Lysander was well acquainted with the sting of solitude. Even though she had grown used to her own company. the feeling of isolation could still be overwhelmingly melancholic at times.
Josiah, who had been quietly absorbing everything she shared, only expressed his sentiments once he fully grasped the depth of Lysanderâs concerns. âLife often doesnât follow our plans, and saying goodbye is a part of that. But if youâre open to it. Iâm here to stay by your side until the very end.â he offered gently.
ÑÑÑ to
Lysander didnât outright reject his offer, but she didnât embrace it either. Touching the corner of her catch a tear, she responded softly, âYour intentions are touching but a bit far from reality. Youâre older than me, and since men generally have a shorter lifespan than women, the likelihood of you being by my side until the end is uncertain.â
Josiah, sensing a sliver of opportunity, remained resolute. âThen itâs up to me to take excellent care of myself. Iâll stick to a regular schedule, stay active, eat healthilyâall to ensure I can keep up with you.â
Lysander halfâjoked in response. âIt seems like a lot of trouble. Perhaps it would be simpler to find someone younger, so we could avoid the pain of parting by Teaving together.â
Josiah paused to consider her words, taking a moment before responding.
Lysander knew his intentions were genuine, especially considering how emotionally taxing recent events had been for her. He simply wanted to offer her support.
Aware that she was somewhat taunting him with the age difference, she started to say, âJosiah, I didnât
âThat wouldnât be impossible,â he cut in suddenly, his voice calm yet earnest.
Lysander was somewhat taken aback. âWhat did you say?â
âYou mentioned wanting someone younger? Perhaps thatâs not such a bad idea.â
âAnd you thinkâ¦â Lysander began, somewhat surprised.
âDonât worry,â he reassured her quickly, âI promised your father Iâd always protect you, and I intend to keep that promise. If you choose not to remarry, Iâll still be here. And if you find someone else, Iâll support you both.â
Lysanderâs expression turned serious. âAre you truly okay with that?â
âAbsolutely.â Josiah affirmed. âIf someone else can make you happy, Iâm willing to step aside.â
âLike what you did for Lysanne in the past?â Lysander probed, recalling how Josiah had once stepped back when Lysanne got married, resuming his methodical life of blind dates, marriage, and work.
âItâs different now,â Josiah admitted. âI probably wonât marry again.â
What t
your family if you choose not to marry?â Lysander queried.
âArenât you planning to have/children? Iâd help raise them,â he offered without hesitation.
Lysander frowned, puzzled. âWell, arenât you a selfless one, Mr. Guerra?â

Josiah shrugged. âWhatâs the alternative? Adopting a child from an orphanage? Itâs better to support someone trustworthy.â
Lysander, ever the scientist, mused aloud, âBiologically speaking, itâs hard to believe any male would willingly care for a child not his own, much less bequeath his fortune to them. In nature, stags fight until bloody, lions brawl until theyâre raw, and some insects even die to ensure their genes surviveâ¦â
Josiah clicked his tongue. âTalking of romance with you truly lacks warmth. Everything you say boils down
to science.â
A brief smile flickered across Lysanderâs face before vanishing just as quickly. âPerhaps someone with my disposition just isnât meant for love.â
âDonât say that,â Josiah interjected, his brow furrowed with concern. âThereâs no one who is unsuited for love. Youâre perfect as you areâanalytical, thorough, and stable. Youâre not swayed by fleeting passions or superficial attractions.â
Lysander teased, halfâserious, âAre you being sarcastic about Joseph and Adrian?â
âOh, itâs not sarcasm. I meant what I said,â Josiah replied. âBut regardless, they couldnât touch your heart
anyway.
Lysander acknowledged softly, âFor now, you canât too.â
Josiah added, âI know now that youâre not coldâhearted, just cautious. When your dad showed you kindness, you repaid him manifold. It was the same with Daphne, Lynn, Priscilla, and even when Nieva needed help, you were there without a second thought. Youâre not incapable of love; youâre just afraid of getting hurt. Thatâs why Iâm willing to keep giving, bit by bit, until you feel ready to open up.â
As the barbecue concluded and the Milky Way faded with the night, Maverick and Laura lingered on the grass, lost in memories of their youth. It had been ages since theyâd enjoyed such unhurried, carefree time together, their lives usually consumed by the demands of work and raising children.
From a distance, Susan watched, her own past memories stirred by the scene. She felt a pang of sadness, missing the person who used to stand by her side.
Lysander, observing from afar, turned to Josiah preemptively, âYou should go and keep Madam Susan
company.
âAll right, once Iâm finished here, Iâll head over,â Josiah agreed.
He quickly cleaned up the remains of the barbecue and joined Susan, engaging her in conversation to offer some solace.
At that moment, Lysander could not allow herself to succumb to idleness, fearing that further reflection might only sink her deeper into a state of gloom. She busied herself with arranging her sleeping arrangements for the evening
Josiah had meticulously organized their campsite. A total of five tents had been erected. The largest tent was reserved for Maverick and Laura, while the other four smaller tents were arranged for the remaining members of the party, with each individualâs personal effects already thoughtfully placed inside.
Lysander unzipped the flap of the tent assigned to her and immediately noticed the thoughtful arrangement inside. Thick clothing was neatly laid out atop a disposable sleeping bag, beneath which a dust cover had been placed to suit her preference for cleanliness.

As ten oâclock approached, the weariness from the dayâs early start and the activities at the spa resort. began to weigh on everyone. They collectively decided to call it a night and retreated to their tents for some muchâneeded rest.
Josiahâs tent was strategically positioned next to Susanâs. Despite the long and tiring day, he took the time to ensure that a few of the elders were comfortably settled before he considered retiring to his own tent for the night.
However, just as he began to unzip his tent, Michelle appeared, rushing over from the opposite direction in a state of urgency.
âMichelle?â Josiah queried, surprised by her sudden appearance,
Upon seeing him, Michelle latched onto him as though he was her lifeline, pleading. âJosiah! Please check on my sister. I think⦠I think sheâs crying!â
Josiah genuinely saw her as a sister, and in that moment, he sought to comfort her, âCalm down, tell me exactly what happened?â
Michelleâs voice trembled with concern as she recounted the unsettling sounds she had heard, âAs I passed by Lysanderâs tent, Iâm certain I heard her crying. It was faint, but unmistakable. She seldom displays such emotion openly. Youâve spoken with her privately before; do you have any idea what might be troubling her?
Lysander had always managed to mask her deeper emotions from Michelle, maintaining a facade of cheerfulness when necessary. Michelle had long sensed something amiss but had struggled with how to approach the subject.
Now, with someone she believed could shed light on her sisterâs distress right in front of her, Michelleâs expression became one of earnest inquiry, âDid you upset my sister somehow?â
Josiah, feeling somewhat cornered by the accusation, responded with a resigned tone, âI wouldnât dare upset her at this point.â
