my bank today notifying me that my account has been frozen?" I grated, glaring at him. He chuckled; he had the nerve to chuckle.
"Well, seeing as you don't work in this company I don't see why you should enjoy the benefits."
"This is my company; you have no right to do this." I shouted, slamming my palms on the table. His expression darkened, his lips pressed into a thin line.
"And you think you have the right to spend close to a million naira on a party? Your parents entrusted me with their estates and that includes this company until I certify that you are worthy of it and last night's actions confirms my thoughts. You are reckless and incapable of ever running this company. You are nothing but a disgrace to your parents' good name and as long as I live you will never get control of this organization until you get yourself together. Now get out of my office before I call security."
If looks could kill, I was sure he would have been 6 feet under.
"This is my company, I will sue you for it" I threatened.
He laughed
"Go ahead, let's see who will be on the losing side"
I hissed and walked out, slamming the door and earning a look from the secretary. I shot her a glare making her turn back to her laptop. The elevator dinged and I got in leaning against the steel wall. I curled my hands into fists, tempted to go back to the office and beating him up.
I exhaled trying to control the anger in me. The elevator opened at the ground floor and I made my way out of the building. The hot Abuja sun making me blinding me for a few second, I pulled out my sunglasses and slid them on as I walked over to my car.
I got in, staring at the wheel. I could feel the anger bubbling over; I growled hitting the leather covered steering wheel.
This was my company, my inheritance, he had absolutely no right to keep it away from me!!!
I started the car and peeled out of the parking lot. I could hear the shouts of people but I didn't give a shit. I weaved in and out of traffic; with no clear destination in mind.
I didn't want to go home and there was no way in hell I was going into work, the least they could do was give me a query. With that in mind, I decided to head to Apple Boulevard; I needed some shisha to clear my head.
********************
I arrived there in record time and parked before making my way into the building, I could see people admiring my car. A smirk crawled onto my lips, I didn't blame them, it was the latest Mercedes Benz S class and I was pretty sure there are only five of it in Abuja. I sat down and immediately a waiter approached me.
"Welcome back sir. Would you like your usual mix?" he asked.
I nodded bringing out my phone as he left. There were several missed calls from different girls that I couldn't be bothered to reply. Swiping most of them away, I paused noticing one from Najma, grinning, I immediately dialed her number.
"Hello Najma" I greeted smiling.
"Abba, how are you? You're so scarce these days"
"Sorry, I've just been busy." I explained.
"Busy doing what? Hoping from one club to another" she asked, her voice flat. I groaned, tilting my head up so I was staring at the ceiling.
Can't I get a break?
"Najma please..."
"I didn't call to berate you, I just wanted to check up and see whether you were alive since you've forgotten about us."
"Najm..."
"Anyway, I have to go, my work break is over. Good bye Abba and don't be a stranger." with that she hung up. I sighed, tossing the phone on the table.
The waiter came back with the shisha pot and pipe. I watched him mix it to my specifications before leaving. I inhaled deeply before breathing it out; the smoke evaporated into the air.
Only if all my problems could disappear like that.
I inhaled another lungful, my eyes drifting close as a calm settled over me.
"Hello" a voice said breaking the slight buzz I had going on. I opened an eye, staring at the person, she smiled coyly at me sitting closer.
Can't a person get some alone time anymore? What's all this?
"I noticed you were sitting here all alone..." she trailed off flashing me a grin.
I rested my head against the head rest, closing my eyes once more as I took another dose of the shisha.
"My name is..."
"I don't give a shit what your name is." I murmured, blowing the smoke into the air.
"Rude much?" she replied, I smirked, looking at her.
"Desperate much?" I replied. Her mouth dropped open like that of a dead fish before she scoffed, hissed and stood up to leave.
I took another lungful of the apple scented smoke, puffing it out. The slight buzz I had going wasn't soothing anymore. I hissed tossing the pipe onto the table. I needed more, anything to get my mind off that company stealing bastard.
I don't even blame him, it's my parents that left the company under his care that I blame.
Throwing a couple of Naira notes on the table, I grabbed my phone and left. I got into my car, pulling it onto the road, not bothering to look out for incoming cars, ignoring the angry honks.
Envious Plebs.
I decided to head to the club, it was still early but it was better than heading home. I got there in record time, before heading to the upper floor which was reserved for the more important people. I spied Jay seated at the bar and decided to join him.
"Hey man" I greeted before ordering a drink, he grunted a reply, staring intensely at his drink.
"You okay? You're looking at your glass like it holds all the answers" I joked slapping his back playfully.
"Just thinkin' y'know" he slurred.
Great, he's as drunk as hell.
Jay had always been a philosophical drunk and tonight was no exception. I was tempted to ditch him, coming to the club was starting to look like a huge mistake.
Today is definitely not my day.
