Upon hearing that it was related to Lysanderâs father, Lynn didnât even bother to hang up the phone. She quickly searched for Maverickâs medical records on her computer, then fell into a long silence.
Lysander tigily gripped her phone, a bad feeling creeping into her chest. âLynn?â
âDr. Thome,â Lynnâs voice was somewhat strained, â1-
Lysander croaked. âHave you found my fatherâs medical records?â
âYes,â Lynn responded slowly, only daring to utter one sentence. âIâve found it.â
Lysander took a deep breath and said. âTell me. I need to know what happened to him.â
Knowing her as well as she did, Lynn found it hard to speak up. She said sorrowfully, âDr. Thorne, Mr. Thome was diagnosed with lateâstage lung cancer a few days ago. He already has his medication, but the medication is to case-â
A buzz filled Lysanderâs mind, making it almost impossible for her to make out Lynnâs following words. Nevertheless, she forced herself to respond, âAll right, I understand.â
After she said those words, Lysander hung up the phone with an almost mechanical motion. But her fingers slipped, causing her phone to fall to the ground. As she tried to bend down to pick it up, her vision blurred, and she almost fell over herself.
âLysander!â
Josiah could no longer care about the quietness of the deep night. He called out Lysanderâs name and leaped over the railing to her side.
Josiah was completely oblivious to how dangerous his actions were. He noticed Lysander maintaining a crouched position on the ground, picking up her phone, Following suit, he crouched down, handing her the phone as he asked, âWhatâs wrong? What did Lynn say?â
In a dazed state, Lysanderâs words seemed to float in the air. âLâLung cancer.â
As soon as she uttered those words, the already quiet night became as still as death itself.
Caught off guard, Josiah was left speechless, his throat tight with shock. He remained in this stunned silence for quite some time, unable to utter a single word.
âIs there any way to-â
Lysander herself was a doctor, and asking her such a question was excessively harsh. As soon as Josiah spoke, he immediately regretted it!
Lysanderâs face turned pale, her whole body trembling as she replied, âIf there are targeted cancer drugs, then itâs fine, but if there isnât.â She trailed off.
âDid Lynn mention anything specific? Are there targeted cancer drugs?â
âThere shouldnât be any,â Lysander said with great. âThe medications Lynn mentioned are all standard cancer drugs. There werenât any targeted cancer drugs.â

A sense of dread settled in Josiahâs heart.
Lysander lowered her head, her eyes tightly shut. âI knew it. His weird behavior surely hinted that something was wrong, but how could it be like this?â

âLysander, why donât we head back first? Itâs too cold out here. Letâs go home and talk things over slowly,â coaxed Josiah.
âI donât want to go back. How can I even sit still? I- Lysander covered her face in agony, the coat draped over her shoulders slipping to the ground.
With a swift glance and even swifter hands, Josiah wrapped the coat around her and held her tightly.
He looked at Lysander with a concerned gaze and said, âI think the reason why your dad kept this a secret from you all is because he didnât want you and Mrs. Thorne to worry. Once we go back tomorrow, we can visit the hospital for a detailed inquiry. The situation may not be as bad as it seems.â
He attempted to help her up yet feared she might resist. The motion of his hand reaching for her arm was so gentle it was almost imperceptible, as he dared not exertâeven the slightest bit of additional force.
Lysander felt as if she were treading on cotton, finding his words to be nothing short of surreal.
It turned out that when people suffered a major blow, they couldnât summon tears.
Lysander was in utter turmoil. She allowed Josiah to help her up, her entire being in a state of bewildered confusion.
Josiahâs heart twinged in pain as he took in her state. He gently said, âI will definitely get in touch with the best oncology specialists for Mr. Thorne. If we canât find one here, we will look abroad.â
Upon hearing the words âtreatment,â Lysander finally snapped out of her daze. She slowly lifted her head to look at him, her gaze complex.
âItâs pointless now,â she said. âWhile Iâm not an oncology expert, my fatherâs already in the late stage. Event if we were to find a medical expert, the chances of recovery are extremely low.â
As Lysander spoke, her voice began to tremble uncontrollably toward the end. It felt as if acknowledging the truth was akin to sentencing her father to death, yet there seemed to be no other choice.
âI canât think of any other solutions,â she said, finally succumbing to her tears.
At times like these, it was always better to let the tears flow than to bottle up all the emotions inside.
Josiah sighed in relief. He moved to face her and said, âI know youâre upset, Lysander. Donât hold it in. You donât need to think about anything else when youâre around me. If you want to cry, then cry. If you want to say something, then say it. Itâs okay to let it out. If you fall, what will Mrs. Thorne and Michelle do? They still need you.â
Lysander was so distraught that she could barely stand. Josiah gently held her to prevent her from collapsing like she had just done.
As the night deepened, Lysanderâs body was cold as a block of ice, and she drew warmth only from his body.
Lysander no longer wished to ponder who the person standing before her was; all she needed at that

âI donât understand why the heavens are treating me this way. Had I done something wrong? Iâve never done anything harmful. Iâve always done my utmost to help each and every patient. Yet, the people I care about keep leaving me. First, itâs my child, then you, and now itâs-â
The thought of Maverick leaving in the near future was heartâwrenching for her. She was so overwhelmed that she couldnât even utter a word about the impending future.
Josiah didnât respond. Instead, he silently offered his shoulder to her, allowing her to have a good, cathartic
cry.
Yet, Lysander didnât cry again. She simply lowered her head, hiding her face in a place he couldnât see, and began to murmur.
âIt feels like Iâve been losing things for a long time. When I lost my child, I was so devastated I couldnât even cry. I thought that was the most painful thing I could ever experience. But now, I realize that was just the beginning.â
Lysanderâs mind filled with a tangled web of painful memories. One minute, she was back in the chillingly cold clinic where she had her abortion, and the next, she was recalling her dadâs forlorn expression and words as if he was entrusting her with his entire world.
Had she not been strong enough, she might have been emotionally defeated by now.
Josiah patiently waited until Lysander had poured out all the pain in her heart before gently lifting his hand to rest it on her back. In a warm voice, he said, âIâm not sure if you care about me, but Iâll always be there for you, and even if you tell me to leave, I wonât.â
Lysander did not respond. It was unclear whether she hadnât heard due to her daze or if she simply didnât want to acknowledge him.
Josiah didnât mind her silence, and he continued speaking alone. âThe only thing Iâm unsure of is whether I can be considered someone you care about.â
