Wiping the tears from his face with his rough, large hand, Maverick gritted his teeth, trembling as he grasped Josiah’s hand. “I know this may not be appropriate, but… I have no other choice. If Mich is ever treated unfairly by her in–laws, can you please stand up for her? Lysa still has me, and I will risk my life to protect her and seek justice for her. But Mich, she won’t have her father to stand up for her anymore.”

By the end, Maverick’s voice was so choked with emotion that he could hardly finish a sentence.

Josiah remembered the wound on his forehead and gave a slight nod. “I understand. If anyone dares to bully Michelle in the future, I’ll make sure they get a taste of the same pain right on their forehead.”

Maverick smiled slightly as he chided, “You brat.”

“Are you at ease now?”

Maverick sighed heavily. “I know you meant well, trying to cheer me up. I think I’ve got a decent read you now. When you decide to be kind to someone, you go above and beyond.”

Josiah knew he was referring to his past affair with Lysanne.

He didn’t deny it either.

He simply said, “From now on, I will only be good to Lysander.”

After a moment of thought, he added, “And also Mdm. Laura and Michelle.”

At the thought of his two daughters, Maverick’s previously resolute expression instantly softened, revealing an inner tenderness.

Relieved, Maverick raised his hand and patted the younger man’s shoulder in a paternal manner. “All right, I’ll trust you this time. But if you dare to mistreat Lysa in the future, I won’t let you off the hook even as a ghost,” Maverick half–jokingly said.

His entire demeanor became significantly more relaxed as if he had let go of all his worries.

Josiah, setting aside his sorrow and helplessness, smiled and responded, “If I ever break my promise and do anything to let down or hurt Lysander, don’t hesitate to come and take me away.”

With Josiah’s assurance, Maverick didn’t think he had to claborate further. He simply raised his hand to pat his chest, soothing the sporadic pain he was experiencing.

Josiah looked at him with concern and asked, “Mr. Maverick, how are you feeling now? If you’re okay with it, I can arrange for a doctor to see you.”

Maverick continued to shake his head, his attitude unwavering as he steadfastly refused.

“Thanks for your concern, but there’s no need for another doctor. I doubt the Central Hospital could have misdiagnosed me. If I were to consult other doctors, they’d certainly advise me to be hospitalized and I don’t want to spend my last days in a hospital. That’s enough. You must be tired today. I’ve said what I needed to. You should go home. I should hurry back too. I’ve been out too long and Laura will be worried.”

After he finished speaking, he slowly made his way out of the stairwell.

The double room was located on the first floor. After turning a corner and opening the door of the fire exit, one would find themselves back in the hallway.

Josiah stood still as he watched Maverick walk away. He remained alone for a considerable time before he finally decided to head back upstairs.

However, as soon as he turned around, he frowned deeply.

Lysander stood at the junction of the two–story staircase, watching him. Her eyes were red, tears brimming at the corners. Josiah had no idea how long she had been standing there.

He hastily rushed to her side. With a hint of panic in his voice, he asked, “Why are you here? Didn’t we agree that you’ll for me in the room?”

Upon recalling the words he had exchanged with Maverick, Josiah felt nervous.

With tears in her eyes, Lysander forced out a bitter smile and said, “I… I just wanted to hear what my father had to say.”

It turned out that she had actually followed Josiah, which was why she could find her way to the corner of the stairwell.

Josiah’s heart sank a little further when he observed Lysander’s expression. He asked again, “How much did you hear?”

Lysander fought back the urge to cry as she replied, “I heard everything. Thank you for advising him to smoke less, and for wanting to help find a doctor. But let’s respect his wishes. I hope he can spend his final days as he pleases, even if there’s truly only three months left.”

Josiah looked at Lysander gently as he tried to offer some consolation. “Lysander, I know words may not mean much at this moment, but I still want to urge you to take care of yourself. Your father told me he has no other wishes left other than his lingering concern for his family. You are the child that he is most proud of and trusts the most. He didn’t want you to worry, so you must stay strong and not give him cause for concern, okay?”

Leaning against the railings of the staircase, Lysander looked toward the direction of the steps where Maverick had previously sat. “I’ve already heard it straight from him. Don’t be fooled by my father’s

retic when it comes to praising my sister and me. He’s just not good with words, but he saves all the

nice things to say in private.”

With that said, she smiled through her tears as she reminisced about the time she spent with Maverick when she grew up. “We were not well off when we were young, and going out to eat was a rare treat. He would always claim he wasn’t hungry, but I knew he was only trying to make sure my sister and I had enough to eat. I felt sorry for him, so I would pretend I couldn’t finish my food and offer him half of my portion. But he would never accept it. In the end, it was Michelle who ended up eating one and a half portions.”

The Thorne family came from a modest background, relying on Maverick’s salary to support two children. During tough times, life was incredibly tough.

However, when Lysander spoke of that time, she didn’t seem to feel the burden at all. Her eyes sparkled as she reminisced.