"Y'know bro, I feel like we're just wasting our time, y'know. Like this entire world is shite man. Messed up in so many ways" he slurred knocking back the contents of the chaser down his throat. "We- we- we need to do better with our lives bro. Like fuckin shit up bro, you get wha- I'm sayin'?"
I scoffed at his words before grabbing my drink and getting up. Dealing with a drunk Jay was not on my to do list. Leaning against the railing, I surveyed the lower floor of the club.
My mind drifted to Baba Mohammad, the bastard had the nerve to freeze my account. I'll show him that I didn't need him. I was going to get my company from his greedy hands if that was the last thing I did.
"Penny for your thoughts?" A feminine voice asked, interrupted my thoughts. I turned around about to tell whoever it was to fuck off but stopped short.
"Stacey-" I trailed off
"Missed me?" She asked trailing her fingers down my chest, I smirked leaning closer to her.
"You know I did" I whispered into her ear, grinning when I felt her shiver.
"Wanna ditch this dump and head to mine" she asked, brushing her lips against mine.
"You read my mind"
I grinned, letting her lead me towards the stairs, my eyes set on her curvy figure.
"I should get my purse from my friend." She said wrapping her arms around my neck as we stopped by the hallway leading to the ground floor of the club.
"Sure" I replied kissing her, she giggled before running off. Sighing, I leaned against the wall waiting for her when a woman walked past me, the scent of vanilla making my mouth water.
Damn
I pushed off the wall and followed the mystery woman as she made her way to the regular part of the club. I wrinkled my nose at that but still made my way in.
Looking around, I immediately spotted her by the bar.
Time to turn the charm on.
I walked to the bar and slid in near her.
"Sparkling water with a slice of lime" I ordered, feeling her eyes on me but I ignored her, hiding the smirk that was threatening to take over my lips.
3... 2... 1
"That's an odd order" she said.
Bingo
"What can I say... sparkling water is my guilty pleasure" I shrugged, throwing her a panty dropping smile. Of course it had the same effect on her as it did with all the ladies. She blushed, hiding her face behind her hair.
"I'm Abubakar but my friends call me Abba." I said.
"I'm Safiya" she replied, shaking my outstretched hand.
"So Safiya, what brings you to this club?" I asked not really interested in what she was about to say but if I wanted to get her I had to at least pretend to be interested.
"... so because of that I decided coming to the club would be good for me." She answered.
Shit, oh well. Knowing what she said was not important.
Get this over with Abba.
"How about we go somewhere quiet? The club scene doesn't seem like you."
She bit her lip and my eyes moved to her lips.
Fuck...
"I'll like that" she said, smiling.
Score!!
"This way then" I stood, she followed suit. I placed my hand on the small of her back, guiding her to the exit. We walked across the parking lot towards my car.
"Nice car" she whispered, staring at the blacked out Mercedes.
"I know. She's a beauty" I smirked opening the door for her. She got in and I rounded the car and about to get in when I sighted Stacey by the entrance staring at me.
I sent her wink and got into the car.
That's what happens when she makes me wait.
*************
I gritted my teeth tempted to tear my ears off.
Nice going Abba, you picked up a chatterbox.
She kept on droning about useless things that I had no interest in knowing.
Maybe it wasn't too late. I could still dump her in the club and take Stacey home. A smile, a bouquet and some sweet words, she wouldn't stay mad for much long.
I could feel an incoming headache and the last thing I needed was one so I pulled up to the side of the road. She stopped yammering and turned to me.
"Is anything the matter?" She asked.
Yeah, your brain lacks the capacity to stop yapping like a chihuahua.
"No not really, uhm... I just... okay. Let's not make this awkward and I really can't come up with an excuse right now so how about this" I dug into my wallet and brought out a couple Naira notes.
"This should cover for a taxi. It was... nice meeting you"
Not
She stared at the money, her mouth flapping open like that of a fish. I rolled my eyes before reaching over and placing the money on her lap. She snapped out of the shock, her face going red with anger.
"You self absor..."
"Self absorbed prat... yeah I know. I'm kind of in a hurry right now. Could you please leave?"
She huffed, getting down from the car and slamming the door shut. I winced at the force she used before sighing and pulling back into the road.
Looks like it's your lucky night Stacey.
*************
Unfortunately for Stacey by the time I came back to the club she was gone. I ended up snogging one of her friends in the backseat of my car before driving back home.
Home was a cream six bedroom duplex in the heart of Asokoro, I had spent the majority of my childhood in the house. The house was quiet as usual, I got a bottle of water and flipped the TV on. Taking a swig of the water, settling down on the couch. My eyes drifted from the sport channel to the picture on the wall by the TV.
It was one of the last pictures I had taken with my parents before their death. I was 16 at the time, back from school. My eyes were glued to my phone while my parents were smiling at the camera. I stood and walked to the picture, staring at the two of them. I took the picture down, keeping it in a drawer.
I went back to the couch and concentrated on the soccer game.
